Herein, we report a case of intermittent claudication (IC) caused by Buerger's disease (thromboangiitis obliterans {TAO}), which we treated using supervised exercise therapy (SET). The patient was a 58-year-old male with a history of smoking who presented with IC and resting pain in the right lower extremity, which had led to necrosis of the right first toe eight years prior to presentation. The non-healing right first toe was amputated and the patient underwent angiogenesis therapy in the right lower extremity. Despite continued strict smoking cessation and antiplatelet medication, the patien

Intermittent claudication is a frequent complaint in lower extremity artery disease, but approximately two thirds of patients are asymptomatic, most of which are diabetic patients. Non-invasive angiological and microrheological tests on diabetic subjects with and without intermittent claudication were performed in the present study. In total, 98 diabetic patients were included and divided into two groups: 20 patients (63.5 ± 8.8 years, 55% men, 45% women) had intermittent claudication, 78 patients (65.5 ± 9.3 years, 61.5% men, 38.5% women) were asymptomatic. Intermittent claudication (IC) is a classic symptom of peripheral artery disease, with first line treatment being supervised exercise therapy (SET). Despite this, SET is frequently underutilised, and adherence is often poor. An alternative option are home-based exercise programmes (HBEP). Although HBEPs are well tolerated, to the authors' knowledge, no research has assessed their safety. The aim of this review was to assess the safety of HBEPs in people living with IC. We performed an electronic search of the MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library databases. The main parameter of interest was c

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate the outcomes of endovascular treatment in patients with moderate and severe claudication due to femoropopliteal disease, that is, disease of the superficial femoral and popliteal arteries.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients with moderate and severe claudication (Rutherford 2 and 3) undergoing endovascular treatment for FP disease between January 2012 and December 2017 at two university-affiliated hospitals was performed. All procedures were performed by vascular surgeons. Primary outcomes were mortality, freedom from reintervention, major

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the association between mental health and intermittent claudication (IC) perception, reporting and treatment in subjects with peripheral artery disease (PAD).
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Literature searches of experimental and observational studies published until February 1st, 2016 were conducted using the following electronic databases: Medline/PubMed and Embase. The selection criteria for the studies included a population of patients diagnosed with peripheral artery disease who reported symptoms of intermittent claudication and we

STUDY DESIGN: We studied baseline magnetic resonance images of 155 patients with intermittent neurogenic claudication and lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and patient data were gathered from participants of a randomized trial.
OBJECTIVE: It is believed that the narrowness of the lumbar spinal canal correlates to the severity of complaints and that it may be a good predictor of clinical outcome if treated. However, this hypothesis has never been (prospectively) tested.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: MRI is an important tool to confirm the diagnosis of LSS as a cause

Adventitial cystic disease (ACD) is an uncommon and rare vascular entity characterized by a highly viscous and mucinous cyst located in the adventitia of an artery. Although first described in the external iliac artery, the disease is more frequently sited in the popliteal artery. ACD characteristically occurs in young adults, mostly male, with intermittent claudication as the initial presenting symptom. As the cyst enlarges, it leads to vascular compression with stenosis or occlusion. Because cystic formation of the popliteal artery is uncommon, the disease is often unrecognized. We report a

STUDY DESIGN: The spinal canal and neural foramina dimensions of cadaver lumbar spines were quantified during flexion and extension using magnetic resonance imaging before and after placement of an interspinous process implant.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effect of the implant on the dimensions of the spinal canal and neural foramina during flexion and extension.
SUMMARY OF THE BACKGROUND DATA: Lumbar neurogenic intermittent claudication symptoms are typically exacerbated during extension and relieved during flexion. It is understood that the dimensions of the spinal canal and neural foramen

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on the efficacy of the antithrombotic drugs available for patients with intermittent claudication.
METHODS: A Medline and manual search was used to identify relevant publications. Uncontrolled or retrospective studies, double reports or trials without clinical outcomes were excluded. Included studies were graded as level 1 (randomised and double- or assessor-blind), level 2 (open randomised), or level 3 (non-randomised comparative). Mortality, cerebro- or cardiovascular events, amputations, arterial occlusions or number of revascularization procedures perform

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is associated with intermittent claudication (IC), leading to a lower quality of life. Although Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE) has been investigated for the treatment of IC, its clinical efficacy remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of high-dose, long-term GbE therapy in patients with PAD and IC.
METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter phase 4 trial enrolled patients with stable PAD and Fontaine stage IIb IC from 15 hospitals in South Korea. Participants were random

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) affects 20-30% of older adults and is associated with intermittent claudication (IC), which is walking-induced pain. This study compared the regularity and symmetry of gait between healthy older adults and adults with PAD, and between IC and non-IC conditions in the PAD group. Eighteen control (70.7 ± 6.3 years) and 11 PAD participants (67.0 ± 10.1 years) walked overground at a continuous, self-selected speed. A waist-mounted accelerometer determined step time, stride time, gait speed and mediolateral (ML), vertical (V) and anteroposterior (AP) gait regularity

BACKGROUND: Six-min walking test (6MWT) has been widely in patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD) to quantify the walking impairment and the efficacy of different therapeutic interventions. Despite the aforementioned usefulness of 6MWT for PAD, the information provided by this test goes beyond the meters walked. The aim of this study was to describe the relative values of 6MWT and body weight-walking distance product (DW) in patients with symptomatic PAD.
METHODS: Two hundred twenty-seven patients with symptomatic PAD participated in the study. The 6MWT was performed and ab

OBJECTIVE: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a degenerative spinal condition affecting nearly 50% of patients presenting with lower back pain. The goal of this review is to present and summarize the current data on how LSS presents in various populations, how it is diagnosed, and current therapeutic strategies. Properly understanding the prevalence, presentation, and treatment options for individuals suffering from LSS is critical to providing patients the best possible care.
RESULTS: The occurrence of LSS is associated with advanced age. In elderly patients, LSS can be challenging to identify

AIMS: The long-term life expectancy and fate of the leg, including progression rate to critical limb ischaemia (CLI), were analysed in de novo patients with intermittent claudication (IC).
METHODS AND RESULTS: A prospective cohort study was performed in 1107 patients with de novo IC. The endpoints were overall survival (OS), freedom from major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), freedom from major adverse cardiovascular and limb events (MACLE), and fate of the leg. The 5-, 10-, 15-, and 20-year rates were 73.3, 47.8, 28.1, and 14.9% for OS, and 63.0, 35.6, 18.5, and 5.7% for freedom from MA

Intermittent claudication is frequently associated with atherosclerotic disease, but differential diagnosis must be sought in patients with no traditional risk factors. Cystic adventitial disease, of unknown etiology, most frequently affects the popliteal artery, and occasionally presents as intermittent claudication. We report a case of this disease and the surgical treatment, and discuss some aspects related to etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

The clinical effect of verapamil was tested in 24 patients with intermittent claudication in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover study. Slow-release verapamil or placebo was given for two periods of three weeks. The walking distance, systemic blood pressure, and ankle-brachial blood pressure index were measured. Furthermore, a possible change in peripheral vascular tone was provoked by hyperventilation. The walking distance rose after both verapamil (40%) and placebo (31%) (p less than 0.01 for both) but tended to increase only after verapamil (7%) as compared with placeb

The relationship between personality factors in intermittent claudication and the patient's compliance with the therapeutic regimen was studied. Fifty-three patients with intermittent claudication were clinically examined, interviewed and tested with the Wechsler Intelligence Test, the Rorschach Test and the Ceasarec-Marke Inventory. The patients were given self-care program with four recommendations. After half a year, the clinical examinations and interviews were repeated. The results showed that the compliance with self-care program was relatively poor. Hostility, aggressiveness and affect-
