Mortality and short-term morbidity in infants with exomphalos.

BACKGROUND: Infants with exomphalos major have a high mortality and morbidity. The aims of this study were to identify predictors of survival regardless of the size of the exomphalos, and to analyze morbidity in infants with exomphalos minor. METHODS: Patients were classified as having exomphalos major or minor based on whether the liver was in the exomphalos sac, and the size of the abdominal wall defect. The respiratory, gastrointestinal and surgical outcomes of 50 infants with exomphalos (including 27 with exomphalos major) were assessed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were

Mortality of American Indian and Alaska native infants.

Accurate determination of infant mortality rates among Indians in seriously hampered by variations in the identification of Indian persons and use of different subsets of the Indian population for various purposes. Lack of consistency in the reporting of racial origin on birth and death records is a source of substantial error. Because of these factors, more than the usual care must attend comparisons and inferences drawn from data in which these differences are present. At present, it would seem prudent to regard all data about American Indians as provisional. Even though Indian infant mortal

The status of infant mortality in Sweden and the United States.

A study was made of live birth rates, infant, neonatal, and postneonatal death rates, late fetal death ratios, and perinatal death ratios for Sweden and the United States for selected years, 1950-1973. Sweden has lower live birth rates, infant, neonatal, and postneonatal death rates, as well as lower perinatal death ratios. Data available on low-birth-weight live births for selected years, 1959-1970, for both countries indicated that rates in the United States were almost twice those in Sweden. Implications of these findings for the United States are discussed in light of the quantity, quality

Geospatial disparities in infant mortality in Ghana: evidence from national data.

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality remains a major public health concern in Ghana, with progress occurring unevenly across population groups and locations. Understanding both the determinants and the spatial distribution of infant deaths is essential for designing targeted interventions and reducing persistent inequalities. METHODS: We analysed nationally representative data from multiple rounds of the Ghana Demographic and Health Surveys, comprising 19 558 infant survivors and 3464 infant deaths. Local Indicators of Spatial Association and kernel density estimation were applied to produce cluster

RAR and infant mortality: a crucial link in cardiac surgery outcomes.

BACKGROUND: In-hospital mortality remains a significant concern in infant cardiac surgery, yet precise risk stratification tools are lacking. The prognostic value of the red cell distribution width-to-albumin ratio (RAR)-a composite marker of inflammation and nutritional status-remains unestablished in this population. This study aimed to examine the association between RAR and in-hospital mortality in infants undergoing cardiac surgery. METHODS: This work constitutes a retrospective observational cohort analysis. The study population comprised infants admitted to Guangdong Provincial People'

Large-scale land investment, disease prevalence and infant mortality in Cambodia.

Since 1996, Cambodia has leased around 65 percent of its arable land to companies in the form of Large-scale Land Acquisitions (LSLAs). We use locations of LSLAs with geocoded survey data from two datasets to estimate their effects on infant mortality and self-reported symptoms using a spatial difference-in-differences empirical strategy. Results show being within 10 km of an LSLA significantly increases the likelihood of death in the first year of life by 4.6 percentage points and having an illness by 10.5 to 14.9 percentage points for children five and under. Analysis of data from the Malari

The Association between Structural Racism and Infant Mortality: A Systematic Review.

The evidence that links structural racism to disparities in infant mortality across racial groups needs closer examination, given its central role in achieving health equity. We undertook a systematic review using four databases (MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete, APA PsycInfo, and SocINDEX) to determine whether structural racism is associated with infant mortality rates (IMR). The review used the PRISMA guidelines. Relevant articles between 1955 and 2024 were included. A narrative synthesis was conducted informed by critical race theory. Data quality was assessed using the Critical Appraisal

Infant Mortality due to Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, United States 2007-2021.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze temporal trends and geographic variations in infant mortality rate associated with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH-IMR) in the United States. METHODS: From 2007 to 2021, we used CDC-WONDER linked birth/death data to identify CDH-related infant deaths (ICD-10 code: Q79 as the underlying cause of death), analyze annual CDH-IMR trends, and explore associations with sex, gender, gestational age (GA), and U.S. state of birth. Descriptive statistics were derived, and bivariate analyses were conducted to discern differences in CDH-IMR by gender, race, and GA. CDH-IMR was e

Maternal Opioid Use Disorder and the Risk of Postneonatal Infant Mortality.

IMPORTANCE: The risk of serious long-term outcomes for infants born to individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) is not fully characterized, nor is it well understood whether risks are modified by infant diagnosis of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). OBJECTIVE: To characterize the risk of postneonatal infant mortality among infants with a NOWS diagnosis or born to individuals with OUD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The study team conducted a retrospective cohort study of 390 075 infants born from 2007 through 2018 to mothers who were enrolled in Tennessee Medicaid from 183 da

Health Insurance and Differences in Infant Mortality Rates in the US.

IMPORTANCE: Health insurance status is associated with differences in access to health care and health outcomes. Therefore, maternal health insurance type may be associated with differences in infant outcomes in the US. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether, among infants born in the US, maternal private insurance compared with public Medicaid insurance is associated with a lower infant mortality rate (IMR). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research expanded linked bir

Community Based Efforts to Address Infant Mortality and Disparities in Oklahoma.

IMPORTANCE: Oklahoma's infant mortality remains among the highest in the nation.1 Infant mortality rates are highest within the African American community.2 Physician and community partner efforts to decrease infant mortality are discussed to encourage more involvement in addressing infant mortality. The purpose of this article is to describe both provider and community-based efforts to combat infant mortality, particularly those focused on infant mortality disparities. OBSERVATIONS: The leading causes of infant deaths are prematurity, congenital malformations and/or chromosomal anomalies, an

Arsenic exposure and risk of spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, and infant mortality.

BACKGROUND: Millions of people worldwide are drinking water with elevated arsenic concentrations. Epidemiologic studies, mainly cross-sectional in design, have suggested that arsenic in drinking water may affect pregnancy outcome and infant health. We assessed the association of arsenic exposure with adverse pregnancy outcomes and infant mortality in a prospective cohort study of pregnant women. METHODS: A population-based, prospective cohort study of 2924 pregnant women was carried out during 2002-2004 in Matlab, Bangladesh. Spontaneous abortion was evaluated in relation to urinary arsenic c

Beri-beri: the major cause of infant mortality in Karen refugees.

During a prospective evaluation of malaria prophylaxis in pregnancy in a refugee population on the north-western border of Thailand from 1987 to 1990, an extremely high infant mortality rate (18%) was documented despite good access to health care. Infantile beri-beri was recognized as the main cause of death accounting for 40% of all infant mortality. Thereafter, severe vitamin B1 deficiency in infants was diagnosed and treated promptly. The impact of this was assessed prospectively from 1993 to 1996 in a second cohort study. The case fatality of infantile beri-beri fell from almost 100% to 7%

Infant mortality from congenital malformations in the United States, 1970-1997.

OBJECTIVE: We examined a trend in infant mortality caused by congenital malformations in the United States, particularly for the racial disparity between whites and nonwhites. METHODS: We used US annual summary data on cause-specific infant mortality for 1970-97 and detailed birth and infant death linked data for 1985-87, 1989-91, and 1995-97. RESULTS: Congenital malformations became a more prominent cause of infant mortality in 1997 and accounted for 22.1% of all infant deaths compared with 15.1% in 1970. Congenital malformations of nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems accounted

Influence of maternal ethnicity on infant mortality in Chicago, 1989-1996.

This study compared infant mortality rates between large ethnic groups in Chicago from 1989-1996. Infant mortality information about ethnic groups was compared using data from annual reports published by the Epidemiology Program, Department of Public Health, City of Chicago and vital statistics documents in Illinois, which include information on ethnicity. Chi-squared analysis was used to evaluate the differences between the proportions. A P value of < .05 was considered significant. During the study period, there were 461,974 births and 6407 infant deaths in Chicago. African Americans contrib
