Mapping of Networks to Detect Priority Zoonoses in Jordan.

Early detection of emerging disease events is a priority focus area for cooperative bioengagement programs. Communication and coordination among national disease surveillance and response networks are essential for timely detection and control of a public health event. Although systematic information sharing between the human and animal health sectors can help stakeholders detect and respond to zoonotic diseases rapidly, resource constraints, and other barriers often prevent efficient cross-sector reporting. The purpose of this research project was to map the laboratory and surveillance networ

Characterising global antimicrobial resistance research explains why One Health solutions are slow in development: An application of AI-based gap analysis.

The global health crisis posed by increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) implicitly requires solutions based a One Health approach, yet multisectoral, multidisciplinary research on AMR is rare and huge knowledge gaps exist to guide integrated action. This is partly because a comprehensive survey of past research activity has never performed due to the massive scale and diversity of published information. Here we compiled 254,738 articles on AMR using Artificial Intelligence (AI; i.e., Natural Language Processing, NLP) methods to create a database and information retrieval system for knowled

One Health communication channels: a qualitative case study of swine influenza in Canada in 2020.

BACKGROUND: With increased attention to the importance of integrating the One Health approach into zoonotic disease surveillance and response, a greater understanding of the mechanisms to support effective communication and information sharing across animal and human health sectors is needed. The objectives of this qualitative case study were to describe the communication channels used between human and animal health stakeholders and to identify the elements that have enabled the integration of the One Health approach. METHODS: We combined documentary research with interviews with fifteen sta

Dementia inclusive retail outlets: a scoping review of strategies to support people living with dementia in the retail industry.

BACKGROUND: Supermarket shopping is a valued everyday activity that supports autonomy and social engagement for people living with dementia (PLWD). However, engagement with retail environments can be challenging due to difficulties with product recognition and selection, navigation, and sensory overwhelm. Despite increasing efforts to develop dementia-friendly communities, there is currently no comprehensive synthesis of evidence examining how PLWD experience retail environments or which strategies effectively support their engagement. METHODS: PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and EMBASE we

What you plant may not be what you bought: morphological and genetic discordance in specialty Coffea arabica L. cultivars from Ecuador.

The genetic identity of coffee cultivars is fundamental to the specialty coffee sector, where premium prices are paid under the assumption that the purchased planting material corresponds to the declared variety. However, many producing countries lack the certification infrastructure necessary to guarantee this identity in their informal seed systems, exposing producers to undetected varietal non-conformity. In this study, we examine a case from a specialty coffee (Coffea arabica L.) farm in southern Ecuador where seeds labeled as Sidra (USD 100/kg) and Gesha (USD 500/kg) were purchased withou

A Multidisciplinary Investigation of the First Chikungunya Virus Outbreak in Matadi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Early March 2019, health authorities of Matadi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo alerted a sudden increase in acute fever/arthralgia cases, prompting an outbreak investigation. We collected surveillance data, clinical data, and laboratory specimens from clinical suspects (for CHIKV-PCR/ELISA, malaria RDT), semi-structured interviews with patients/caregivers about perceptions and health seeking behavior, and mosquito sampling (adult/larvae) for CHIKV-PCR and estimation of infestation levels. The investigations confirmed a large CHIKV outbreak that lasted February-June 2019. The total case

The macroeconomic impact of a dengue outbreak: Case studies from Thailand and Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is spreading in (sub)tropical areas, and half of the global population is at risk. The macroeconomic impact of dengue extends beyond healthcare costs. This study evaluated the impact of dengue on gross domestic product (GDP) based on approaches tailored to two dengue-endemic countries, Thailand and Brazil, from the tourism and workforce perspectives, respectively. FINDINGS: Because the tourism industry is a critical economic sector for Thailand, lost tourism revenues were estimated to analyze the impact of a dengue outbreak. An input-output model estimated that the direct e

Innovative public-private partnership to target subsidised antimalarials: a study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial to evaluate a community intervention in Western Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: There are concerns of inappropriate use of subsidised antimalarials due to the large number of fevers treated in the informal sector with minimal access to diagnostic testing. Targeting antimalarial subsidies to confirmed malaria cases can lead to appropriate, effective therapy. There is evidence that community health volunteers (CHVs) can be trained to safely and correctly use rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). This study seeks to evaluate the public health impact of targeted antimalarial subsidies delivered through a partnership between CHVs and the private retail sector. METHODS

Availability and quality of anti-malarials among private sector outlets in Myanmar in 2012: results from a large, community-based, cross-sectional survey before a large-scale intervention.

BACKGROUND: Global malaria control efforts are threatened by the spread and emergence of artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum parasites. In 2012, the widespread sale of partial courses of artemisinin-based monotherapy was suspected to take place in the highly accessed, weakly regulated private sector in Myanmar, posing potentially major threats to drug resistance. This study investigated the presence of artemisinin-based monotherapies in the Myanmar private sector, particularly as partial courses of therapy, to inform the targeting of future interventions to stop artemisinin resistance.

Foul wind, spirits and witchcraft: illness conceptions and health-seeking behaviour for malaria in the Gambia.

BACKGROUND: As the disease burden in the Gambia has reduced considerably over the last decade, heterogeneity in malaria transmission has become more marked, with infected but asymptomatic individuals maintaining the reservoir. The identification, timely diagnosis and treatment of malaria-infected individuals are crucial to further reduce or eliminate the human parasite reservoir. This ethnographic study focused on the relationship between local beliefs of the cause of malaria and treatment itineraries of suspected cases. METHODS: An ethnographic qualitative study was conducted in twelve rural

Analysis and interpretation of the heterogeneity of community-based health insurance attributes and preferences in Senegal: evidence from a discrete choice experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Community-based health insurance (CBHI) schemes have been widely promoted to improve financial protection and expand access to healthcare in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly among populations working in the informal sector who lack access to formal health insurance. In Sub-Saharan Africa, CBHI has been implemented as part of broader efforts to advance universal health coverage (UHC), yet enrolment often remains low. In Senegal, CBHI schemes aim to expand insurance coverage among informal sector populations, but participation remains limited and uneven across

'I am my own doctor': Coping, creativity and entering do-it-yourself antibiotic regimes in a refugee camp in Lebanon.

As everyday life in Shatila refugee camp in Lebanon is heavily constrained by structural factors such as poverty, discrimination and limited access to quality healthcare, camp residents find ways to survive - to cope. Through six months of ethnographic fieldwork with participant observation and qualitative interviews in the informal pharmaceutical sector in Shatila, I observed how camp residents use everyday coping tactics to access and use antibiotics; they climb the antibiotic hierarchy, become their own doctors, try different antibiotics through trial and error, and access healthcare and an

Disability-inclusive responses to COVID-19: Lessons learnt from research on social protection in low- and middle-income countries.

The one billion people living with disabilities globally already face a heightened risk of poverty, which will likely be exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic unless interventions to address its economic impacts are disability-inclusive. This paper draws on the literature on disability, poverty and social protection in low- and middle-income countries to explore the pathways through which the current pandemic may increase the risk of poverty amongst people with disabilities, such as loss of income from disruptions to work, particularly in the informal sector, and higher future spending and prod

The impact of animations to improve health-information recall in patients with lower back pain: a quasi-experimental study.

PURPOSE: Globally, low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of years lived with disability. Clear communication between patients and health professionals is essential to improve health outcomes, lower the costs of health services, and plays a central role in avoiding fragmented LBP care. Commonly, patient information is provided verbally or in written text, which may require high health literacy. Research suggests animations can increase information acquisition in patients with low health literacy. This study was conducted to investigate the impact of animations in improving health information
