Jaw Osteomyelitis.

Mandibular osteomyelitis is caused most commonly by members of the oral flora in the setting of dental infection or dental manipulation, often in patients with underlying mandible pathology. Recognizing and treating mandible infections is especially challenging when they are associated with osteonecrotic conditions that are themselves difficult to manage and that may be associated with symptoms and testing results that mimic infection. Optimized diagnosis and management of mandible infections require collaboration between specialists in surgical and medical aspects of care, with the goal of cl

COVID-19 and its impact in the dental setting: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: The scoping review examined the evidence related to infection control and transmission measures of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a dental setting during this pandemic. Dental practitioners are normally guided in practice by set ethical principles, thus the researchers wanted to determine how these rules are managed during this pandemic. METHODS: A protocol specific for the objectives of this study was developed according to the criteria for a scoping review. Relevant databases (Pubmed, Scopus, Elsevier, Science Direct, Wiley), including online access to health/ dental organizations (W

Detection of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and biofilm formation among dental patients and dental health care workers: cross sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Dental clinics can harbor and transmit Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) which is a challenging antibiotic-resistant pathogen with global health implications. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence, resistance patterns and biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) isolated from dental patients and dental health care workers (DHCWs) . MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred nasal swab specimens were collected aseptically from 120 dental patients and 80 DHCWs across Egypt including Cairo, Giza, and Upper Egypt over a 12 –month period. The study inc

Beyond the Needle: Knowledge of Blood-Borne Infection Transmission and Prevention Among Dental Students-A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Aim: Dental practice involves continuous exposure to saliva and blood, creating persistent opportunities for cross-infection if contaminated instruments are not processed correctly. This study aimed to evaluate dental students' knowledge regarding blood-borne infections and infection prevention measures, and to compare knowledge levels according to academic year and sex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A structured questionnaire consisting of 21 single-best-answer questions was administered to 93 undergraduate dental students (Years I-VI) from the Faculty of Dental Medicine, "Gr

The effect of disinfecting alginate and addition cured silicone rubber impression materials on the physical properties of impressions and resultant casts.

Four commercially available disinfectants were tested and the dimensional stability and detail reproduction of impressions and their resultant casts were measured according to ANSI/ISO specifications. Results showed that alginate impressions immersed in chlorhexidine exhibited considerable dimensional change if not poured immediately. Moreover, alginate impressions soaked in a paraldehyde agent (Virkon) for more than 2 minutes produced casts of inferior surface quality whilst those sprayed and left in contact with phenol derivatives (C&J Spray) for 30 minutes resulted in casts which demonstrat

Type 2 diabetes complicated by multiple pyomyositis.

A 40-year-old man was hospitalized due to fever, muscular swelling and pain. He had poorly controlled diabetes with many dental caries and repeated periodontitis. CT revealed multiple intramuscular abscesses; administration of antibiotics and pus drainage were performed. Intraoral infection was suspected as the route of infection of pyomyositis, and a total of six teeth was extracted. In the clinical treatment of diabetic patients, it is important to instruct patients to routinely check for the presence of traumatic injuries of the lower extremities, and to have routine check-ups and dental ca

Dental Unit Waterlines: Disinfection and Management.

Dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) are the conduits within the dental chair through which water derived from the municipal or other peripheral supply systems flows through the dental chair to reach the dental patient. The quality of the water so delivered must have a low pathogenic microbial burden so as to be safe for the patient and the dental personnel. Regulatory bodies have therefore set minimum standards for the quality of water that exits from DUWLs as part of routine infection control. Adopting a comprehensive approach that combines physical, chemical, and automated methodologies is recomm

Mycosis fungoides refractory to treatment - importance of a multidisciplinary approach.

We report a case of difficult-to-control mycosis fungoides (MF), where the role of the dental surgeon was crucial for the control and prognosis of the disease. A 62-year-old female patient diagnosed with MF had a previous record of red patches and small raised bumps on the face, along with a cancerous growth in the cervical and vulvar region. The patient was initially treated with methotrexate and local radiotherapy without resolution. Chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone was then started (CHOP protocol). The dental team of a reference hospital was consu

Dental lesions: diagnosis and treatment.

Oral health care has been an integral part of the care of patients with HIV infection and AIDS since the disease was first identified in the early eighties. The spectrum of HIV-associated opportunistic diseases occurring in the oral cavity propelled dental health care providers to the forefront of patient care. Infection control issues soon became important in oral health care for patients infected with HIV, and for the first decade these two issues overshadowed the concerns about appropriate management of the dental needs of HIV-infected patients. Several concerns need to be considered in the

Maintaining women's oral health.

Women must adopt health-promoting strategies for both general health and the oral cavity, because the health of a woman's body and oral cavity are bidirectional. For general health-maintenance strategies, dental practitioners should actively advise women to minimize alcohol use, abstain from or cease smoking, stay physically active, and choose the right foods to nourish both the body and mind. For oral health-maintenance strategies, dental practitioners should advise women on how to prevent or control oral infections, particularly dental caries and periodontal diseases. Specifically, women nee

Dental Infection of Porphyromonas gingivalis Induces Preterm Birth in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have revealed a link between dental infection and preterm birth or low birth weight (PTB/LBW), however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Progress in understanding the associated mechanisms has been limited in part by lack of an animal model for chronic infection-induced PTB/LBW, mimicking pregnancy under conditions of periodontitis. We aimed to establish a mouse model of chronic periodontitis in order to investigate the link between periodontitis and PTB/LBW. METHODS: To establish chronic inflammation beginning with dental infection, we surgically

The Associations of Dental and Periodontal Lesions with the Microvascular Complications in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is closely related to periodontal disease and dental lesions, disorders which through dental infection and metabolic imbalance become negatively potentiated and cause a vicious circle that is almost impossible to break. The aim of this research was to study if the severity of dental and periodontal lesions is related to the presence of microvascular complications and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: In total, 112 subjects with T2DM that underwent a dental evaluation were enrolled in this case-control study. The study gro

Hand Scrubbing and Donning of Sterile Surgical Gloves: An Observational Clinical Audit of Novice Dental Surgeons.

Background The most critical factors in the satisfactory recovery of a patient post-surgery are obedience to sterilization and aseptic protocol. Using aseptic principles, the standard hand scrubbing and gloving procedure prevents contamination of the surgical site and aids in infection control.  Methods Eighty dental interns were observed during minor oral surgical procedures for hand scrubbing and donning sterile surgical gloves, following the steps and guidelines provided by World Health Organization (WHO). The dental interns were evaluated, and in order to enhance their understanding of han

Association between cheilitis granulomatosa and odontogenic infections: A case-control study.

The association between cheilitis granulomatosa and dental infections (dental caries and apical periodontitis) is still not well understood. Herein, we aimed to investigate the association in large hospital cases with cohort controls. Cheilitis granulomatosa cases (n = 181) were retrieved from Peking University Hospital of Stomatology and age- and sex-matched to controls (n = 181). The χ2 -test, Student's t-test, and Mann-Whitney U-test were used to compare the differences between groups. The χ2 -test and odds ratio were used to verify if there was an association and risk relationship. The res
