BACKGROUND: Intestinal obstruction in pregnancy is rare. The mortality rate is higher during pregnancy than in the general population and applies to fetal as well as maternal survival. Major causes of intestinal obstruction in the pregnant women include adhesions, volvulus and intussusception.
CASE: A 27-year-old woman, gravida 2, para 1, estimated gestational age approximately 26 weeks, with a high-level, complete small bowel obstruction. The patient failed a trial of conservative management and required laparotomy, at which time a congenital malrotation was found. She was treated successful

From the fragmentary studies performed to date of both functional obstruction and the ontogeny of intestinal motility, several conclusions can be drawn. The development of motor activity that is primarily dependent on neuronal activity, such as sucking, swallow-induced peristalsis of the esophagus, and cyclic fasting small intestinal motor activity, occurs according to a timetable that is similar in all species studies is gestationally dependent, but its timing during gestation is species specific. Postprandial events, including gastric emptying and continuous postprandial motor activity in th

A 73-year-old man presented with nausea, abdominal discomfort, and distention persisting for the past five days. He had previously been diagnosed with stage III peripheral CD4+ T cell lymphoma and had initiated chemotherapy comprising vincristine two weeks prior to presentation. An evaluation revealed diffuse colon distention and pneumatosis intestinalis without mechanical obstruction, consistent with acute colonic pseudo-obstruction. The patient underwent surgical intervention and was subsequently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit due to distributive shock. Vincristine-induced ileus followe

"Bariolith" is defined as the concretion of barium sulfate in the intestine after performing a radiological study with said contrast. Complications derived from the use of barium are exceptional, but appendicitis, intussusception, volvulus, ulceration, ischemia and perforation have been described. We present the case of a 62 years old woman, who underwent a EGD exploration on the 15th of January 2021 as a part of her study for suspected GERD.

We present the case of an 83-year-old male, with a past medical history of benign pneumoperitoneum secondary to pneumatosis intestinalis which evolved for a number of years with periodic follow-ups. The patient comes to the Emergency Room with sintomatology of intestinal obstruction. Urgent surgical management is decided, an exploratory laparotomy is performed where an intestinal obstruction secondary to pneumatosis intestinalis, with loss of structure of the intestinal wall as visualized in the images, is determined; therefore resection of the affected small intestine segment and primary anas

Ampullary adenocarcinoma is a malignant tumor that arises from the ampullary complex, distal to the confluence of common bile duct and pancreatic duct. It is a rare tumor and pathologically differentiated into intestinal or pancreaticobiliary in origin. Management is surgical resection. We report a case of a 67-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain, vomiting, and constipation. Computed tomography scan showed a cystic mass compressing the duodenum and causing small intestinal obstruction. Pathologic evaluation was consistent with ampullary adenocarcinoma.

Acute appendicitis has been proven to be a usual cause of mechanical small bowel obstruction since 1901, but there has been very little specific research on this subject. It usually occurs as an effect of adhesion because of periappendicular inflammation. Although previous studies exist, this presentation of acute appendicitis is not widely identified, which might lead to delays in making the right diagnosis and initiating treatment. We herein report a 17-year-old male patient who presented with the clinical manifestations of intestinal obstruction and fever for 3 days. Preoperative ultrasound

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the small bowel and is caused by the incomplete obliteration of the omphalomesenteric duct during the eighth week of gestation.
METHODS: We report the case of a 51-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with epigastric pain, vomiting, and abdominal distension. Clinically, he had a high intestinal obstruction without any mechanical cause on computed tomography scan. A median laparotomy was proposed.
RESULTS: An internal ileum hernia was identified twisted around a giant Meckel's diverticulum with a mes

Emphysematous pyelonephritis is a severe necrotizing infection characterized by the presence of gas and/or fluid in the renal parenchyma, collecting system, or perirenal tissues. Emphysematous pyelonephritis with approximately 15 cm air-fluid level, diffused ureteral involvement, and the accumulation of gas in liver and peritoneal cavity is very rare. Here, we reported a severe emphysematous pyelonephritis with multiple huge air-fluid level mimicking intestinal obstruction and with the accumulation of gas in liver and ureter in computed tomography imaging. The patient was successfully managed

Internal herniation of small intestine is a very rare entity, and it poses a real diagnostic challenge clinically. Recurrent entrapment of the bowel may lead to partial to complete intestinal obstruction and eventually strangulation of the small bowel. Of this rare clinical entity, left paraduodenal hernia is more common. High index of suspicion with prompt management may prevent bowel strangulation and gangrene. We present a case of acute intestinal obstruction due to left paraduodenal hernia with malrotation of midgut in a 55-year-old male patient.

UNLABELLED: Chronic NSAID use can cause diaphragm like strictures within the bowel leading to intestinal obstruction. This rare entity is called diaphragm disease. Preoperative diagnosis is extremely difficult. NSAID related injury should be considered in patient with intestinal obstruction of unclear etiology. We hereby present an interesting case of a 46 years old lady with significant history of long term naproxen use, who presented with nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with acute intestinal obstruction. She received a trial of conservative management which was unsucce

Bezoars and foreign bodies are frequently encountered in children with psychiatric disorders. Eating disorder (called pica) occurs predominantly in some high-risk patients such as psychiatric and mentally disabled children. Small-bowel obstruction is an uncommon complication of ingested foreign body because the foreign body is able to cross the whole small intestine and be excreted in the feces. We present the case history of an autistic adolescent who was operated on because of bowel obstruction due to an unusual foreign body.

The cause of intestinal obstruction in children can occasionally be obscure although history and examination usually directs the clinician to the correct diagnosis. Pica, the ingestion of non-nutrient material, however can be surreptitious and escape detection. A case report is presented of a 9-year-old child with an extensive and complicated surgical history. Following lengthy investigation and progression of sub-acute to acute intestinal obstruction over a long period, the cause was finally found to be due to persistent ingestion of Blu-Tack -- a common household putty-like adhesive.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal obstruction is a common cause of childhood surgical emergency in the tropics. The aim of this paper was to assess the pattern and the outcome of mangement of intestinal obstruction in Nigerian children.
STUDY DESIGN: The clinical reccords of all the cases of childhood intestinal obstructions managed at a teaching hospital in northwestern Nigeria between 1999 and 2003 were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: There were 54 children, 44(81.5 %) were boys and 10 (8.5 %) were girls (m:f=4.4:1). Fifteen (27.8%) and 22 (46.2%) were neonates and infants, respectively. The cause

Intestinal obstruction in the newborn infant and older child may be due to a variety of conditions, including atresia and stenosis, annular pancreas, malrotation, duplication cyst, meconium ileus, meconium plug syndrome and neonatal small left colon syndrome, Hirschsprung's disease, neoplasia, trauma, and other rarer causes. The mode of presentation can be acute or more chronic with systemic upset due to shock. Neonates, more so than older children, with unrecognized intestinal obstruction deteriorate rapidly, show an increase of associated morbidity and mortality and appropriate surgical trea

OBJECTIVE: To discuss diagnostic and therapeutic implications of gallstone ileus and to report the case of a patient seen at our Hospital due to an intestinal obstruction secondary to gallstone ileus.
REPORT: A 63 years old male with intestinal obstruction secondary to gallstone ileus. Several studies were performed, such as panendoscopy, upper gastrointestinal series, and intestinal transit with poor results preventing a definitive diagnosis. For this reason, the patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy, which showed in this a grant gallstone in a giant jejunum.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical intestinal obstruction remains one of the commonest surgical emergencies. With hernias being electively repaired and obstructive hernias becoming less common, adhesive obstruction has emerged as the leading cause of intestinal obstruction in the west. This study was designed to analyse any such changes in the pattern of intestinal obstruction in the population of Pondicherry of Tamilnadu of South India.
METHODS: Data were collected from the compiled case records at JIPMER, Pondicherry, both retrospectively and prospectively from 1984 to 1992 about the clinical aspects o

OBJECTIVE: To study the aetiology, morbidity and mortality of neonatal intestinal obstruction.
DESIGN: A retrospective study.
SETTING: Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Nigeria.
SUBJECTS: One hundred and fifty one neonates (< or = 28 days) undergoing surgery for mechanical intestinal obstruction.
RESULTS: The male/female ratio was 3:1 and median age at presentation was four days (range five hours-28 days). Anorectal malformation was the commonest cause, 104 (68.9%), 86.5% of which were high anomalies and 13.5% low; the median age at presentation was three days. Fifty two pe
