Mapping the Scientific Mesolevel: Where Are We Aiming?

Susan Wolf et al.'s article "Filling the Network Gap in Research Ethics: Analyzing Ethical Issues at Scale in Big Team Science" aims to provide analysis of ethics at the level of scientific teams. But is the emphasis on formal teams the appropriate target? In this commentary, I argue that we ought to take a much broader view, looking at the "interstitial spaces" of scientific research, including the informal networks of power and esteem that shape scientific careers, the formation and function of large teams, receipt of funding, and publication. I claim that these informal networks do as much,

The hierarchical levels of information activities in the subject's psychology and cognition.

The subject's psychological and cognitive activities are important interdisciplinary issues in psychology, cognitive science, and philosophy. The Chinese philosophy of information innovatively provides a philosophical definition of the concepts of subject and object from the dimension of information activity, while also making specific provisions for the cognitive activities of the subject. The subject's psychology and cognition are an activity of advanced grasping and creation of information. The subject's information activities have five basic levels. Arranged from lower to higher, they are:

Formation of a Translational Science Professional Identity: A Heuristic Framework and Research Agenda.

Based upon substantive professional engagement over two decades and the collective action of diverse professionals, this conceptual paper proposes that translational science (TS) is best understood as a meta-discipline. As with Science, Technology, Education, and Mathematics (STEM) or Information Sciences, meta-disciplines rely on coherent professional identities. Positioning TS in this way foregrounds the need to develop such identities across diverse contributors. TS team members often begin with deep domain-specific expertise followed by acquisition of cross-cutting translational capabiliti

Perceptions of science, science communication, and climate change attitudes in 68 countries - the TISP dataset.

Science is integral to society because it can inform individual, government, corporate, and civil society decision-making on issues such as public health, new technologies or climate change. Yet, public distrust and populist sentiment challenge the relationship between science and society. To help researchers analyse the science-society nexus across different geographical and cultural contexts, we undertook a cross-sectional population survey resulting in a dataset of 71,922 participants in 68 countries. The data were collected between November 2022 and August 2023 as part of the global Many L

[The 1853-1856 cholera epidemic in the Portuguese press].

The article examines science and technology communication aimed at a non-specialized audience, using the general press as the main source in this endeavor to capture an image of the popularization of science in Portugal. Based on the fact that the nineteenth-century press was overtly concerned with garnering an audience and spreading knowledge, the study uses news, articles, and advertisements about the 1853-1856 cholera epidemic to assess the era's scientific knowledge (especially about prevention and treatment) and how this information was conveyed to society and used by it.

[Scientific research in times of pandemics.].

When a pandemic occurs, scientific research moves fast in order to achieve readily results, such as effective therapies to fight the SARS-CoV-2 and vaccines. But this high-speed science, engaged by the emergency and characterized by the explosion of online publications in preprint form not subject to scrutiny by peer reviewers, carries some risks. And it represents a challenge to maintain research integrity and to comply with those globally recognized standard principles of fairness. Competition and the pressure to publish immediately - a way of encouraging rapid data sharing - can favor the d

A quantitative account of how limited information sharing undermines comprehensive literature syntheses.

Crucial aspects of reproducible, replicable and reusable science include the responsiveness of study authors for clarifications and the availability of research data and analysis results. Getting in contact with authors and obtaining information or results is, however, not always straight-forward. Here we report and discuss the issues and obstacles we faced when contacting authors of scientific papers with such requests. Our investigation rests on the results of a retrospective quantitative analysis of research data requests sent to authors of neuroimaging studies for a series of meta-analyses

Communicating scientific uncertainty: Exploring science journalists' understandings, challenges, and strategies.

Science journalists are central intermediaries in communicating the uncertainties of science to the public. Socio-scientific issues like COVID-19 and climate change highlight the importance of addressing uncertainties to support informed decision-making while underscoring the complexities involved. Based on 13 semi-structured interviews with science journalists, this study links their conceptual understanding of scientific uncertainty to the strategies and challenges they face in communicating it. Results suggest that journalists primarily see uncertainty as the inability of science to provide

Communicating trust and trustworthiness through scientists' biographies: Benevolence beliefs.

A goal of many science communicators is to foster trust in scientists and their work. This study investigates if existing textual resources that scientists create in the course of their regular activities can be improved to enhance perceptions of scientists as trustworthy. Building on Mayer et al.'s integrative model of organizational trust, we examine how communicating benevolence through short biographies can affect trustworthiness perceptions using a 3 (degree of benevolence information: high, unspecified, low) × 3 (research area: crop genetics, corn and soy genetics, biotechnology use) sur

Popular culture and genetics; friend, foe or something more complex?

While many people enjoy popular culture, these transactional experiences may not translate into formal or academic learning about a subject. In education and science communication settings popular culture is often presented as a source of inaccurate information about science. Different publics are often positioned as, at best, undiscriminating consumers and at worst victims of distorted scientific information. We explore how people use their own knowledge and interests to engage with genetics. Here, data from family interviews are used to illustrate how participants draw on popular culture as

Ten Core Concepts for Ensuring Data Equity in Public Health.

IMPORTANCE: Public health decisions increasingly rely on large-scale data and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and mobile health. However, many populations-including those in rural areas, with disabilities, experiencing homelessness, or living in low- and middle-income regions of the world-remain underrepresented in health datasets, leading to biased findings and suboptimal health outcomes for certain subgroups. Addressing data inequities is critical to ensuring that technological and digital advances improve health outcomes for all. OBSERVATIONS: This article proposes 10
