Saliva is a non-negligible factor in the spread of COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2, a novel emerging coronavirus, has caused severe disease (COVID-19), and rapidly spread worldwide since the beginning of 2020. SARS-CoV-2 mainly spreads by coughing, sneezing, droplet inhalation, and contact. SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in saliva samples, making saliva a potential transmission route for COVID-19. The participants in dental practice confront a particular risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection due to close contact with the patients and potential exposure to saliva-contaminated droplets and aerosols generated during dental procedures. In addition, saliva-contaminated surfaces c

Orthokeratology lens-related Acanthamoeba keratitis: case report and analytical review.

Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a rare but severe ocular infection with a significant risk of vision loss. Contact lens use is the main risk factor for AK. The orthokeratology (OK) lens, a specially designed contact lens, has been used worldwide as an effective method of myopia control. However, the OK lens is associated with an increased risk of Acanthamoeba infection. Many primary practitioners are concerned about this infection because of its relative rarity, the lack of promising therapeutic medications, and the need for referral. We herein report two cases of AK associated with OK lenses,

Guidelines for Reprocessing Ultrasound Transducers: 2026.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound equipment is recognised as a potential source of harmful microorganisms which could lead to clinical infection. This highlights the importance of standardised infection prevention and control strategies for ultrasound practice across Australia and New Zealand. This revised guideline supersedes the similarly named 2017 guideline and was collaboratively developed by the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) and the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control (ACIPC). METHODS: A multidisciplinary working group was assembled consisting of ul

Mumps transmission in hospitals.

Although sporadic transmission of mumps within hospitals to patients and staff is well documented, outbreaks of mumps within hospitals have only rarely been reported. The widespread mumps outbreaks that occurred in Tennessee in 1986-1987 provided an opportunity to assess the extent of the problems caused by mumps in hospitals. Information was obtained from 146 (95%) of 154 infection control practitioners in the state. Infection control problems caused by mumps were reported from 17 (12%) of 146 hospitals. The 17 hospitals in which these incidents occurred were located in counties that accounte

Neglected tropical diseases: diagnosis, clinical management, treatment and control.

Branded in 2005, "neglected tropical diseases" have gained traction in terms of advocacy, interest for research, enhanced funding and political will for their control and eventual elimination. Starting with an initial set of 13 neglected tropical diseases--seven helminth, three bacterial and three protozoal infections--the list considerably expanded to more than 40 diseases that now also includes viral, fungal and ectoparasitic infections. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the neglected tropical diseases, their causative agents and the current geographical distribution, in

Comparison of findings using ultrasonography and cystoscopy in urogenital schistosomiasis in a public health centre in rural Angola.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a chronic disease caused by infection with parasitic worms of the genus Schistosoma. In sub-Saharan Africa, infections with S. haematobium are most common. Cystoscopic examination (CE) has been accepted as the goldstandard test for detecting the late manifestations of schistosomiasis, including urothelial cancer of the bladder. However, this procedure is invasive and 10-40% of tumours may remain undetected. A non-invasive examination and a new generation of biomarkers are needed for better monitoring of the disease. OBJECTIVE: To assess the usefulness of ultraso

An examination of nurses' practices when performing aseptic technique for wound dressings.

The purpose of this study was to establish if nurses' actions when carrying out 'aseptic technique' using the 'gloves technique' are simple and based on up-to-date knowledge and do not incur unnecessary wastage. A sample of convenience was used involving 21 trained nurses. Observation and formal interviews were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Results showed that not all nurses in the sample applied a 'simple aseptic technique'. The rationale for the practice of aseptic technique was not always research based, though other aspects of wound management were derived from researc

HIV and the breast.

HIV infection and antiretroviral therapy may alter the spectrum and frequency of diseases that affect the breast. The differential diagnosis of conditions of the breast that a practitioner may encounter in HIV-infected persons includes infection, morphologic alterations, and malignancy. Atypical infections may involve the breast as CD4+ T-cell counts wane. More commonly, HIV-infected persons present with gynecomastia, which may be caused by a variety of conditions, including exposure to HAART. True gynecomastia, resulting from proliferation of male breast ducts and periductal stroma, might be

Developing Professionalism in Dentistry: A Systematic Review.

This article was migrated. The article was marked as recommended. Background: Professionalism is a core competency and concern in all health professional education. Evidence from nursing and medicine suggests the evidence base for approaches to developing and assessing professionalism at undergraduate level is weak. In 2015, notifications, imposed sanctions, and in some cases de-registration against dental practitioners for reported incidences of breaches in infection control in New South Wales, Australia, have refreshed the essential need for dental practitioners to promote public safety and
