Dyslexia in the workplace: Implications of the Americans with disabilities act.

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) insures greater accessibility of disabled persons to the workplace. This includes persons with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. The ADA requires reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities, yet it is different in its mandates from many other federal laws addressing disability-related issues. This article reviews some of the critical provisions of the ADA as it applies to persons with dyslexia, outlines a procedure through which the employer and employee negotiate accommodations, and offers examples of typical workplace probl

Health Care and Mortality among Persons with Severe Mental Illness.

OBJECTIVE: Reports show disparities in the health care of persons with severe mental illness (SMI), including in countries with universal health insurance. However, the moderating effect on disparities of specific mental health legislation is yet to be studied. The study aimed to investigate equality of health care for people with SMI in a country with a national health insurance and a comprehensive rehabilitation law for persons with mental disabilities. METHOD: A case-control epidemiological study compared health services (laboratory tests, visits to specialists, and medications) provided t

Prevalence, incidence and risk factors of visual disability in patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration: a nationwide population-based study in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible visual loss in the elderly. Although anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy has improved the visual prognosis of exudative AMD, a considerable proportion of patients still develop severe vision loss. However, real-world data on the prevalence, incidence and risk factors for visual disability among patients with exudative AMD remain limited. This study investigates the prevalence, incidence and risk factors for visual disability among patients with exudative AMD. METHODS: This nationwide, popu

'Hearts' and 'minds': Illustrating identity tensions of people living and working through marketising policy change of allied health disability services in Australia.

Service-based caring sectors like disability are increasingly being operated via market logic, including shifts towards personalised funding. These shifts must be brought to life in/through people already located in relation to ideas and values that underpin historical policies. Our manuscript examines how identities are re/shaped in relation to marketised policy change and explores how identity change unfolds (or not) during periods of transition: situated within the transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme executed in Australia as a major disability funding reform. Our qualitat

Displaced concern: the social context of the work-disability problem.

The Social Security disability insurance program benefits were reduced in the early 1980s, in the belief that income supports induced people to stop working. The action failed to stem the number of program participants from rising, as older men with activity limitations due to chronic disease continued to withdraw from the labor force. Attention paid in this and other instances to work disability derives from the problem's social context, displacing concerns about work loss itself and its effects on workers' lives. While slow growth in the economy as a whole may be a root cause of the problem,

Predictors of sickness absence in college and university educated self-employed: a historic register study.

BACKGROUND: Despite a large proportion of the workforce being self-employed, few studies have been conducted on risk factors for sickness absence in this population. The aim of this study is to identify risk factors for future sickness absence in a population of college and university educated self-employed. METHODS: In a historic register study based on insurance company files risk factors were identified by means of logistic regression analysis. Data collected at application for private disability insurance from 634 applicants were related to subsequent sickness absence periods of 30 days o

Dilemmas of anonymous predictive testing for Huntington disease: privacy vs. optimal care.

Some persons at risk for Huntington disease (HD) seek predictive testing under the protection of anonymity to reduce the risk of insurance discrimination for themselves and their families. While Canadian and European health care systems seem to limit insurance discrimination to life and disability insurance, U.S. residents do not have national health insurance and are concerned about health insurance discrimination. Two persons residing outside Canada requested predictive testing anonymously. Their primary reason for doing so was to avoid the risks of medical insurance discrimination. After a

Pain catastrophizing, kinesiophobia and fear-avoidance in non-specific work-related low-back pain as predictors of sickness absence.

The influence of pain catastrophizing, kinesiophobia and fear-avoidance attitudes towards non-specific low-back pain has been scarcely studied in an occupational insurance provider context. The objective of this work is to ascertain the relationship between these psychosocial variables with work absence, its duration and the disability of subjects with work-related low back pain. This is a descriptive observational methodological strategy. All patients with work-related non-specific low back pain who attended to an occupational health hospital during the study period were included consecutivel

Estimated economic costs of obesity to U.S. business.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the economic costs of obesity to U.S. business. METHODS: Standard epidemiologic methods for risk attribution and techniques for ascertaining cost of illness were used to estimate obesity-attributable expenditures on selected employee benefits, including health, life, and disability insurance and paid sick leave by private-sector firms in the U.S. in 1994. Data were obtained from a variety of secondary sources, including the National Health Interview Survey, reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other federal agencies, and the published literature. What Are the Determinants of the Sex/Gender Difference in Duration of Work Absence for Musculoskeletal Disorders? A Mixed-Studies Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) contribute to work disability arising from personal and work-related physical, organizational and psychosocial factors that often differentially affect men and women. We aimed to identify determinants of the sex/gender difference in duration of MSD work absence through a mixed-studies systematic review. Methods: We synthesized evidence using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach adapted to prognostic studies and meta-ethnography for qualitative studies, followed by a mixed synthesis. Health promotion challenges for young adults living with intellectual disability and type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Self-management of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) can be challenging for people with intellectual disability. Often, parents provide health support due to lack of appropriate services outside the home. The study aim was to identify barriers and facilitators to T1DM self-management for young adults with intellectual disability and the implications for health promotion. METHODS: Five male participants with intellectual disability, aged 17-26 years, and seven parents were interviewed between October 2017 and February 2019. Interview data were descriptively analysed. FINDINGS: Two c

Regional trends in awards of incapacity benefit by cause.

BACKGROUND: Since the early 1990s, rates of incapacity benefit (IB) in Britain for musculoskeletal complaints have declined, and they have been overtaken by mental and behavioural disorders as the main reason for award of IB. AIMS: To explore reasons for this change. METHODS: Using data supplied by the Department for Work and Pensions, we analysed trends in the ratio of new IB awards for mental and behavioural disorders to those for musculoskeletal disorders during 1997-2007 by Government region. RESULTS: In Great Britain overall, the above ratio more than doubled over the study period, as

Protecting workers with cancer in low- and middle-income countries: Policy lessons with global relevance.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Jordan, often affecting people in their prime working years. The ability to remain employed during or after treatment is essential for financial stability, access to care, and well-being. Yet, legal protections for workers with cancer remain limited. This narrative review examines whether Jordanian labor and social protection laws safeguard the right of patients with cancer to work. It compares Jordan's legal framework with international policies from countries across income levels and provides policy recommendations based on

Medical-legal issues regarding patients with low back pain.

Low back pain can present legal issues that require input from the patient's treating physicians. Because low back pain can lead to partial or complete disability, either on a short-term or long-term basis, patients may be unable to earn a living, which may make it necessary for patients to seek government aid, personal insurance benefits, or insurance benefits through workers compensation or even, when the low back pain was caused by an incident that was the fault of a third party, through a personal injury claim lawsuit. This article reviews the legal issues relevant to low back pain.
