UNLABELLED: In May of 2022, millions of U.S. parents encountered uncertainty in safely feeding their infants due to the infant formula shortage.
METHODS: An anonymous, electronic, cross-sectional, retrospective survey was used.
RESULTS: U.S. parents (n = 178) whose infants were ~10 weeks old during the shortage completed the survey. Of parents, 81% switched formulas during the shortage, 87% switched because they could not find the formula they typically used, 34% switched 3-5 times, 29% of parents visited ≥4 stores/24 h and 26% of parents traveled >20 miles/24 h to purchase formula. To examine whether interfacial milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) remodeling improves lipid digestion and metabolism, three infant formulas (IFs) were developed referencing human milk (HM): IF1 (no exogenous MFGM supplementation), IF2 (wet-mixed MFGM), IF3 (dry-blended MFGM). Interface analysis confirmed IF1 droplets were coated with whey and casein; MFGM assembled on IF2 to restructure interfacial proteins and phospholipids, while most MFGM stayed dispersed in IF3's aqueous phase. In vitro digestion showed IF2 had HM-similar particle size and zeta potential trends, and its free fatty acid relea

Microplastics are recognized as emerging pollutants with increasing importance to public health. Low concentrations have been shown to affect endocrine and metabolic processes during critical developmental stages, such as early childhood. Infant formula and its packaging are potential sources of exposure to high daily particle levels and multiple types of microplastics. In addition, bisphenols and others are associated with thyroid, oestrogenic, and metabolic disorders and have been identified in these products. A scoping review was conducted following the JBI and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Articl

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the chemical compounds used in food packaging, so it can migrate from the packaging into food. Also, environmental pollution of this compound is high due to its high use. Therefore, it may enter food chains through the environment. Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) is one of the common mycotoxins in milk. Its presence has been reported worldwide. Infant formula is an alternative to human milk. The main ingredient of this product is cow's milk.
AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the levels and risk assessment of BPA and aflatoxin M1 in infant formula.
METHODS: Sam

This Review Article summarizes outcomes from the ILSI Europe expert workshop on plant-based proteins in infant formula, held in November 2024. Experts from academia, clinical nutrition, and food science evaluated the current use and future potential of plant-based protein sources in infant formula, considering nutritional adequacy, allergenicity, sustainability, processing technologies, and regulatory constraints. While soy and hydrolyzed rice proteins are already approved and in use, emerging sources such as pea, lentil, and faba beans show promise but require further validation of their amin

As part of a process evaluation, we explored in semi-structured interviews the experiences of 19 mothers who had taken part in a trial to reduce infant formula-milk intake and promote healthy weight gain, and reflections of three facilitators who delivered the intervention and control group protocols. Mothers appreciated the nonjudgmental support provided during the trial, after experiencing stigma and receiving limited advice on how, how much, and how often formula-milk should be given. The information mothers had previously found, printed on formula-milk tins, or provided by family, friends,

OBJECTIVES: Studies addressing breastfeeding and obesity rarely document the method of breast milk feeding, type of supplementation, or feeding in hospital. We investigated these practices in the CHILD birth cohort.
METHODS: Feeding was reported by mothers and documented from hospital records. Weight and BMI z scores (BMIzs) were measured at 12 months. Analyses controlled for maternal BMI and other confounders.
RESULTS: Among 2553 mother-infant dyads, 97% initiated breastfeeding, and the median breastfeeding duration was 11.0 months. Most infants (74%) received solids before 6 months. Among

Enterobacter sakazakii is an emerging opportunistic pathogen that is associated with rare but life-threatening cases of meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sepsis in premature and full-term infants. In the present study, a procedure was developed for immobilization of E. sakazakii with zirconium hydroxide coupled with detection by a species-specific duplex PCR, based on 16s-23s rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and ompA gene. Specificity of duplex PCR was tested against two-type strains, six isolates of E. sakazakii and other eight non-E. sakazakii species. When pure culture of E.

BACKGROUND: Most premature infant formulas marketed in Japan have high vitamin D content. Potential for vitamin D intoxication was assessed in premature infants with prolonged feeding of such a premature formula vitamin D content, 2700 IU/L.
METHODS: Serum vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus, and urinary calcium, were measured in 12 very premature infants fed premature infant formula, regular formula (vitamin D content; 460 IU/L), and/or mother's milk.
RESULTS: Concentrations of 25(OH)D in sera associated with sole feeding of premature infant formula (n = 40) were significantly higher than ser

Flavor differences between infant formula (IF) and breast milk (BM) are considered a potential factor affecting infants' acceptance of IF. This experiment employs flavoromics combined with multivariate statistical analysis to systematically compare the flavor profiles of IF and BM. Electronic tongue analysis and amino acid correlation revealed that IF was characterised by pronounced saltiness and umami richness, whereas BM exhibited greater bitterness and astringency. Volatile compound profiling identified five key flavor constituents in IF, predominantly aldehydes such as hexanal and pentanal

Bisphenol compounds (BPs), particularly bisphenol A (BPA), are chemicals that are widely used in various industrial sections and come into contact with humans via different routes of exposure. Documented toxic effects of BPs include androgenicity, estrogenecity, cytotoxicity, neurotoxicity, etc. As a well-known member of bisphenols, BPA is an endocrine disruptor chemical (EDC) that has been the subject of safety regulations. Monitoring infants' exposure to BPs via consumption of breast milk and infant formula is essential as they are at critical stages of development and are potentially more v

To accurately quantify the phospholipids in infant formula by subclass, we developed an analytical method using phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P NMR). We performed heated extraction method using a mixture of ethanol and water to extract phospholipids from infant formula and replace the highly toxic chloroform traditionally used for extraction. In the 31P NMR measurement, we also avoided using chloroform by dispersing the extracts in surfactants with a strong affinity for phospholipids. Although polar lipids in milk are characterized by a high content of sphingomyelin,

Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) affects 2% to 3% of infants and is managed with hypoallergenic formulas. The 2022 recalls of infant formulas due to factors including contamination led to specialty formula shortages, highlighting CMPA management challenges. Understanding health care providers' (HCPs) decision-making in transitioning to alternative formulas during shortages is crucial. Limited attention has been given to how pediatric physicians make these choices. This study utilized US HCPs' de-identified survey data to assess driving factors when switching extensively hydrolyzed formulas du

Breastfeeding is widely supported in clinical and home practices, and it is known that different forms of infant feeding differ in hormone content. Thyroid hormones have essential physiological roles. In our study, we examined thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine, and albumin levels in breast milk produced for term (n = 16) or preterm (n = 15) infants throughout the first 6 months of lactation. Moreover, we analyzed these components in donor human milk and in three different infant formulas. Term and preterm breast milk samples were collected monthly. The two groups had similar levels

BACKGROUND: Chronic food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a cell-mediated gastrointestinal food hypersensitivity described almost exclusively in infants fed cow's milk or soy formula. A timely diagnosis is challenging due to a number of factors, including broad differential diagnoses, absence of specific biomarkers, and delayed symptom onset.
OBJECTIVE: This report aimed to highlight how the severity of presentation can further impede a timely diagnosis in chronic FPIES. Methods: A case of presumed chronic FPIES to soy with previously unreported complications of intracranial

Infant formula powder is prone to oxidation reaction during storage, which leads to the decrease of milk powder quality. The whole milk powder (WMP) was formulated, and the characteristics of infant formula powder were tracked during storage. The addition of metal ions, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and vitamins could reduce the peroxide value and increase the thiobarbituric acid value in the infant formula powder during the early stage of storage. When the samples were stored for 6 months, the free fat content of the base milk powder and the sample added with metal ions had high level (3.3%-3.

BACKGROUND: Cow's milk allergy is the most common cause of food allergy in young children. Ingestion of milk products in children with a milk protein allergy can lead to anaphylaxis and must be avoided. Some guidelines suggest the use of an extensively hydrolyzed formula (EHF) in these cases; however, rare allergic reactions can still occur. Here, we presented a 3-month-old boy who developed anaphylaxis to a cow's milk formula. Subsequently, he developed a rare systemic reaction to soy and to an EHF.
CASE: The patient had an unremarkable medical history and presented with signs and symptoms c

Human milk contains an abundant supply and diverse array of oligosaccharides that are known to impart significant health benefits to the nursing infant including establishment and maintenance of a healthy gut microflora, immune development and protection against gastrointestinal infections. When breastfeeding is not possible or insufficient, infant formulas are commonly used as an alternative. However, limited information is available about the presence of naturally occurring oligosaccharides in these infant formulas and their likely health benefits. The present study examined the presence of

BACKGROUND: Phytoestrogen exposure from soy formula feeding during infancy may disrupt reproductive system development, resulting in altered menstrual bleeding in adulthood.
METHODS: We investigated this relationship in a cohort of 1,696 young African American women using enrollment data from the Study of Environment, Lifestyle, & Fibroids (2010-2012). Questionnaire data on soy formula feeding were available for 1,553 participants, 89% based on mother's report. Menstrual bleeding outcomes including those indicative of heavy menstrual bleeding were ascertained by interview. We estimated relati
