Force-moment mechanics of wiggling in connector insertion.

Humans instinctively use both pushing and wiggling motions when inserting objects into sockets, connectors, or mechanical interfaces that resist fitting, often without understanding the rationale behind these actions. Despite their apparent simplicity, such tasks involve complex mechanical interactions that are challenging to describe mathematically. In this paper, we present a simplified two-leg mathematical model that clarifies the fundamental principles governing the combined pushing-wiggling during assembly. The model integrates forces, moments, frictional reactions, and other uncertain ef

The flexible, the stereotyped and the in-between: putting together the combinatory tool use origins hypothesis.

Tool use research has long made the distinction between tool using that is considered learned and flexible, and that which appears to be instinctive and stereotyped. However, animals with an inherited tool use specialisation can exhibit flexibility, while tool use that is spontaneously innovated can be limited in its expression and facilitated by predispositions for ecological specialisations. Furthermore, recent evidence does not support the proposed division of flexible tool use along primate-bird taxonomic lines. Instead, we hypothesise that tool use is a more complementary phenomenon than

Postpartum Preeclampsia: What Can Stories Posted on the Internet Tell Us?

Postpartum preeclampsia has not received the needed attention that preeclampsia has. It is the lesser-known hypertensive disorder but can be just as life-threatening as eclampsia. Because of the scarcity of qualitative research on postpartum preeclampsia, the purpose of this study was to help fill this gap by exploring personal experiences of this dangerous complication as described in online blogs. Using Google search engine, 25 stories of postpartum preeclampsia were located. Krippendorff's content analysis for qualitative data was the research design used. Five themes were identified: (1) N

[Biologic stress: possible role in the pathogenesis of depression].

This paper presents a review of biologic mechanisms of stress and analyzes their role in the pathogenesis of depressive disorder. Recent investigations point to the fact that apart from hereditary predisposition in the pathogenesis of depression different biologic mechanisms, included into the regulation of organism response to stress, have an important role. These findings are in harmony with the well known fact from the clinical practice, that exposure to stressor may lead to depression in persons who do not normally react depressively. The newest findings point out the significance of biolo

Artificial hibernation/life-protective state induced by thiazoline-related innate fear odors.

Innate fear intimately connects to the life preservation in crises, although this relationships is not fully understood. Here, we report that presentation of a supernormal innate fear inducer 2-methyl-2-thiazoline (2MT), but not learned fear stimuli, induced robust systemic hypothermia/hypometabolism and suppressed aerobic metabolism via phosphorylation of pyruvate dehydrogenase, thereby enabling long-term survival in a lethal hypoxic environment. These responses exerted potent therapeutic effects in cutaneous and cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury models. In contrast to hibernation, 2MT sti

Genetic Architecture of Innate Fear Behavior in Chickens.

The genetic architecture of innate fear behavior in chickens is poorly understood. Here, we performed quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis of innate responses to tonic immobility (TI) and open field (OF) fears in 242 newly hatched chicks of an F2 population between the native Japanese Nagoya breed and the White Leghorn breed using 881 single nucleotide polymorphism markers obtained by restriction site-associated DNA sequencing. At genome-wide 5% significance levels, four QTL for TI traits were revealed on chromosomes 1-3 and 24. Two of these loci had sex-specific effects on the traits. For O

Excitatory actions of propofol and ketamine in the snail Lymnaea stagnalis.

This study compares the actions of the intravenous anaesthetics propofol and ketamine on animal behaviour and neuronal activity in the snail Lymnaea stagnalis, particularly in relation to excitatory effects observed clinically. When injected into the whole animal, neither agent induced total anaesthesia. Rather, behavioural activity was enhanced by propofol (10(-5) M) and ketamine (10(-7) M), indicating excitatory effects. When superfused over the isolated central nervous system (CNS), differential effects were produced in two identified neurons, right pedal dorsal 1 (RPeD1) and visceral dorsa

Experiences and needs of Saudi mothers when a child or adolescent is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus: a qualitative study.

AIM: To explore the experiences of Saudi mothers with children or adolescents who have Type 1 diabetes mellitus at time of diagnosis. BACKGROUND: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has one of the highest incidence rates of Type 1 diabetes mellitus in children and adolescents in the world. Few studies have considered the most appropriate methods of support for parents in the KSA and none report the experiences of Saudi mothers. DESIGN: Phenomenological inquiry. METHOD: Qualitative interviews were conducted with 11 Saudi mothers and data were analysed following Giorgi's 5-step method. RESULTS

The Self and alien self in psyche and soma.

This paper compares presentations of disorders of the sense of body ownership and agency from psychoanalytic and neurological perspectives to demonstrate similarities in symptomatology proposing these similarities arise from adjustments in Friston's generative model of self-organization and selfhood. The implications for the analytic model of the Self, for clinical practice and for neuroscience research are considered. Patients with narcissistic disorders use projective defences resulting in a disordered sense of what belongs to whom. This applies to mind and body of self and other and is cent

Treatment of Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections: IVIG.

Immunoglobulins are key effector molecules in the humoral immune response. Intravenous polyspecific immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a preparation of polyclonal serum immunoglobulins, typically IgG, from thousands of donors. It has been used as adjunctive therapy in critically ill patients with severe infections, i.e. sepsis, septic shock, and necrotizing soft tissue infections. IVIG has been used for patients with severe invasive group A streptococcal infection since the early nineties and off-label use of IVIG for necrotizing soft tissue infections is common. It is also used for a variety of autoimm

Anterior cervical microforaminotomy for persistent brachialgia in a patient with multilevel cervical spondylosis; comparing PROMIS with Nurick score for outcome of surgery.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The primal instinct of neurosurgeons has been to maintain spinal stability and motion since the beginning of spinal procedures. Conventional anterior approaches without fusion eliminate motion in time as fusion invariably sets in and hampers the vertebral column's normal dynamic physiology. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a 60 years old male patient who presented with signs of myelopathy, but his primary complaint was brachialgia. He had myelopathic features for eight years, for which he offered fusion surgery at multiple levels years ago, and he denied it. He was

Fluorometric method for the determination of hydrogen peroxide and glucose with Fe3O4 as catalyst.

In this paper, we utilized the instinct peroxidase-like property of Fe(3)O(4) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to establish a new fluorometric method for determination of hydrogen peroxide and glucose. In the presence of Fe(3)O(4) MNPs as peroxidase mimetic catalyst, H(2)O(2) was decomposed into radical that could quench the fluorescence of CdTe QDs more efficiently and rapidly. Then the oxidization of glucose by glucose oxidase was coupled with the fluorescence quenching of CdTe QDs by H(2)O(2) producer with Fe(3)O(4) MNPs catalyst, which can be used to detect glucose. Under the optimal reaction

Breastfeeding: factors associated with the continuation of breastfeeding, the current situation in Japan, and recommendations for further research.

There are a number of research reports that address the various advantages that breastfeeding brings to mothers and children, as well as to families and society, and in addition to a number of physically positive effects, breastfeeding has an important role in terms of mental and psychological effects.Ninety-five % of mothers desire to breastfeed, which reflects social acceptance, but the actual breastfeeding rate of the first month after childbirth is 42%, which accounts for about a half of all mothers. Breastfeeding is a natural behavior, but it cannot be performed only by instinct, so mothe

A modified tail suspension test for the assessment of behavioral despair in mice after stroke.

Stroke survivors usually suffer from mood and emotional disturbances, especially depression. However, research on poststroke depression (PSD) is limited by the measurement of behavioral despair in animals. The tail suspension test (TST) is a classic method for assessing behavioral despair in mice based on an increased immobility time. Ischemic mice assessed using the classic TST instinctively struggled because of incoordination, which influenced the immobility time and caused misleading results. In this study, we modified the classic TST equipment by introducing a smooth and transparent plate

A Review of Current Literature on Central Retinal Artery Occlusion: Its Pathogenesis, Clinical Management, and Treatment.

The ocular analogue of a cerebral stroke is central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), a medical emergency concerning the eyes. Most patients experience substantial acute vision loss with a visual acuity of 20/400 or worse, resulting in decreased quality of life (QoL) and decreased functional ability. An impending cerebral stroke and ischemic heart disease are also more likely. The four distinct clinical entities that make up CRAO are non-arteritic CRAO, transitory non-arteritic CRAO, non-arteritic CRAO with cilioretinal artery sparing, and arteritic CRAO. Depending on the CRAO type, clinical tr

Taking a PAWS to Reflect on How the Work of a Therapy Dog Supports a Trauma-Informed Approach to Prisoner Health.

Canada's Correctional Investigator has found that mental health disorders, alone or in combination with alcohol and drug abuse, challenge public health and safety. Trauma is a key contributor among Canada's inmate population. Therapy dogs can assist in supporting individuals with mental health, addiction, and trauma concerns. This case report presents the work of a St. John Ambulance therapy dog in a trauma-informed approach to prisoner health. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration articulates six evidence-based trauma principles for service providers; safety; trustwort

[The significance of stress: its role in the auditory system and the pathogenesis of tinnitus].

Emotional stress is often associated with auditory phenomena such as hyperacusis, tinnitus, Ménière's disease and vertigo. Stress develops as a result of a person's attempts to come to terms with the increased or unexpected demands of his or her environment. Stress serves to protect one from physical danger and to temporarily increase one's performance in order to increase the probability of survival. Sleep and appetite are particularly reduced, while anxiety increases. The mental changes induced by stress may contribute to the onset or exacerbation of tinnitus. The following links exist betwe

Breaking the silence of African American women: healing after pregnancy loss.

African American women experience pregnancy and infant losses at rates twice those of European American women and women of other recognized ethnic and racial groups. Health professionals, families, and friends tend to avoid discussions of these losses because grief following pregnancy or infant loss is frequently considered insignificant. Bereaved mothers whose grief is unrecognized are likely to have grief responses that are exaggerated in intensity and duration. In this article I reflect part of a larger qualitative study in which I explored the pregnancy-related experiences of 10 African Am

The nature of interpersonal violence in Jamaica and its strain on the national health system.

A random prospective study of 640 victims (76.6% in the 15-39-year-old age group) of interpersonal violence (IPV) at the Kingston Public Hospital was conducted over three months. About 87.5% of the aggression on males and 74.5% on females was committed by males. However, there was more female/female than female/male violence. Weapons used ranged from guns to a variety of cooking wares, though knives were used most frequently (34.8%) for stabbing 48% of the victims. Head, neck and upper limb were the main sites of injury; only 13.4% of all the injured had complications, and 63% of these require

Effects of Size, Body Mass and Body Condition on Tonic Immobility Occurrence in Lissotriton vulgaris.

Tonic immobility is a state of natural paralysis that species across the animal kingdom exhibit as an instinctive response to an external threat. In ectotherms, it has been linked with temperature, but the effects of individual size, body mass and body condition are still poorly understood. We hypothesize that under natural conditions, size, body mass and body condition play an important role in tonic immobility occurrence in smaller ectothermic animals such as the Smooth newt. In this study, we photographed, measured and weighed 357 adult Lissotriton vulgaris from four populations across Bulg
