A lumbar chondroma originating from the intervertebral disc.

BACKGROUND: Chondromas, benign cartilaginous primary bone tumors, seldom occur in the spine. Most spinal chondromas arise from the cartilaginous parts of the vertebra. Chondromas originating from the intervertebral disc are extraordinarily rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 65-year-old female experienced recurrence of low back pain and left-sided lumbar radiculopathy after microdiscectomy and microdecompression. A mass continuous with the intervertebral disc was found to be compressing the left L3 nerve root and was resected. Histologic examination revealed a benign chondroma. CONCLUSION: Chondromas

Association between intervertebral disc degeneration and Behçet's disease.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic systemic vasculitis with a wide range of clinical findings. It has both autoinflammatory and autoimmune features and manifests with recurrent inflammatory attacks involving the innate immune system. Recently, autoinflammation has started to take place in the pathogenesis of intervertebral disc degeneration. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between intervertebral disc degeneration and BD. We evaluated patients with BD who suffered neck or low back pain in the last 1 year. Eighty four patients underwent musculoskeletal system examination wi

Prognostic Factors in Canine Acute Intervertebral Disc Disease.

Knowledge of the prognosis of acute spinal cord injury is critical to provide appropriate information for clients and make the best treatment choices. Acute intervertebral disc extrusions (IVDE) are a common cause of pain and paralysis in dogs with several types of IVDE occurring. Important prognostic considerations are recovery of ambulation, return of urinary and fecal continence, resolution of pain and, on the negative side, development of progressive myelomalacia. Initial injury severity affects prognosis as does type of IVDE, particularly when considering recovery of continence. Overall,

Low back pain, intervertebral disc and occupational diseases.

Nonspecific low back pain and sciatica are prevalent diseases among working adults and have become a worrying occupational health issue because they sometimes affect continuation or resumption of employment. Epidemiological studies that based questionnaires on workers' healthcare consumption have shown a higher prevalence of these disorders in certain industrial sectors. Thus, low back disorders are usually more prevalent among workers exposed to cumulative lumbar load such as manual handling, awkward postures of the trunk and whole-body vibrations. In addition, morphological and biomechanical

Biomechanical analysis of the camelid cervical intervertebral disc.

Chronic low back pain (LBP) is a prevalent global problem, which is often correlated with degenerative disc disease. The development and use of good, relevant animal models of the spine may improve treatment options for this condition. While no animal model is capable of reproducing the exact biology, anatomy, and biomechanics of the human spine, the quality of a particular animal model increases with the number of shared characteristics that are relevant to the human condition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the camelid (specifically, alpaca and llama) cervical spine as a model

Pediatric intervertebral disc calcification: A no touch lesion.

Intervertebral disc calcification (IVDC), though rare, remains an important differential of pediatric spinal pain. A 7-year-old boy presented with sudden-onset severe neck pain and restricted movements. There was no definite history of trauma or infection. Imaging of the cervical spine showed calcification of the intervertebral disc at C2-3 level, with significant posterior protrusion into the spinal canal causing compression of the cervical spinal cord. The child was kept on conservative management. The calcification and posterior protrusion showed near-complete resolution on 3-month follow-u

Determinants of spontaneous resorption of intervertebral disc herniations.

STUDY DESIGN: A follow-up of disc herniation (herniated nucleus pulposus [HNP]) resorption on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). OBJECTIVE: To assess the determinants of resorption of HNP. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Neovascularization in the outermost areas of HNP, presenting as an enhancing rim in gadolinium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid MR images, is thought to be a major determinant of spontaneous resorption of HNP. METHODS: Patients with HNP-induced sciatica at baseline were rescanned at 2 months (N = 74) and after 12 months (N = 53). The volume of HNP (mm), thickness (mm) and ext

Microsurgical management of the lumbar intervertebral disc-disease.

One hundred consecutive patients operated on for sciatica pain using microsurgical techniques between April 1984 and February 1985 were evaluated retrospectively. This paper gives preoperative clinical data, end-result of surgery, rate of complications and true recurrent herniations. On the basis of the results, both soon after operation and at later follow-up (between three and five years) we feel encouraged to continue using this mode of operation. Complete or significant pain relief was achieved in 92% of patients; 93% were able to return to their preoperative normal physical activities. Th

Neurogenic bladder dysfunction in lumbar intervertebral disc prolapse.

Lumbar disc prolapse with urinary dysfunction is an uncommon condition. The clinical, pathological and follow-up details of 30 patients are presented. Detrusor recovery is rare and most patients are left with an areflexic bladder. Female patients with lumbar disc prolapse and an areflexic detrusor who strain to empty their bladders are likely to develop genuine stress incontinence. This may be managed by the early institution of intermittent self-catheterisation, which may reduce the need for incontinence surgery.

Lumbar intervertebral disc herniation: treatment by rotational manipulation.

We describe the case of a patient with a lumbar disc herniation who underwent a course of side posture manipulation. Despite the appearance of an enormous central herniation on the CT scan, the patient improved considerable during only 2 wk of treatment. The disparity which so commonly exists between radiological and clinical findings is depicted in this case. Further, it is emphasized that manipulation has been shown to be an effective treatment for some patients with lumbar disc herniation. While complications of this form of treatment have been reported in the literature, such incidents are

Microstructural imaging of the cartilaginous endplate in the intervertebral disc.

1 OBJECTIVE: Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is a major risk factor for the development of chronic low back pain (LBP), affecting millions globally, particularly as they age. IVD degeneration can promote inflammation, and reduce spinal stability leading to compression of nerve roots. Research has primarily focused on the annulus fibrosus (AF) or nucleus pulposus (NP), with an unmet need to explore the physiology of the cartilaginous endplate (CEP) and its microstructural assessment in IVD degeneration. Imaging the microstructure of the CEP, a relatively thin layer between the IVD and ve

[Biomechanics of the intervertebral disc : Consequences of degenerative changes].

The intervertebral disc represents the flexible connection between two adjacent vertebral bodies. Intervertebral discs, therefore, give the spine its enormous range of motion. At the same time, intervertebral discs distribute the load evenly over the bony vertebral bodies to ensure load transfer from the upper body to the pelvis, provide sufficient stability, and absorb shocks during everyday movements as well as under extreme loads. The two tissue regions of the intervertebral disc, the central fluid-rich core (nucleus pulposus) and the lamellae of the outer fibrous ring (annulus fibrosus) ex

A Brief Review of the Degenerative Intervertebral Disc Disease.

IntroductionThe degenerative processes of the intervertebral disc represent an important cause of morbidity in everyday clinical practice, exerting burden on patients and clinicians treating them. Numerous factors may initiate degenerative processes, which most commonly affect the nucleus pulposus and ultimately influence the biomechanics of the whole spine.AimThis paper provides an overview from the literature about the process, causes and mechanisms of disc degeneration and the associated factors.MethodsThe scientific literature was reviewed through PubMed, Medline and Science Direct. The cell biology of intervertebral disc aging and degeneration.

Intervertebral disc degeneration, which mimics disc aging but occurs at an accelerated rate, is considered to be related to neck or low back pain and disc herniation. Degenerated discs show breakdown of the extracellular matrix and thus fail to bear the daily loadings exerted on the spine. Rather than a passive process of wear and tear, disc degeneration is an aberrant, cell-mediated response to progressive structural failure due to aging and other environmental factors such as abnormal mechanical stress. With aging and degeneration, disc cells undergo substantially biologic changes, including
