Freshwater biodiversity underpins ecosystem functioning and human well-being. As the most diverse taxonomic groups in freshwater ecosystems, benthic invertebrates are widely employed as bioindicators for aquatic monitoring and health assessment. In this study, environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding was used to reveal the diversity and spatiotemporal variations in benthic invertebrates in the Hun River Basin (the middle and upper reaches). Sampling was conducted in spring, summer, and autumn, with sites arranged to cover both anthropogenic activities and watershed environmental conditions. A to

Folsomia candida is a tiny soil-living arthropod belonging to the Collembola, which is an outgroup to Insecta. It resembles insects as having a pair of antennae and three pairs of thorax legs, while it also possesses three abdominal appendages: a ventral tube located in the first abdominal segment (A1), a retinaculum in A3, and a furca in A4. Collembolan Ubx and AbdA specify abdominal appendages, but they are unable to repress appendage marker gene Dll. The genetic basis of collembolan appendage formation and the mechanisms by which Ubx and AbdA regulate Dll transcription and appendage develop

We present a genome assembly from an individual male Xyphosia miliaria (tephritid fruit fly; Arthropoda; Insecta; Diptera; Tephritidae). The assembly contains two haplotypes with total lengths of 806.98 megabases and 799.90 megabases. Most of haplotype 1 (97.34%) is scaffolded into 7 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the X and Y sex chromosomes. Most of haplotype 2 (83.09%) is scaffolded into 5 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 19.41 kilobases. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life project, which produc

The generic name Polycarmes Stl, 1868, currently used as a valid name for two species of Pentatomidae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomomorpha: Pentatomoidea) from New Caledonia, is actually a junior homonym of Polycarmes Gistel, 1834 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). The substitute name for it is its only valid junior synonym, Acanthidiellum Kirkaldy, 1904, originally proposed as a new replacement name for Acanthidium Montrouzier, 1858 preoccupied by Acanthidium Lowe, 1839 (Chondrichthyes). The following two new combinations are proposed: Acanthidiellum armigerum (Montrouzier, 1858) comb.

The Rabs act as a binary molecular switch that utilizes the conformational changes associated with the GTP/GDP cycle to elicit responses from target proteins. It regulates a broad spectrum of cellular processes including cell proliferation, cytoskeletal assembly, and intracellular membrane trafficking in eukaryotes. The Rab8 from Clonorchis sinensis (CsRab8) was composed of 199 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence shared above 50% identities with other species from trematode, tapeworm, mammal, insecta, nematode, and reptile, respectively. The homologous analysis of sequences showed the

Organisms vary in their dispersal abilities, and these differences can have important biological consequences, such as impacting the likelihood of hybridization events. However, there is still much to learn about the factors influencing hybridization, and specifically how dispersal ability affects the opportunities for hybridization. Here, using the ecological replicate system of dove wing and body lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera), we show that species with higher dispersal abilities exhibited increased genomic signatures of introgression. Specifically, we found a higher proportion of introgressed

Water striders of the genus Limnogonus Stål, 1868 (Insecta: Hemiptera: Gerridae) occur in lentic and calmer lotic habitats across much of the tropics and into the subtropics. In the Americas, there is a long history of confusion over the identity and ranges of the species. Here, I present a review of the genus in North America including the Caribbean based on collection of new specimens from the United States and review of museum specimens. Limnogonusmacroconfusussp. nov. is distinguished based on external and internal morphological characteristics from L. franciscanus (Stål, 1859), which is r

The arthropod compound eye is one of the three main types of eyes observed in the animal kingdom. Comparison of the eyes seen in Insecta, Crustacea, Myriapoda and Chelicerata reveals considerable variation in terms of overall cell number, cell positioning, and photoreceptor rhabdomeres, yet, molecular data suggest there may be unexpected similarities. We review here the role of Pax6 in eye development and evolution and the relationship of Pax6 with other retinal determination genes and signaling pathways. We then discuss how the study of changes in Pax6 primary structure, in the gene networks

The ultrastructure of the mouthparts of Haematobia irritans (L.) was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The morphological characteristics of the maxillary palps, labium (prementum and postmentum), labrum, hypopharynx, haustellum, and labellar lobes are described, as well as of the sensilla evidenced on all the surface of the mouthparts, and the set of different positions assumed by the mouth apparatus of this fly. Based on their morphology, 12 well-differentiated sensilla were identified, among three types of cuticular sensilla: trichoidea, coeloconica, and campaniformia. A slight s

Cyanogenic glucosides are phytoanticipins known to be present in more than 2500 plant species. They are considered to have an important role in plant defense against herbivores due to bitter taste and release of toxic hydrogen cyanide upon tissue disruption. Some specialized herbivores, especially insects, preferentially feed on cyanogenic plants. Such herbivores have acquired the ability to metabolize cyanogenic glucosides or to sequester them for use in their predator defense. A few species of Arthropoda (within Diplopoda, Chilopoda, Insecta) are able to de novo synthesize cyanogenic glucosi

The segmental composition of the arthropodan head is a long-standing biological question. This is particularly controversial in insects where considerable fusion and modification obfuscate the postembryonic segmentation. Here we propose a reinterpretation of the insect head morphology and segmentation, which also accords with current genetic and embryological data. The new interpretation of a generalized insect head is based on the discovery of intercalary segment remnants (the intercalates), thanks to the use of 3D-reconstruction of a Cretaceous thripidan and to a reassessment of the 'anterio

A phylogeny for the lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera: genus Dennyus) parasitic on swiftlets (Aves: Collocalliinae) was constructed based on mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences. This phylogeny is congruent with previous phenetic analyses of morphometric data for the lice. Comparison with a previously obtained phylogeny for the hosts indicates some degree of cospeciation. These cospeciation events are used to compare relative rates of evolution in the birds and their lice for the same segment of the cytochrome b gene. Cytochrome b is evolving two to three times more rapidly in lice than in birds

Myiasis is the infestation of human tissues by dipterous fly larvae of the class Insecta. Clogmia albipunctatus, family Psychodidae, is one of the most medically important insects that cause human myiasis. The aim of the present study is the morphological identification and the molecular characterization of moth flies causing many cases of urinary myiasis in Egypt, based on sequencing of the mitochondrial DNA of the larvae. Seven urinary samples of patients complaining of urinary symptoms and giving a history of low socioeconomic level were examined. Recovered larvae were identified using ligh

Social bees and other insects are frequently parasitized by a large range of different microorganisms. Among these is Crithidia bombi (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), a common gut parasite of bumblebees, Bombus spp. (Insecta: Apidae). Bumblebees are important pollinators in commercial and natural environments. There are clear detrimental effects of C. bombi infections on the fitness of bumblebees. However, little has been known about how the bee's immune system responds to infections with trypanosome parasites. Here, we study the immune response of Bombus terrestris on infection by C. bombi

Dhurrin, a cyanogenic glucoside, is a plant defensive chemical synthesized from aliphatic amino acids and consists of β-d-glucopyranose linked to α-hydroxy nitrile. It is catabolized by the consecutive action of hydroxynitrilase and β-glucosidase to release hydrogen cyanide on tissue disruption during herbivory. These phytoanticipins are widely distributed across various monocot and dicot plants such as Sorghum, Macadamia, Ostrya sp., and many other plant species with ornamental, pharmaceutical, medicinal, and food value. Although repellent properties of dhurrin against herbivores are often re

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus (SFTSV) is a highly pathogenic tick-borne virus that causes hemorrhagic fever in humans, with a mortality rate of up to 30 %. SFTSV has been primarily detected in arachnid vectors, particularly Haemaphysalis longicornis. While the majority of human SFTSV infections are linked to tick exposure, a significant proportion of cases have no reported history of tick bites, suggesting the existence of alternative vectors. Here, we report the first detection of SFTSV RNA in deer ked (Lipoptena fortisetosa, family Hippoboscidae) using reverse transcripti
