Severe bradycardia and asystole in a dog after intravenous metoclopramide injection.

A 5-month-old English Bulldog with a history of clinically resolved bronchopneumonia was admitted for a computed tomography scan and corrective surgery for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. The day of imaging and surgery, the dog did not show any signs of cardiovascular abnormalities. The dog was premedicated intravenously (IV) with maropitant (1 mg kg-1), pantoprazole (1 mg kg-1) and acepromazine (20 μg kg-1). Anaesthesia was induced with alfaxalone (2 mg kg-1) IV after 5 minutes of preoxygenation, and anaesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in oxygen [inspired fraction (FIO2) =1

Intravenous ranitidine injection and risk of cardiac arrest: Medication errors.

BACKGROUND: Ranitidine injection is not well-known to cause cardiac arrest except in few published case reports. The Eritrean Pharmacovigilance Centre received four cases of cardiac arrest associated with ranitidine injection. OBJECTIVE: To assess the causal relationship between cardiac arrest and ranitidine, and to identify possible risk factors. METHODS: This is a descriptive case series assessment of cardiac arrest associated with ranitidine and data was mined to supplement the cases from the WHO global database of individual case safety reports. RESULTS: In all cases, ranitidine injecti

Intravenous Catheter Employed in Peritrochlear Injection of Triamcinolone in the Treatment of Trochleitis.

PURPOSE: Injection of corticosteroid into the peritrochlear region is a widely practiced and highly successful treatment option for trochleitis, conventionally using a 25- or 27-gauge needle for the steroid injection. Injection into the vascular-rich peritrochlear region poses a risk, albeit rare, of central retinal artery occlusion or orbital hemorrhage. We describe a potentially safer method of delivering triamcinolone to the peritrochlear region using a 24-gauge intravenous catheter. METHODS: Interventional retrospective case series including all patients who received peritrochlear injecti

Thrombotic microangiopathy associated with intravenous injection of extended-release oxycodone.

We describe the case of a 35-year-old man presenting with thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) and renal impairment following, as he later disclosed, intravenous injection of oral formulation tamper-resistant extended-release oxycodone hydrochloride (Oxycontin). Recurrent misuse of this agent was associated with relapsing TMA despite treatment with terminal complement inhibitor eculizumab. Cases of TMA have been reported in the USA in association with intravenous misuse of extended-release oxymorphone (Opana ER) after the introduction of a new non-crushable formulation in 2012. There are two repor

Elemental mercury mixed with alcohol injected intravenously as a suicide attempt.

A 22-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department with symptoms of chest discomfort after a suicide attempt by injecting intravenously the amount of mercury extracted from 3 thermometers mixed with alcohol. At presentation, the patient was well oriented with normal vital signs, but a few hours later she presented an abrupt deterioration of her mental status, with confusion, disorientation, tremor and finally stupor. She was transferred to the intensive care unit for monitoring and therapy. A nasogastric tube was immediately placed and the patient received treatment with a chelating

Intravenous furosemide injection during 18F-FDG PET acquisition.

UNLABELLED: Urinary-system elimination of (18)F-FDG can be mistaken for pathologic uptake. Furosemide helps eliminate this artifact. Unnecessary administration should be avoided. Our approach obviates furosemide administration and other invasive procedures in many cases. METHODS: Thirty-seven cancer patients referred for PET to evaluate treatment response or suspected recurrence were prospectively studied using whole-body scanning, with (18)F-FDG injected via dorsal hand catheter beforehand. The catheter was left in place to enable injection of furosemide while the patient was inside the scan

Relapse of panic disorder induced by a single intravenous methamphetamine injection.

The authors reports a case of a 33-year-old woman who had a relapse and worsening of panic disorder following a single injection of methamphetamine after a long period of remission. Her first panic attack had occurred when she was a 14-year-old high school student, but the course had persisted only for 1 month. Soon after an intravenous injection of methamphetamine, she had a relapse of panic disorder, and depression and agoraphobia developed. Psychotropic medication was not fully effective.

Nephrotoxicity of intravenously injected cadmium-metallothionein: critical concentration and tolerance.

The nephrotoxicity of Cd-metallothionein (Cd-MT) was examined after iv administration of various dosages to mice. The lowest dosage of Cd-MT that produced renal injury was 0.2 mg Cd/kg. This dosage of Cd-MT resulted in 10 micrograms Cd/g in the kidneys 24 hr after administration. A time-course experiment utilizing a higher (0.3 mg Cd/kg) nephrotoxic dose of Cd-MT demonstrated that the renal Cd concentration at 4 and 12 hr was much higher than the critical concentration, but thereafter decreased to about 10 micrograms Cd/g wet tissue by 24 hr. Thus, Cd in excess of 10 micrograms/g appears to da

Effect of intravenously injected collagenase on the concentration of circulating platelets in rats.

An enzymatically induced irritation of the vessel wall by intravenous injection of collagenase (1.5 U per kg body weight) into rats resulted in a transient decrease of the platelet concentration in the flowing blood. This may be caused by an occurrence of inter-endothelial gaps distributed throughout the total area of the circulatory system, as could be observed by electron-microscopic studies. Subendothelial structures, at the sites of those gaps, induce a formation of multilocal microthrombi of platelets. At some gaps within the endothelial layer a deposit of fibrin could also be observed hi

[Long-term observation of a case of intravenous injection of elemental mercury].

Elementary mercury is usually intravenously injected with suicidal intent. It is floated to the heart and lungs but is also deposited in the abdominal organs. Case histories presented in the literature so far have been followed up clinically and roentgenologically for up to three years. We report one patient attempting suicidal mercury injection, whom we were able to follow up for 10 years. It could be demonstrated that quite in contrast to former suggestions elementary mercury is dissolved and oxidised in the body. Chronic poisoning with mercury compounds causes continuing damage, particularl

Effects of naloxone and buprenorphine on intravenous acetaldehyde self-injection in rats.

Rats can be induced to self-inject acetaldehyde under an appropriate operant conditioning schedule. The narcotic antagonist naloxone (30 mg/kg) is shown to produce a decrease in schedule-induced acetaldehyde self-injection, but was without effect on both barpress responding and spontaneous activity in rats tested individually for fine, gross and total activity. On the other hand buprenorphine (0.3 and 3 mg/kg), the mixed agonist-antagonist derived from the opium alkaloid thebaine, also produced a significant decrease in acetaldehyde self-injection. However, a significant effect of buprenorphin

Vestibulo-ocular reflexes in rabbits: reduction by intravenous injection of diazepam.

We have studied the influence of intravenously administered diazepam on the horizontal (HVOR) and vertical (VVOR) vestibulo-ocular reflexes of the rabbit. The HVOR and VVOR were evoked by sinusoidal oscillation of rabbits on a rate table (0.01 to 0.8 Hz, +/- 10 degrees), and eye movements were measured with an infrared light-projection technique. The gains of the HVOR and VVOR (evoked eye velocity/head velocity) were reduced by diazepam injections of 5 microgram/kg. The dose required to produce a 50% reduction in HVOR gain was 500 microgram/kg. The time required to reduce the HVOR gain to 50%

Compatibility and stability of diazepam injection following dilution with intravenous fluids.

The compatibility and stability of diazepam injection were studied following dilution to 10 different concentrations in dextrose 5% in water, normal saline, Ringer's injection and lactated Ringer's injection. Prepared solutions were examined for clarity and pH throughout a 24-hour period. Clear solutions were filtered and then assayed 24 hours after preparation using UV spectrophotometry. Solutions which formed visible precipitates before 24 hours or which did not demonstrate acceptable potency (greater than or equal to 90%) were assayed after shorter time periods. Dilutions lower than 1:20 (5
