Attitudes towards Down's syndrome: follow up of a cohort of 280 cases.

A follow up study of a cohort of 280 Down's syndrome (DS) fetuses was initiated in order to estimate the percentage of terminations of pregnancy, the prevalence at birth, the survival of DS children, the attitude of the parents at birth, and the medical and surgical care provided. The present study is a preliminary analysis of the data collected up to the age of 1 year. It shows that 43% of the 280 DS fetuses had died by the end of the first year of life, owing to termination of pregnancy (27%), late spontaneous abortion or stillbirth (4%), or death during the first year of life (12%). Among t

Infant injury death in Washington State, 1981 through 1990.

OBJECTIVE: To measure annual rates of infant injury death in Washington State and identify potential risk factors for infant injury death. METHODS: A population-based case-control study using a linked file of birth and death certificates for the years 1981 through 1990. RESULTS: The leading causes of infant injury death, per 100,000 live births, were intentional injury (9.1); suffocation, choking, or hanging (6.9); motor vehicle crashes (4.4); and drowning (3.2). Unintentional injury death rates fell steeply during the 1970s but remained steady during the 1980s. Infanticide rates rose during

«The child has lived and breathed.» Forensic examinations of newborns 1910-1912.

One hundred years ago, forensic examination of deceased infants was not an uncommon task for doctors in Norway. The key questions were whether the infant had been born alive and whether the manner of death could be explained. The decomposition of the corpses, which had often lain hidden long before they were examined, posed a considerable problem. Notwithstanding the known shortcomings in the criteria used for assessment of breathing (the lung flotation test), and the fact that the bodies were often severely decomposed, the lung flotation test and the supposed signs of asphyxiation were used i

[A statistical study of autopsy cases in the department of legal medicine, Hokkaido University School of Medicine, during the last 10 years (author's transl)].

The mediocolegal autopsies performed in the Department of Legal Medicine, Hokkaido University School of Medicine, during the 10-year period, 1965-1974 were 617 cases, 87 of them in newborns, 530 in infants and adults. Of cases autopsied as homicidal or suspicious deaths in infants and adults, 88.5% were recognized to be due to external causes, 9.1% to disease conditions and 2.5% undetermined. Of neonatal deaths, 10.3% were stillbirth, 78.2% live birth and 11.5% undetermined. Among the deaths due to external causes in infants and adults, 43.3% were homicidal, 7.2% suicidal, 32.6% accidental and

Deaths attributable to injuries in infants, United States, 1983-1991.

OBJECTIVE: To describe risk factors for injury death among infants in the United States by the specific external cause of death. METHODS: Data were analyzed from the US-linked birth/infant death files for the years 1983-1991. Potential risk factors for injury death were identified from birth certificate data and included both maternal and infant factors. Injury rates were calculated by external cause of death. Characteristics of infants who died from an injury were compared with those of the entire birth cohort. The independent effect of potential risk factors was assessed in multivariate ana

Families, murder, and insanity: a psychiatric review of paternal neonaticide.

Neonaticide is the killing of a newborn within the first 24 h of life. Although relatively uncommon, numerous cases of maternal neonaticide have been reported. To date, only two cases of paternal neonaticide have appeared in the literature. The authors review neonaticide and present two new case reports of paternal neonaticide. A psychodynamic explanation of paternal neonaticide is formulated. A new definition for neonaticide, more consistent with biological and psychological determinants, is suggested.

Case Report: From critical trauma to functional recovery: a novel surgical and hand-rearing strategy in a neonatal Hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas).

Infanticide and infant-directed aggression are recognized behaviors in non-human primates and can occasionally lead to severe neonatal trauma. This report describes the successful management of a life-threatening anorectal and sacro-coccygeal injury in a neonatal Hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) following an aggressive encounter with an adult male. The neonate presented in critical condition with profuse hemorrhage, sacro-coccygeal dislocation, and extensive damage to the perineal and anorectal tissues, resulting in hypovolemia and hemodynamic instability. After initial stabilization, emerge

Euthanasia in Mental Disorders: Clinical and Ethical Issues in the Cases of Two Women Suffering from Depression.

Background/Objectives: The extension of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide to individuals with mental disorders presents a profound ethical, clinical, and legal challenge. While increasingly accepted in some jurisdictions, their application in psychiatric contexts-particularly in cases of depression-raises concerns about diagnostic precision, therapeutic adequacy, and the validity of informed consent. This study examines two controversial Belgian cases to explore the complexities of euthanasia for psychological suffering. Methods: A qualitative case analysis was conducted through a qual

Infant and child mortality in Afghanistan: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Since 1990, global child and infant mortality rates have typically stabilized or decreased due to improved healthcare, vaccination rollouts, and international funding. However, Afghanistan continues to face the highest child and infant mortality rates globally, with 43 deaths per 1000 live births. This study aims to examine the factors contributing to this high mortality rate and propose interventions to address the issue. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed, focusing on articles published in English w

Post-conception reproductive competition in cooperatively breeding common marmosets.

Common marmosets are cooperatively breeding monkeys that exhibit high female reproductive skew. Subordinate females usually fail to breed as a consequence of ovulation suppression and inhibition of sexual behavior, and, even when they do breed, typically rear fewer infants than dominants. We evaluated possible mechanisms of post-conception reproductive competition by comparing hormonal profiles across pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, infant survivorship, and behavior in laboratory-housed families containing one (N=9) or two (N=7) breeding females. Breeding females in plurally breeding groups did

Reproduction in free-ranging Propithecus verreauxi: estrus and the relationship between multiple partner matings and fertilization.

Female sifaka mate selectively with one or more resident and/or non-resident males during the breeding season. Various adaptive explanations have been advanced to explain why female primates mate with multiple males including that 1) females seek to confuse paternity and thereby forestall male infanticide and/or ensure male infant care or 2) females seek to ensure fertilization. Assessing the power of fertilization insurance to explain mating patterns in females requires information on the temporal relationship between mating and ovarian hormones. The hormonal correlates of reproduction and ma

Patterns in paternal and maternal filicide: A comparative analysis of filicide cases in Turkey.

Filicide is the act of a parent killing their own offspring. Previous studies indicate that there are both commonalities and distinctions between filicides committed by mothers and fathers. The main objective of this study was to compare maternal and paternal filicide with a major focus on clinical and sociodemographic features of perpetrators, incident details, and victims. Filicide cases were examined at the bedded unit of the Expertise Department of Observation of the Council of Forensic Medicine that were referred by the Turkish Ministry of Justice. A total of 51 perpetrators and 57 victim

A Fresh Look at the History of SIDS.

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) became a named entity in 1969 and the term has been used to certify sudden unexpected infant deaths meeting certain demographic, epidemiologic, and pathologic criteria. Since it is a diagnosis of exclusion, there is inherent imprecision, and this has led the National Association of Medical Examiners to recommend that these deaths now be classified as "undetermined." This historical review article briefly analyzes anecdotal instances of SIDS described centuries ago as overlying, smothering, infanticide, and suffocation by bedclothes followed by a more detaile

Sex ratio at birth: scenario from normal- and high-level natural radiation areas of Kerala coast in south-west India.

Newborns were monitored for congenital malformations in four government hospitals located in high-level (ambient dose >1.5 mGy/year) and normal-level (≤ 1.5 mGy/year) natural radiation areas of Kerala, India, from August 1995 to December 2012. Sex ratio at birth (SRB) among live singleton newborns and among previous children, if any, of their mothers without history of any abortion, stillbirth or twins is reported here. In the absence of environmental stress or selective abortion of females, global average of SRB is about 1050 males to 1000 females. A total of 151,478 singleton, 1031 twins, 12

[Prevention of perinatal depression and anxiety with periconceptional care].

In the public mind, pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care is one of the most wonderful living experiences. However, epidemiological studies have shown that the risks of psychiatric disorders in the perinatal period are multiplying. Pregnancy entails with dramatic physical, mental and social role changing. The birth is a big, irreversible life event, and it should also be nominated as "rite of passage". This process represents a normative crisis during life, which needs new coping mechanisms to be developed. The stress and anxiety during the development of the fetus causes negative consequence

Short-term and long-term effects of postnatal exposure to an adult male in C57BL/6J mice.

Rodent models provide a valuable approach to elucidating the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the deleterious effects of childhood trauma and stress. Neonatal rats and mice emit ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) when separated from the dam and litter. USVs are suppressed in rat pups by exposure to the putatively infanticidal threat of an adult male. In the present study, C57BL/6J mouse pups were exposed to an anaesthetized (non-sire) adult C57BL/6J male for 3-min/day from postnatal days 2-14, and subsequently tested for anxiety-related behaviors (using the novel open field, elevated plus

Reduced reproductive efficiency in mice with schistosomiasis mansoni and in uninfected pregnant mice injected with antibodies against Schistosoma mansoni soluble egg antigens.

Female CBA/J mice were infected with approximately 15 cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni and mated with normal syngeneic males 7 weeks later. Uninfected mice were bred in parallel, and both groups were subsequently bred several more times. Pregnancies were documented by formation of vaginal plugs, and daily records were kept concerning the status of the pregnancies, delivery, and offspring. One hundred thirty-two pregnancies in uninfected mice resulted in 101 (77%) viable litters. In contrast, 133 pregnancies in mice infected with S. mansoni lead to 45 (34%) viable litters. Neonatal Research at the Archiospedale Santo Spirito in Rome.

Abandoning infants was a heritage of the Roman Empire. Foundling hospitals were established in Italy earlier and in greater number than in other countries; their goal was to prevent infanticides. The Foundling Hospital in Rome, established in the Santo Spirito Church in 1204, paved the way toward modern hospital care and child protection. The Order of the Holy Spirit was appointed by Pope Innocent III to care for foundlings, and set up a network of infant nurseries all over Europe. Poor unmarried pregnant women received obstetric services free of charge. Infants were admitted anonymously by th
