Associations of maternal food addiction, dietary restraint, and pre-pregnancy BMI with infant eating behaviors and risk for overweight.

Maternal food addiction, dietary restraint, and pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) are associated with high-risk eating behaviors and weight characteristics in children and adolescents. However, little is known about how these maternal factors are associated with individual differences in eating behaviors and risk for overweight in infancy. In a sample of 204 infant-mother dyads, maternal food addiction, dietary restraint and pre-pregnancy BMI were assessed using maternal self-report measures. Infant eating behaviors (as measured by maternal report), objectively measured hedonic response to s

Effect of combined maternal and infant food-allergen avoidance on development of atopy in early infancy: a randomized study.

The effect of maternal and infant avoidance of allergenic foods on food allergy was examined in a prenatally randomized, controlled trial of infants of atopic parents. The diet of the prophylactic-treated group (N = 103) included (1) maternal avoidance of cow's milk, egg, and peanut during the third trimester of pregnancy and lactation and (2) infant use of casein hydrolysate (Nutramigen) for supplementation or weaning, and avoidance of solid foods for 6 months; cow's milk, corn, soy, citrus, and wheat, for 12 months; and egg, peanut, and fish, for 24 months. In the control group (N = 185), mo

Improving children's menus in community restaurants: best food for families, infants, and toddlers (Best Food FITS) intervention, South Central Texas, 2010-2014.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 32% of US children are overweight or obese. Restaurant and fast food meals contribute 18% of daily calories for children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years. Changing children's menus may improve their diets. This case study describes Best Food for Families, Infants, and Toddlers (Best Food FITS), a community-based intervention designed to address childhood obesity. The objective of this study was to improve San Marcos children's access to healthy diets through partnerships with local restaurants, removing sugar-sweetened beverages, decreasing the number of energy-dens

Distinction between Clostridium botulinum type A strains associated with food-borne botulism and those with infant botulism in Japan in intraintestinal toxin production in infant mice and some other properties.

Two strains of Clostridium botulinum type A associated with food-borne botulism and six strains associated with infant botulism in Japan were compared in intraintestinal toxin production in infant mice, in vitro toxin and hemagglutinin production, molecular sizes of the toxins, and some other properties. The infant botulism-associated strains, producing M toxin (Mr 300 kDa) but no hemagglutinin, showed significantly lower 50% infective doses in infant mouse intestines. The antigenicities of the toxin differed between the two groups, while the biochemical properties of the cultures did not. Bes

Ultra-Processed Food Intake Is Associated with High Consumption of Added Sugar and Sodium in U.S. Infants.

Background/Objectives: Ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption has been connected to adverse outcomes in children and adults, but research in infants is limited. This study assesses the relationship between UPF, dietary intake, and infant growth during complementary feeding. Methods: We analyzed infant UPF intake from 3-day diet records at ages 5, 9, and 12 months (n = 114). Two coders independently classified foods from diet records using the Nova classification system. Linear mixed-effects models were used to model dietary intake and growth outcomes. A Bonferroni-corrected p-value of 0.006 (9

[Diagnostic validity of fecal occult blood test in infants with food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis].

INTRODUCTION: Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is the most frequent presenta tion of non-IgE mediated food allergy (FA). The diagnosis is made by oral food challenge, however, non-invasive diagnostic tests are not available. In Chile, the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is fre quently used to confirm FPIAP, however, there are no studies that support this practice. OBJECTIVE: To establish the diagnostic validity of FOBT in the evaluation of infants with FPIAP. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Case-control study with prospective recruitment of infants with rectal bleeding and suspicion o

Prevalence and Characterization of Cronobacter sakazakii in Retail Milk-Based Infant and Baby Foods in Shaanxi, China.

Cronobacter sakazakii (formerly Enterobacter sakazakii) is an opportunistic pathogen that causes meningitis, sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis in neonates and infants through consumption of contaminated milk-based foods. In this study, the prevalence of C. sakazakii in 705 retail milk-based infant and baby food samples was investigated in 12 cities in Shaanxi, China, in 2010 and 2012. One hundred and nineteen samples (16.9%) were C. sakazakii positive. The isolates were further characterized for antimicrobial susceptibility to 14 antibiotics, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles, and

Relationship between silent gastroesophageal reflux and food sensitization in infants and young children with recurrent wheezing.

It is known that early childhood wheezing associated with sensitization to allergens, including food, has an increased risk of developing asthma later during school age. Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is well known to be associated with asthma. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an association between silent GER and food sensitization in infants and young children with recurrent wheezing. Eighty-five infants or young children with recurrent wheezing, and no gastrointestinal symptoms, underwent 24 hr esophageal pH monitoring, as well as total serum IgE and specific IgE t

[The toxicological estimation of the heavy metal content (Cd, Hg, Pb) in food for infants and small children].

There are differences between young and adult organisms regarding toxokinetic aspects and clinical manifestations of heavy metal intoxications. Chronically, toxic Cd intake causes a microcytotic hypochromic anemia in young rats at lower exposure levels and after shorter exposure periods than in adult animals. Cd absorption is increased by co-administration of milk and in conjunction with iron deficiency. After long exposure periods toxic Cd concentrations accumulate in the kidney cortex; this process starts very early in life. In 3-year-old children Cd concentrations in the kidney can reach up

[Preventing iron deficiency in breast-fed infants by suitable supplementary food. A prospective, controlled study].

Iron deficiency may develop in prolonged breast feeding. Introduction of beikost (supplementary nutrition) is recommended in Germany for infants after 4 months of age. In a prospective study 73 exclusively breastfed infants at the age of 16 weeks were assigned to one of two feeding groups: 35 infants received a meat vegetable dinner fortified with iron-2-sulfate (3 mg iron per 100 kcal) as their first supplementary food. At 20 weeks of age a milk based rice cereal (MBRC) without iron fortification was added as a second beikost meal. The other group comprised 38 infants who first received a MBR

Food and Drug Administration Expert Panel on Infant Formula "Operation Stork Speed" June 2025: Part 2, Regulatory and Safety Considerations.

Operation Stork Speed was launched to modernize infant formula oversight after 2022 shortages and other evidence of supply chain and safety issues. Current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) processes to regulate formulas are at times slow and complex, making it difficult for new formulas to enter the market. One key pathway to adding bioactive substances or other compounds to infant formula is via the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) route. GRAS and food additive pathways require safety data, but food additive petitions require more safety information and cannot be marketed until FDA appro

Mice gut microbiota programming by using the infant food profile. The effect on growth, gut microbiota and the immune system.

During the complementary feeding (CF) period, nutritional imbalances can have negative consequences not only on a child's health in the short term but also later in adulthood, as a phenomenon known as "nutritional programming" takes place. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible changes in body growth, gut microbiota (GM) and the immune system in mice fed with two different commercial sterilized baby foods in jars (BFJs) for CF. Mice fed with different BFJs (A and B groups) showed an accelerated growth from the fifth week of life when compared with the control (C) group. Group A sho

Poor infant inhibitory control predicts food fussiness in childhood - A possible protective role of n-3 PUFAs for vulnerable children.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) children are more impulsive towards a sweet reward and have altered feeding behavior in adulthood. We hypothesized that early life inhibitory control predicts feeding behaviors later on in childhood, and the consumption of n-3 PUFAs during infancy may protect IUGR children from developing problematic feeding behaviors. 156 children had information on the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (ECBQ) at 18 months, Food Frequency Questionnaire at 48 months and Children׳s Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) at 72 months. There was a significant negative cor

A Scoping Review of Microplastic Contamination in Infant Foods: Exposure Pathways and Implications for Nutrition and Health of Children.

Microplastics (MPs) in the environment pose a significant threat to human health, particularly for vulnerable populations like infants. Over the past decades microplastics have infiltrated food systems, air, water, and consumer products, leading to widespread human exposure. Infant foods, including formula and complementary foods, may be contaminated with MPs during processing or packaging or through environmental pollutants. This scoping review was aimed to explore the extent of MP contamination in infant foods, its potential nutritional and health impacts, and the associated risks to the hea

Aeroportia and pneumatosis intestinalis in infants with food protein-induced-allergic proctocolitis: A presentation of two cases.

Bloody stools are a particularly concerning symptom in neonates and infants. The differential diagnosis reaches from life-threatening to benign conditions. We would like to present two infants, who presented to the paediatric emergency department with bloody stools and showed pneumatosis on ultrasonography, which initially led to the suspicion of a potentially life-threatening condition. Both children had an unremarkable physical examination and both the laboratory chemical parameters, as well as the stool analyses were without abnormal findings. As in summary, there was no evidence of necroti
