Cyanogenesis in Aralia spinosa (Araliaceae).

A systematic survey of Aralia spinosa (Araliaceae), covering an entire growing season and including aboveground organs at various developmental stages, revealed that only about half of all samples collected showed cyanogenesis. Cyanogenesis was detected in inflorescences and leaves but is apparently restricted to certain harvest times or developmental stages. The structurally unusual triglochinin, characterized by a hex-2-enedioic acid partial structure, was the only cyanogenic glycoside detected. This is the first description of triglochinin in this species and in the family of Araliaceae. Tr

Comparative transcriptomic analysis indicates genes associated with local and systemic resistance to Colletotrichum graminicola in maize.

The hemibiotrophic fungus Colletotrichum graminicola may cause severe damage to maize, affecting normal development of the plant and decreasing grain yield. In this context, understanding plant defense pathways at the inoculation site and systemically in uninoculated tissues can help in the development of genetic engineering of resistance against this pathogen. Previous work has discussed the molecular basis of maize - C. graminicola interaction. However, many genes involved in defense have not yet been exploited for lack of annotation in public databases. Here, changes in global gene expressi

Survival of Cd-exposed Arabidopsis thaliana: are these plants reproductively challenged?

Plants exposed to cadmium (Cd) show morphological and physiological disorders. To increase our knowledge regarding Cd-induced signalling, most often the effects of acute exposure are investigated. However, this does not allow in-depth analysis of morphological effects. Therefore, we chronically exposed Arabidopsis thaliana plants to environmentally realistic Cd concentrations (5 or 10 μM) and, using a described phenotypic framework methodology, we determined the impact of Cd on the plant's ability to complete its life cycle and produce germinative seeds. Visible Cd-induced morphological change

Identification of bacteria present in the harvest and postharvest stages in medical cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) grown in Colombia.

Cannabis has various secondary metabolites, such as cannabinoids (THC and CBD), which are of great interest due to their interactions with the human body's cannabinoid system, offering therapeutic effects, which has led to an increase in crop production. This research aimed to characterize the bacteria present in medicinal cannabis inflorescences during the harvest and post-harvest stages. Cannabis inflorescences of two commercial genotypes (Gen A and Gen B) were incubated on Luria Bertani agar to evaluate the presence of bacteria, and macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the resulti

Effect of Crown Layers on Reproductive Effort and Success in Andromonoecious Aesculus indica (Wall. ex Camb.) Hook (Sapindaceae) in a Temperate Forest of Garhwal Himalaya.

The andromonoecy is an unusual sex expression in trees in which an individual plant bears both functionally staminate and hermaphrodite flowers on the inflorescences. This study aims to investigate the effect of crown layers on the floral biology and reproductive effort of Aesculus indica (Wall. ex Camb.) Hook. The results revealed that the peak period of anthesis was between 06:00 and 08:00 h of the day. Male flower production was predominantly higher as compared to the perfect flowers on the inflorescences. There was no significant variation between total pollen production in staminate and p

Non-Invasive and Confirmatory Differentiation of Hermaphrodite from Both Male and Female Cannabis Plants Using a Hand-Held Raman Spectrometer.

Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) is a dioecious plant that produces both male and female inflorescences. In nature, male and female plants can be found with nearly equal frequency, which determines species out-crossing. In cannabis farming, only female plants are preferred due to their high yield of cannabinoids. In addition to unfavorable male plants, commercial production of cannabis faces the appearance of hermaphroditic inflorescences, species displaying both pistillate flowers and anthers. Such plants can out-cross female plants, simultaneously producing undesired seeds. The problem of herma

Brassica oleracea Var italica by-Products Prevent Lipid Accumulation and Cell Death in a Liver Cell Model of Lipid Toxicity.

Obesity, a rising concern in the Eastern world, encompasses several co-morbidities, namely non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Potential natural-based interventions to decrease the burden of obesity complications are being investigated. Many of the edible parts of plants are not sold for consumption and end up as massive waste, losing nutritional potential. In fact, a sizeable amount of waste is generated within the different steps of the food supply chain, representing a massive loss of both plant material and natural resources. A good example is Brassica by-products (BBPs). The object

An Ethyl Methanesulfonate-Induced GIF1 Splicing Site Mutation in Sesame Is Associated with Floral Malformation and Small Seed Size.

Flower and inflorescence architecture play fundamental roles in crop seed formation and final yield. Sesame is an ancient oilseed crop. Exploring the genetic mechanisms of inflorescence architecture and developmental characteristics is necessary for high-yield breeding improvements for sesame and other crops. In this study, we performed a genetic analysis of the sesame mutant css1 with a malformed corolla and small seed size that was mutagenized by ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) from the cultivar Yuzhi 11. Inheritance analysis of the cross derived from css1 mutant × Yuzhi 11 indicated that the m

Variety-Specific Flowering of Sugarcane Induced by the Smut Fungus Sporisorium scitamineum.

Sugarcane smut is the most severe sugarcane disease in China. The typical symptom is the emerging of a long, black whip from the top of the plant cane. However, in 2018, for the first time we observed the floral structures of sugarcane infected by smut fungus in the planting fields of China. Such smut-associated inflorescence in sugarcane was generally curved and short, with small black whips emerging from glumes of a single floret on the cane stalk. Compatible haploid strains, named Ssf1-7 (MAT-1) and Ssf1-8 (MAT-2), isolated from teliospores that formed black whips in inflorescence of sugarc

Different Temperature and UV Patterns Modulate Berry Maturation and Volatile Compounds Accumulation in Vitis sp.

Volatile compounds (VCs) in grapevine berries play an important role in wine quality; however, such compounds and vine development can be sensitive to environmental conditions. Due to this sensitivity, changes in temperature patterns due to global warming are likely to further impact grape production and berry composition. The aim of this study was to determine the possible effects of different growing-degree day accumulation patterns on berry ripening and composition at harvest. An experimental field was conducted using Vitis sp. L'Acadie blanc, in Nova Scotia, Canada. Using on-the-row mini-g

Genetic potential for changes in breeding systems: Predicted and observed trait changes during artificial selection for male and female allocation in a gynodioecious species.

PREMISE: Evolution of separate sexes from hermaphroditism often proceeds through gynodioecy, but genetic constraints on this process are poorly understood. Genetic (co-)variances and between-sex genetic correlations were used to predict evolutionary responses of multiple reproductive traits in a sexually dimorphic gynodioecious species, and predictions were compared with observed responses to artificial selection. METHODS: Schiedea (Caryophyllaceae) is an endemic Hawaiian lineage with hermaphroditic, gynodioecious, subdioecious, and dioecious species. We measured genetic parameters of Schiede

Delimitation of the wild banana Musa acuminata subspecific complex (Musaceae) in Thailand.

Thailand, a recognized cradle of diversity for the wild banana Musa acuminata, has long been considered home to four subspecies: siamea, burmannica, malaccensis, and microcarpa. However, recent extensive field surveys across the country have unveiled a more complex picture, necessitating a revision of their taxonomic classification. This study revisits the subspecific classification of M. acuminata in Thailand, reassessing the circumscriptions, descriptions, and distributions of previously recognized subspecies using morphological and biogeographic evidence. The findings reveal a distinct new

Curcuma deliniana, a Rare New Curcuma Species (Zingiberaceae) Previously Misidentified as C. wenyujin.

A new triploid Curcuma species from Guangxi in China, C. deliniana, is described and illustrated. It was previously misidentified as the valuable medicinal plant C. wenyujin but can be readily distinguished from the latter by its rarely branched rhizomes, slender shoots, narrow leaf blades, and small inflorescences. The species is used as a substitute or adulterant of another medicinal species, C. kwangsiensis, from which it differs in larger, nearly globose main rhizomes; green leaf blades that are glabrous adaxially and sparsely puberulent or glabrous abaxially; inflorescence with fewer, loo

Host Plant Biochemical Influence on the Foraging and Food Utilization of Poecilocerus pictus and Danaus chrysippus on Calotropis gigantea: A Behavioral Ecology Approach.

Poecilocerus pictus and Danaus chrysippus are two common herbivorous insects that share the same host plant, Calotropis gigantea, yet they exhibit distinct feeding preferences and food utilization patterns across leaf ages. D. chrysippus larvae performed better on young leaves, which contain higher water content and suitable nutrients; before feeding, they cut leaf surfaces and inflorescence bases to interrupt latex flow and access floral sugars. P. pictus thrived on mature leaves, which offer a more balanced nutrient composition and moisture level; nymphs made serial cuts on the lower leaf su

Seed the Difference: QTL Mapping Reveals Several Major Loci for Seed Size in Cannabis sativa L.

Cannabis sativa L. has been cultivated for millennia as a source of food and fibre. Increasing demand for functional foods has renewed interest in C. sativa seeds (hempseeds), which are rich in essential fatty acids and amino acids. However, a near-global moratorium on C. sativa cultivation and research throughout most of the 20th century has delayed crop improvement using modern breeding approaches. As a result, genetic loci contributing to key agronomic traits, including with respect to maximizing yield as a seed crop, remain largely unknown. In this study, a feminized segregating F2 mapping

Cyanide resistant respiration is involved in temperature rise in ripening mangoes.

Thermogenesis is attributed to the cyanide resistant respiration in the inflorescence of Arum lilies. Although cyanide resistant respiration is ubiquitously operative in the plant systems, it has never been correlated with thermogenesis except for the above example. Internal temperature of the ripening mango increased from 29.0 degrees C to 38.9 degrees C during its ripening process. Concomitantly, it was coupled with the increase in total respiration and cyanide resistant respiration as well. Implication of cyanide resistant respiration in thermogenesis has been discussed in relation to the r
