Inhibitory control and problematic Internet-pornography use - The important balancing role of the insula.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diminished control over a specific behavior is a core characteristic in addictive behaviors such as problematic Internet-pornography (IP) use. First studies suggest that a hyperactivity of the impulsive system is one reason for impulsive behaviors in the context of problematic IP use. The tripartite-process theory of addiction explains neurocognitive mechanisms beyond common dual-process theories in addictive behaviors. However, the role of the reflective and interoceptive system is still unresolved. METHODS: The study comprised a stop-signal task (SST) including neutral

Internet Use Habits, Parental Control and Psychiatric Comorbidity in Young Subjects with Asperger Syndrome.

We aimed to investigate the characteristics of internet use in a clinical sample of 60 young subjects with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and its relationship with parental control and psychiatric comorbidity. Of the participants, 38.3% were classified as having problematic internet use (PIU). Subjects with normal internet use (NIU), compared to the subjects with PIU, had significantly higher scores on parental control scale. While there was no significant difference in terms of any comorbid diagnoses between subjects with NIU versus PIU, severity of depressive symptoms was found to predict higher sco

Diagnostic Criteria for Problematic Internet Use among U.S. University Students: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation.

Empirical studies have identified increasing rates of problematic Internet use worldwide and a host of related negative consequences. However, researchers disagree as to whether problematic Internet use is a subtype of behavioral addiction. Thus, there are not yet widely accepted and validated diagnostic criteria for problematic Internet use. To address this gap, we used mixed-methods to examine the extent to which signs and symptoms of problematic Internet use mirror DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder, gambling disorder, and Internet gaming disorder. A total of 27 university

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity in patients with pathological gambling and internet use disorder.

Alterations in secretion of stress hormones within the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis have repeatedly been found in substance-related addictive disorders. It has been suggested that glucocorticoids might contribute to the development and maintenance of substance use disorders by facilitatory effects on behavioral responses to substances of abuse. The objective of this pilot study was to investigate HPA axis activity in patients with non-substance-related addictive disorders, i.e. pathological gambling and internet use disorder. We measured plasma levels of copeptin, a vasopressin su

Internet use among head and neck cancer survivors in the North West of England.

In general, use of the internet by patients in their healthcare is increasing. However, its use specifically among those with head and neck cancer in the UK has not been reported. The aims of this study were to report access to the internet by survivors of head and neck cancer, to indicate where it fits within their information sources, how they have used it, and how they might use it in future. A question on its use has been included in annual surveys of patients since 2006. Patient-reported access to the internet increased from 32% in 2006 to 54% in 2010. There were considerable differences

Relationship Between Problematic Internet Use and Health Literacy with Health-Promoting Lifestyle among Students.

BACKGROUND: Studying at university is a transitional and dynamic period, which provides an optimal opportunity for fostering healthy behaviors. But the high prevalence of problematic internet use (PIU) among students may hinder the development and establishment of healthy behaviors and a health-promoting lifestyle (HPL). PIU is important due to its impact on academic performance, social relationships, and policymaking on this issue. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between PIU and health literacy (HL) with HPL among students. METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive-analytica

Internet Gaming Disorder and Nonmedical Prescription Drug Use: The Moderating Role of Student Status.

Internet gaming disorder (IGD) and nonmedical prescription drug use (NMPDU) are prevalent, co-occurring concerns among young adults. Although prior research links problematic gaming and substance misuse, few studies have examined this relationship in non-college populations or whether student status modifies this association. This study examined the relationship between Gaming Addiction Scale (GAS) score and NMPDU among 1022 Rhode Island young adults aged 18 to 25. In the total sample, 44.6% identified as cisgender heterosexual female, 42.4% as sexual or gender minority (SGM), and 13.0% as cis

How stress influences short video addiction in China: an extended compensatory internet use model.

INTRODUCTION: The rise of short video applications has become a defining feature of modern digital media consumption, drawing increasing attention from researchers due to issues related to short video addiction. While earlier studies have examined the perceived stress as a cause of short video addiction, there is limited understanding of the potential mechanisms underlying the relationship between these two variables. Building on compensatory Internet use (CIU) theory, this study introduces an extended model (E-CIU) to explore how stress, compensatory motivations (i.e., social interaction and

Problematic Internet Use Associated with Symptomatic Dry Eye Disease in Medical Students from Peru.

PURPOSE: Dry eye is a multifactorial ocular surface disease (DED) characterized by a loss of tear film homeostasis, which is widely associated with alterations in mental health. Problematic internet use (PIU) is defined as the feeling of concern about using this tool irresistibly, for longer periods than usual, accompanied by anguish that results from not doing so without reaching mania or hypomania behaviors. Both PIU and DED present a theoretical link; however, there are no published studies that report its relationship with problematic internet use. Therefore, this study aims to determine t

Screening for Problematic Internet Use May Help Identify Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease (PD) represent emerging problems with potentially devastating consequences. The standard screening methods for impulse control disorders are clinically imperfect. Although it is rarely reported, many patients utilize the Internet to fulfill their compulsive behaviors because of its easy accessibility. We designed a study to test the hypothesis that an active screening for excessive Internet use and Internet addiction might improve the sensitivity of identification of impulse control disorders. METHODS: The standard screening method

Internet pornography use: perceived addiction, psychological distress, and the validation of a brief measure.

The authors aimed to validate a brief measure of perceived addiction to Internet pornography refined from the 32-item Cyber Pornography Use Inventory, report its psychometric properties, and examine how the notion of perceived addiction to Internet pornography might be related to other domains of psychological functioning. To accomplish this, 3 studies were conducted using a sample of undergraduate psychology students, a web-based adult sample, and a sample of college students seeking counseling at a university's counseling center. The authors developed and refined a short 9-item measure of pe
