The intelligent oxygen management system is a software designed with various algorithms to automatically titrate inhaled oxygen concentration according to specific patterns. This system can be integrated into various ventilator devices and used during assisted ventilation processes, aiming to maintain the patient's blood oxygen saturation within a target range. This paper employs a scoping review methodology, focusing on research related to intelligent oxygen management systems in neonatal intensive care units. It reviews the fundamental principles, application platforms, and clinical outcomes

The expression "developmental hemostasis" indicates the age-related physiological changes occurring during the maturational process of the hemostatic system. Despite the quantitative and qualitative alterations, the neonatal hemostatic system is competent and well-balanced. Conventional coagulation tests do not provide reliable information as they only explore the procoagulants during the neonatal period. In contrast, viscoelastic coagulation tests (VCTs), such as viscoelastic coagulation monitoring (VCM), thromboelastography (TEG or ClotPro), and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), are poi

PURPOSE: Learning to navigate difficult clinical conversations is an essential feature of residency training, yet much of this learning occurs "on the job," often without the formative, multisource feedback trainees need. To generate insight into how on-the-job training influences trainee performance, the perspectives of parents and health care providers (HCPs) who engaged in or observed difficult conversations with Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) trainees were explored.
METHOD: The iterative data generation and analysis process was informed by constructivist grounded theory. Parents (n =

Very low birth weight (VLBW; <1500 g birth weight) infants are substantially more likely to be born to black than to non-black mothers, predisposing them to potentially preventable morbidities that increase the risk for costly lifelong health problems. Mothers' own milk (MOM) may be considered the ultimate "personalized medicine" since milk composition and bioactive components vary among mothers and multiple milk constituents provide specific protection based on shared exposures between mother and infant. MOM feedings reduce the risks and associated costs of prematurity-associated morbidities,

OBJECTIVE: A predischarge car seat tolerance screen (CSTS) is currently recommended for all infants born prematurely in the United States to monitor for adverse cardiorespiratory events while in the semi-upright car seat. However, specific guidelines for failure criteria, timing of testing, and follow-up of failed CSTS do not exist. Our objective was to perform a national survey of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in order to identify common features and variation in CSTS protocols.
METHODS: We surveyed Level II-IV NICUs representing all 50 states to determine whether each performed CSTS

OBJECTIVES: Investigate characteristics of term infants culture-evaluated for early-onset sepsis (EOS) in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), frequencies of organisms causing EOS, and factors associated with EOS.
STUDY DESIGN: Using a cohort design, we identified term infants evaluated for EOS with blood, cerebrospinal fluid, or urine cultures in 326 NICUs (2011-2016). Using multivariable logistic regression, we investigated the association between EOS and demographic characteristics.
RESULTS: Of 142,410 infants, 1197 (0.8%) had EOS, most commonly caused by group B Streptococcus (GBS; 40.

AIM: In 2004, wide variation in the investigation and management of gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) of infants on UK major neonatal units was demonstrated. Our aim was to resurvey neonatal practitioners to determine current practice and whether it was now evidence based.
METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to all 207 UK neonatal units.
RESULTS: Responses were obtained from 84% of units. The most frequent 'investigation' was a trial of therapy (83% of units); pH studies were used in 38%, upper GI contrast studies in 19% and multichannel intraluminal impedance (MII)/pH studies in 5%. Only six un

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to determine whether irradiance levels of phototherapy (PT) devices in Dutch neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) increased between 2008 and 2013.
STUDY DESIGN: Irradiance of all types of PT devices, used in combination with incubators, was measured with a Dale 40 Radiometer (Fluke Biomedical, Everett, WA, USA) in all 10 Dutch NICUs.
RESULTS: Irradiance increased in seven NICUs. Median (range) irradiance increased from 9.7 (4.3-32.6) to 16.4 (6.8-41) μW cm-2 nm-1 for 24 overhead devices (P=0.004) and from 6.8 (0.8-15.6) to 22.3 (1.1-36.3) μW cm-2 nm

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks on neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) achieve huge media interest, but the real number of neonatal outbreaks within a country is unknown.
METHOD: This calculation is based on the data of the component for nosocomial infections in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants of the German national nosocomial infection surveillance system (NEO-KISS) from 2006 to 2011. Almost all German NICUs caring for VLBW infants participated in this surveillance system. A cluster was defined and an outbreak was assumed when at least two cases of severe neonatal infection (bloodstream infecti

OBJECTIVE: To examine the short-term morbidities, mortality, and use of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) resources for late preterm, early term, and term infants.
STUDY DESIGN: Infants born between 34 and 40 weeks of gestation and admitted to a Canadian NICU in 2010 were designated late preterm (340/7 to 366/7 weeks), early term (370/7 to 386/7 weeks), or term (390/7 to 406/7 weeks). Mortality, short-term morbidities, and resource utilization were compared between the three groups using chi-square tests and analysis of variance.
RESULTS: Among 6,636 included infants, 44.2% (n = 2,935) wer

BACKGROUND: Concurrent admission of a mother and her newborn to separate intensive care units (herein referred to as co-ICU admission), possibly in different centres, can magnify family discord and stress. We examined the prevalence and predictors of mother-infant separation and mortality associated with co-ICU admissions.
METHODS: We completed a population-based study of all 1 023 978 singleton live births in Ontario between Apr. 1, 2002, and Mar. 31, 2010. We included data for maternal-infant pairs that had co-ICU admission (n = 1216), maternal ICU admission only (n = 897), neonatal ICU (NI

AIM: Although the effect of adolescent pregnancy on perinatal mortality and morbidity is known, data on the neonatal hospitalization rate in these deliveries have not been reported. We aimed to assess the possible effects of adolescent pregnancies on the hospital outcomes of the newborns.
METHODS: Three hundred adolescent mothers under 17 years of age and their singleton newborns were enrolled in this retrospective study. The major outcomes of the study were the rates of prematurity and intrauterine growth retardation, and the admission rate of newborns to the neonatal intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: The growing burden of neonatal mortality associated with hospital-acquired neonatal sepsis in the developing world creates an urgent need for cost-effective infection-control measures in resource-limited settings.
METHODS: Using a before-and-after comparison design, we measured how rates of staff hand-hygiene compliance, colonization with drug-resistant pathogens (defined as ceftazidime- and/or gentamicin-resistant gram-negative bacilli and drug-resistant gram-positive cocci), bacteremia, and overall mortality changed after the introduction of a simplified package of infection-con

The higher survival rate of very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants is associated with an increasing rehospitalization load, especially during the first year after discharge from neonatal intensive care units. This was evaluated in a sample of 86 VLBW infants born during 1989-1990, compared with 120 normal term newborns delivered during 1990. 34 (39.5%) VLBW infants were rehospitalized, compared with 16 (13.3%) term newborns (2.9:1; p < 0.001). The ratio of hospitalizations between the groups was even higher, 4:1. Of the 49 VLBW infants hospitalized, 25 had respiratory complications (in 15 bronch

BACKGROUND: Parents of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients become parents in a stressful, unexpected environment. These parents are at risk of impaired bonding with their infants and may experience worse mental health outcomes compared with parents of infants born healthy. A better understanding of how parents develop their identity as a parent in the NICU may facilitate improved parent support.
METHODS: This qualitative study analyzed semistructured interviews with parents of NICU patients to explore parental identity development in the NICU. We applied phenomenological and narrativ
