Chlamydia retesting and retest positivity rates: results from a state-wide laboratory data linkage study in Tasmania, 2012-13.

UNLABELLED: Background Chlamydia re-infection increases the likelihood of adverse long-term sequelae. Clinical guidelines recommend retesting at 3-12 months for individuals with positive results, to detect re-infections. Retesting and test positivity levels were measured in young people who previously tested positive for chlamydia infection. METHODS: All chlamydia tests conducted during 2012-13 in Tasmanian residents aged 15-29 years were linked. Retesting and retest positivity rates were calculated by sex, age, socioeconomic indicators and test timeframe. RESULTS: Retesting rates were highe

Unsupervised eye pupil localization through differential geometry and local self-similarity matching.

The automatic detection and tracking of human eyes and, in particular, the precise localization of their centers (pupils), is a widely debated topic in the international scientific community. In fact, the extracted information can be effectively used in a large number of applications ranging from advanced interfaces to biometrics and including also the estimation of the gaze direction, the control of human attention and the early screening of neurological pathologies. Independently of the application domain, the detection and tracking of the eye centers are, currently, performed mainly using i

Studies on magnetism and bioelectromagnetics for 45 years: from magnetic analog memory to human brain stimulation and imaging.

Forty-five years of studies on magnetism and bioelectromagnetics, in our laboratory, are presented. This article is prepared for the d'Arsonval Award Lecture. After a short introduction of our early work on magnetic analog memory, we review and discuss the following topics: (1) Magnetic nerve stimulation and localized transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the human brain by figure-eight coils; (2) Measurements of weak magnetic fields generated from the brain by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) systems, called magnetoencephalography (MEG), and its application in function

Is it appropriate, or ethical, to use health data collected for the purpose of direct patient care to develop computerized predictive decision support tools?

The increasing use of clinical decision support systems (CDSS) to assist clinicians in decision-making is pushing the limits of information technology. The emergence of Electronic Health Records (EHR) coupled with enriched health information standards such as HL7 CDA, SNOMED, ICD-10 and LOINC have provided a rich environment for massive data collection and analysis by healthcare providers. This immense increase in data collection has also provided a gateway for the application of various data mining techniques on clinical datasets so as to measure health status (i.e. function, comfort and like

Confronting the opioid crisis with consumer health information: a look at East Tennessee.

BACKGROUND: Starting in the 1990s, health care providers began prescribing opioids to patients as pain relievers, believing they were safe. However, many patients became addicted to these pills. In 2017, the US Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency to fight the opioid epidemic. This crisis was prevalent in East Tennessee, where many residents were prescribed opioids. CASE PRESENTATION: Librarians at an academic medical center library in East Tennessee analyzed the health information requests related to pain, mental health, and addiction over the last fifte

Benchmarks and methods for 3D medical image retrieval.

The increasing use of medical imaging in healthcare settings presents a significant challenge due to the additional workload for radiologists, yet it also offers opportunity for enhancing healthcare outcomes if effectively leveraged. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based 3D medical image retrieval holds the potential to alleviate radiologists' burden by offering evidence-based diagnostics and predictions that can enhance the scale and accuracy of radiologists' work, while simultaneously supporting output verification for safety and regulatory compliance. Despite its promise, the field of 3D medic

Assessing the coverage of PubMed, Embase, OpenAlex, and Semantic Scholar for automated single-database searches in living guideline evidence surveillance: a case study of the international polycystic ovary syndrome guidelines 2023.

OBJECTIVES: Living guideline maintenance is underpinned by manual approaches toward evidence retrieval, limiting long-term sustainability. Our study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using only PubMed, Embase, OpenAlex, or Semantic Scholar in automatically retrieving articles that were included in a high-quality international guideline - the 2023 international polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) guidelines. METHODS: The digital object identifiers (DOIs) and PubMed ID (PMIDs) of articles included after full-text screening in the 2023 international PCOS guidelines were extracted. These IDs were

A protocol for neoWONDER: Neonatal whole population data linkage to improve long-term health and wellbeing of preterm and sick babies.

INTRODUCTION: Early-life medical and surgical interventions in babies born preterm and/or with surgical conditions influence later life health and educational outcomes. Obtaining long-term outcomes post-discharge to evaluate the impact of interventions is complex, expensive, and burdensome to families. Linkage of routinely collected data offers a feasible and cost-effective solution. The NeoWONDER research programme aims to describe the short and long-term health and educational outcomes for babies born preterm and/or with surgical conditions and evaluate the impact of neonatal care and interv

A self-supervised language model selection strategy for biomedical question answering.

Large neural-based Pre-trained Language Models (PLM) have recently gained much attention due to their noteworthy performance in many downstream Information Retrieval (IR) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. PLMs can be categorized as either general-purpose, which are trained on resources such as large-scale Web corpora, and domain-specific which are trained on in-domain or mixed-domain corpora. While domain-specific PLMs have shown promising performance on domain-specific tasks, they are significantly more computationally expensive compared to general-purpose PLMs as they have to be e

Identifying dementia using medical data linkage in a longitudinal cohort study: Lothian Birth Cohort 1936.

BACKGROUND: The Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 (LBC1936) is a longitudinal study of ageing with well-characterised assessments, but until now, it has relied on self-report or proxies for dementia such as cognitive tests. Our aims were twofold: a) to describe a framework for identifying dementia in a cohort study. b) to report the age-specific incidence and prevalence of all-cause dementia and dementia subtypes in 865 individuals in the LBC1936. METHODS: Electronic Health Records (EHR) of all participants were reviewed, and relevant information was extracted to form case vignettes for everyone with

Multi-scale and local feature guidance network for corneal nerve fiber segmentation.

Objective. Corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) is a rapid and non-invasive ophthalmic imaging technique that can reveal corneal nerve fiber. The automatic segmentation of corneal nerve fiber in CCM images is vital for the subsequent abnormality analysis, which is the main basis for the early diagnosis of degenerative neurological systemic diseases such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy.Approach. In this paper, a U-shape encoder-decoder structure based multi-scale and local feature guidance neural network (MLFGNet) is proposed for the automatic corneal nerve fiber segmentation in CCM images.
