Interrupted time series analysis using autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models: a guide for evaluating large-scale health interventions.

BACKGROUND: Interrupted time series analysis is increasingly used to evaluate the impact of large-scale health interventions. While segmented regression is a common approach, it is not always adequate, especially in the presence of seasonality and autocorrelation. An Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model is an alternative method that can accommodate these issues. METHODS: We describe the underlying theory behind ARIMA models and how they can be used to evaluate population-level interventions, such as the introduction of health policies. We discuss how to select the shape of t

Revaccination with measles-mumps-rubella vaccine and hospitalization for infection in Denmark and Sweden - An interrupted time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: In a previous cohort study of 4-year-old Danish children, revaccination with the live measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR) was associated with a 16% reduction in the rate of hospitalization lasting two days or longer for non-measles-mumps-rubella infections. AIM: To examine if the introduction of revaccination with MMR at 4 years of age in Denmark (spring 2008) and at 7-9 years of age in Sweden (autumn 2009), at a time when there was virtually no measles, mumps or rubella cases, was associated with a reduction in the rate of hospitalization-for-infection lasting two days or longer

Impact of syndrome-specific antimicrobial stewardship interventions on use of and resistance to fluoroquinolones: An interrupted time series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolones are often prescribed unnecessarily and are an important risk factor for infection with fluoroquinolone-resistant gram-negative bacilli and Clostridioides difficile. METHODS: We conducted a quasi-experimental study to determine the impact of sequential syndrome-specific stewardship interventions on use of and resistance to fluoroquinolones in a tertiary care hospital. An initial 2-year intervention focused on reducing treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria and ensuring concordance of urinary tract infection treatment with guidelines. A second 5-year intervention foc

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dengue in Brazil: Interrupted time series analysis of changes in surveillance and transmission.

Measures to curb the spread of SARS-CoV-2 impacted not only COVID-19 dynamics, but also other infectious diseases, such as dengue in Brazil. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted not only transmission dynamics due to changes in mobility patterns, but also several aspects of surveillance, such as care seeking behavior and clinical capacity. However, we lack a clear understanding of the overall impact on dengue in different parts of Brazil and the contribution of individual causal drivers. In this study, we estimated the gap between expected and observed dengue cases in each Brazilian state from March
