The intergenerational effects of Indian Residential Schools: implications for the concept of historical trauma.

The current paper reviews research that has explored the intergenerational effects of the Indian Residential School (IRS) system in Canada, in which Aboriginal children were forced to live at schools where various forms of neglect and abuse were common. Intergenerational IRS trauma continues to undermine the well-being of today's Aboriginal population, and having a familial history of IRS attendance has also been linked with more frequent contemporary stressor experiences and relatively greater effects of stressors on well-being. It is also suggested that familial IRS attendance across several

More Than Health: Long-Term Care Insurance Reshaping Family Support in Aging China.

China's rapidly aging population has strained traditional family-based elder care, leading to the introduction of Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) as a government-supported solution. Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and employing Difference-in-Differences (DID) and Triple-Difference (DDD) methodologies, this study explores LTCI's impact on intergenerational financial transfers within households. The findings demonstrate that LTCI significantly increases financial support from elderly parents to adult children by reducing elder care-related economic bur

Breaking the cycle: A systematic review of intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment and preventive parenting interventions.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a major global public health concern with well-documented intergenerational patterns. Parents with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are at increased risk of perpetuating harmful parenting practices. However, evidence suggests that targeted parenting interventions can disrupt this cycle, particularly when grounded in trauma-informed care. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and synthesize empirical evidence on the effectiveness of parenting interventions aimed at preventing the intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment among caregivers with hist

"Subtleties of damage": Montréal, medicine, and migration in the making of intergenerational trauma.

In mid-1960s Montréal, a team of psychiatrists affiliated with the city's Jewish General Hospital identified a disturbing trend in their family therapy practice. The children of concentration camp survivors exhibited forms of severe maladjustment and psychopathology despite their parents' seeming good mental health. These clinical cases examined through a cybernetic-informed family therapy suggested to the psychiatrists that certain forms of trauma could be transmitted across the generations to those who had not experienced the camps firsthand. When daily newspapers publicized this theory in 1

The Intergenerational Transmission of Health Disadvantage: Can Education Disrupt It?

In low-income countries, intergenerational processes can culminate in the replication of extreme forms of health disadvantage between mothers and adult daughters, including experiencing a young child's death. The preventable nature of most child deaths raises questions of whether social resources can protect women from enduring this adversity like their mothers. This study examined whether education-widely touted as a vehicle for social mobility in resource-poor countries-disrupts the intergenerational cycle of maternal bereavement. We estimated multilevel discrete-time survival models of wome

Collisions and Perceptions of Cyberbullying: Comparison of Intergenerational Experiences.

With regard to negative consequences, cyberbullying is recognized as one of the most traumatic types of cyber aggression. The aim is to study the specific features of adolescents and youth's cyberbullying experience in the role of an aggressor, victim or bystander, as well as awareness on the part of parents of adolescents. A total of 3395 adolescents, youth and parents filled out specially designed questionnaires. Older adolescents turned out to be at higher risk of cyberbullying. In two-thirds of cases, cyberbullying is related to real-life incidents. Aggressors are motivated by domination a

Differential Association of Spirituality and Religiosity With Rumination: Implications for the Treatment of Depression.

Recent studies have shown that religiosity (R) is associated with lower rates of depression, whereas spirituality (S) is associated with higher rates. Rumination has also been associated with higher rates of depression. Some have hypothesized that rumination mediates the differential association of religiosity and spirituality with depression. We empirically test this hypothesis in a longitudinal, multigenerational sample through associations between rumination and depression, R/S and depression, and R/S and rumination. Cross-sectionally, total rumination scores were predicted by spirituality

Does Parents' Union Instability Disrupt Intergenerational Advantage? An Analysis of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The long arm of childhood, with its wide-ranging influence on individuals' life chances, highlights the importance of understanding the determinants of health in early life. Research has established that parents' education is a major determinant of childhood health, but children across the globe increasingly experience their parents' divorce and subsequent remarriage, raising questions of whether union instability alters these intergenerational processes. Does divorce and remarriage interfere with parents' education benefiting their young children's health? I explore this question in sub-Sahar

Communication neglect, caregiver anger and hostility, and perceptions of older care receivers' cognitive status and problem behaviors in explaining elder abuse.

The goal of the current study was to examine the roles of communication neglect and caregiver traits (i.e., anger and hostility) in explaining caregivers' tendency to engage in abusive behaviors - specifically, whether such tendency is likely to occur in situations where caregivers perceive older care receivers displaying cognitive impairment or problem behaviors. Two hundred fifty-five informal caregivers completed an online questionnaire via Qualtrics. Treating communication neglect as the mediator, and caregiver anger and hostility as moderators, the results suggested that caregivers who pe

The intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment: A three-level meta-analysis.

A parental history of experiencing child maltreatment is an important risk factor in several etiological theories of child maltreatment. In the past, two reviews have been conducted on the available evidence for intergenerational continuity in child maltreatment, but were only qualitative in nature. Therefore, the present review aimed to provide a quantitative summary of the current knowledge on intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment. In our 3-level random-effects meta-analysis, we included 84 studies reporting on 285 effect sizes and found a medium summary effect of r = 0.289; 9

Negotiations of Blame and Care among HIV-positive Mothers and Daughters in South Africa's Eastern Cape.

Research delineates two epidemiological categories among HIV-positive adolescents: those who contract the virus sexually and those who inherit it as infants. In this article, we are interested in how tacit inferences about adolescents' mode of infection contribute to their experiences of HIV-related blame, and their ability to achieve care, in their intimate, everyday settings. The analysis arises from ethnographic research with 23 HIV-positive adolescents living in South Africa's Eastern Cape. From these, we draw particularly on the narratives of four HIV-positive teenage girls and their HIV-

Cherubism: a case report of a three-generation inheritance and literature review.

Cherubism is a rare, non-neoplastic pathologic entity first described by Jones in 1933. It affects mostly younger individuals and is usually inherited. Cherubism presents as a painless jaw enlargement that affects both the maxilla and the mandible and is characterized by replacement of the osseous tissue by fibrous connective tissue. Radiologically, the lesions appear as multiple, multilocular radiolucent spaces with distinct borders divided by bony septations, which often dramatically alter the shape and size of the jaw structures. These often result in marked facial abnormalities. Cervical l

[An intergenerational health promotion program involving older adults in urban areas. "Research of Productivity by Intergenerational Sympathy (REPRINTS)": first-year experience and short-term effects].

OBJECTIVE: We have launched a new intervention study, called "Research of Productivity by Intergenerational Sympathy (REPRINTS)" in which senior volunteers engage in reading picture books to children. The "REPRINTS" program consistently involves social roles and intellectual activity, two higher-level functional capacities. This study reported findings and problems experienced through "REPRINTS" during the first year, ascertained potential effectiveness of social activity, and proposed methods for continued activity. METHODS: Basic concepts of "REPRINTS"program include "contribution to societ

Using an oral history approach to understand perspectives of intergenerational trauma in African American women.

This brief report explores how African American women describe the intergenerational transmission of trauma and its perceived influence on stress and cardiometabolic health. Using an Oral History approach, semi-structured interviews were analyzed from participants in the parent HARMONY study. Analytic themes spanned work-life imbalance, medical racism, hypervigilance, reproductive autonomy, and physical safety. Women described balancing "controlled emotions" and "controlled actions" to navigate relationships and maintain bodily control. Although findings are preliminary and non-generalizable,

How Intergenerational Injustice Impacts Young People's Mental Health: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging adulthood is a significant period of developmental transition, and recent increases have been observed in mental health diagnoses and service use among people at this stage of life. Coinciding with these increases is a perceived decrease in young people's quality of life across advanced economies such as the UK, on account of rising economic, social and political precarity. The disparity between the relative stability experienced by previous generations and the instability with which younger generations contend is known in policy spaces as 'intergenerational injustice'.

Bidirectional Associations Between Primary Caregivers' and Adolescents' Depressive and Anxiety Symptoms: An Intergenerational Actor-Partner Interdependence Model Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Extensive research has focused on the top-down intergenerational transmission of psychopathological symptoms (ITP). However, little is known about the bidirectional and transactional dynamics of ITP between primary caregivers and their adolescent offspring in community-based samples. In particular, the moderating roles of caregiver and adolescent gender in these intergenerational associations remain underexplored. METHODS: Between 2021 and 2022, a total of 1414 primary caregiver-adolescent dyads completed two waves of surveys assessing sociodemographic characteristics, as well as

Commemorative Naming, Intergenerational Legacy, and Continuing Bonds: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study of Being a Living Commemoration.

Commemorative naming-naming a child after a deceased family member-is a culturally rooted practice with profound emotional and relational implications. Although previous research has explored naming traditions from sociological and cultural angles, little attention has been given to the psychological experience of those who carry such names. This qualitative study examined the lived experiences of 14 Israeli adults named after deceased relatives, using interpretative phenomenological analysis to uncover personal and intergenerational meanings embedded in this practice. Participants were recrui

Too close for comfort: Intergenerational blame and disillusionment in social work supervision in the West Bank, Palestine.

Palestinian social work is taking form in the West Bank in the context of Israel's increasingly violent and restrictive multigenerational occupation, with limited relevant theory and research to guide practice. Social work students in Palestine, as elsewhere, learn to practice under the supervision of experienced social workers in clinics, hospitals, schools, and other agencies. Supervision becomes a key setting for the hidden curriculum-teaching and learning that is not officially recognized. We aimed to study training supervision in Palestine as a window on the moral organizing of the profes

Dynamic intergenerational support and anxiety-depression in aging: Insights from latent transitions to symptom networks.

Intergenerational support is crucial for older adults' mental health, yet its dynamic trajectories and links with anxiety and depression remain underexplored. This study examined the transitions of intergenerational support and their predictors, and characterized anxiety-depression comorbidity networks across different transition patterns. Data from 3327 adults aged ≥65 in the 2014-2018 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) were analyzed. Intergenerational support, depressive symptoms (CESD), and anxiety symptoms (GAD) were assessed. The LTA identified four traject

Maternal education and the intergenerational transmission of birthweight: Evidence from Japan.

BACKGROUND: Birthweight is a key indicator of health capital, influencing long-term outcomes such as education, income, and adult health. Previous studies have examined both its determinants and consequences, showing that low birthweight is associated with poor health, limited schooling, and lower socioeconomic status later in life. However, the pathways of birthweight's intergenerational transmission remain insufficiently understood, particularly the mediating role of maternal education. Moreover, most existing evidence comes from Western countries, and little is known about these mechanisms
