Percutaneous screw osteosynthesis for the treatment of intra-articular displaced calcaneus fractures.

PURPOSE: This systematic review investigates how percutaneous screw osteosynthesis for the treatment of intra-articular displaced calcaneus fractures differs from open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). METHODS: Randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials investigating adults with closed intra-articular displaced calcaneus fracture (Sanders type II - IV) treated with percutaneous screw osteosynthesis or ORIF were included. Severe vascular and neurological diseases or polytrauma patients were excluded. On January 29, 2024, five databases and two trial registries were search

Dorsal wrist plating for the management of intra-articular distal radius fractures.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the results of Dorsal Wrist Plating in intra-articular distal radius fractures with a dorsal displacement. In this prospective study, a single surgeon treated 20 patients with a (partially) intra-articular distal radius fracture with a dorsal rim avulsion or a dorsal Barton's type fragment. They all underwent an open reduction and internal fixation by Dorsal Wrist Plating. A total of 17 patients had a follow-up period of at least 12 months (mean follow- up of 17 months) and these patients were included in the study. Both functional and radiological outcome

[Arthroscopic-assisted management of intra-articular scapular fractures in a rugby player].

Scapular fractures are a rare injury entity accounting for 0,4-1 % of all fractures and 3-5 % of fractures involving the shoulder girdle. This study focuses on a 29-year-old male patient who sustained an intraarticular scapular fracture during a "Rugby Bundesliga" match after direct impact with another player. The clinical and radiological examinations showed a dislocated multifragmentary transverse scapular fracture involving the superior border, the medial border and the glenoid (Euler and Rüedi D2b/AO 14 F1.3e). The patient was subjected to arthroscopic surgery and underwent early postopera

Evaluation of patient outcomes after operative treatment of intra-articular calcaneus fractures.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous reduction with fixation and open reduction internal fixation are often used to treat intra-articular calcaneus fractures with no consensus on the preferred method. Open techniques have been associated with an increased risk of wound complications, while percutaneous techniques may result in inferior reduction capabilities. These injuries pose a challenge to patients as they often result in poor patient outcomes. We retrospectively analyzed patient outcomes of a single surgeon's experience in treating these injuries at a busy urban Level 1 trauma center. METHODS: Patie

Intraoperative Reduction Techniques for Surgical Management of Displaced Intra-Articular Calcaneal Fractures.

Fractures of the calcaneus are detrimental injuries, often caused by high-energy trauma. To best restore the functionality of a limb and allow normal ambulation, it is recommended to repair displaced intra-articular calcaneus fractures surgically. This article presents several methods of reduction and repair of the calcaneus. Traditionally, calcaneal fractures have been repaired through a lateral extensile incision that has been shown to have a high percentage of wound healing complications. In recent times, there has been a shift toward minimally invasive and sinus tarsi incisional approaches

Prognostic value of computed tomography classification systems for intra-articular calcaneus fractures.

BACKGROUND: There are several published computed tomography (CT) classification systems for calcaneus fractures, each validated by a different standard. The goal of this study was to measure which system would best predict clinical outcomes as measured by a widely used and validated musculoskeletal health status questionnaire. METHODS: Forty-nine patients with isolated intra-articular joint depression calcaneus fractures more than 2 years after treatment were identified. All had preoperative CT studies and were treated with open reduction and plate fixation using a lateral extensile approach.

The treatment of displaced intra-articular distal radius fractures in elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: From 2000 to 2012, the annual incidence of inpatient treatment for distal radius fracture in Germany rose from 65 to 86 per 100 000 persons. It is unclear whether open reduction and volar angle-stable plate osteosynthesis (ORIF), a currently advocated treatment, yields a better functional outcome or quality of life than closed reposition and casting. METHODS: In the ORCHID multi-center trial, 185 patients aged 65 and older with an AO type C distal radial fracture were randomly assigned to ORIF or closed reposition and casting. Their health-related quality of life and hand/arm func

Volar plate fixation of intra-articular distal radius fractures: a retrospective study.

Background Intra-articular fractures of the distal radius represent a therapeutic challenge as compared with the unstable extra-articular fractures. With the recent development of specifically designed internal fixation materials for the distal radius, treatment of these fractures by fragment-specific implants using two or more incisions has been advocated. Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a fixed-angle locking plate applied through a single volar approach in maintaining the radiographic alignment of unstable intra-articular fractures as well as to report th

[Osteosynthesis in distal intra-articular humeral fractures. External fixation with motion capacity].

The rising incidence of distal intra-articular humeral fracture in elderly patients associated with osteoporosis frequently leads to difficulties in acute reconstruction and may result in early failure of internal fixation. The biomechanics of the elbow joint and especially the flexor group as well as the brachioradialis muscle as part of the extensor group is analyzed. The complex motion pattern of the transarticular muscle groups increases the load on internal fixation and may affect the interface between implant and osteoporotic bone. An external fixator with motion capacity serves to prote

Tilted lateral radiographs in the evaluation of intra-articular distal radius fractures.

The anatomy of the distal radius confounds the assessment of fracture displacement of the lunate facet. Since reduction of the articular surface is paramount to obtaining good clinical results, this study was designed to evaluate whether a radiograph taken 22 degrees from true lateral (forearm held at a 22 degrees angle from the horizontal film cassette) would enhance the accuracy of measuring displacement. Fifteen lunate facet fractures of varying depression were produced in 7 fresh cadaveric wrists. Posteroanterior (PA), standard lateral, and 22 degrees tilted lateral radiographs were obtain

Functional and Radiological Outcome after Internal Fixation of Intra-articular Calcaneal Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Calcaneal fractures are rare injuries constituting 2% of all fractures. Fractures of calcaneum correspond to nearly 60-75% of the tarsal bone fractures. The calcaneum is the most commonly fractured tarsal bone 90% occur in males between 21 and 45 years of age. The calcaneal fracture may be extra-articular (sparing the subtalar joint) and intra-articular involving the subtalar joint. Intra-articular fractures account for approximately 75% of calcaneal fractures and have been associated with poor functional outcomes. In this study, we aim to assess the functional outcome of interna

Persian Fixation - A Novel Surgical Method for Intra-articular Distal Radius Fractures.

Background: Intra-articular distal radius fracture treatment options include Kirschner wires (K-wire) fixation, external fixation and plate fixation, however, fixation of small bone fragments in distal radius fractures in a secure and anatomical manner was a challenging issue with several limitations. In this study, we present a novel surgical method that we have called the Persian Fixation for intra-articular distal radius fracture and describe a short-term clinical result. Methods: We described the surgical procedure and clinical result of 15 patients between 2019 and 2020 in whom the Persia

Outcomes Associated With Scapholunate Ligament Injury Following Intra-Articular Distal Radius Fractures.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate a series of intra-articular distal radius fractures (DRFs) to determine whether patients without radiographic evidence of scapholunate (SL) ligament injury have a difference in outcomes in comparison with patients with radiographic evidence of SL ligament injury and no ligament repair or reconstruction. Our hypothesis is that there are no significant differences in outcomes between patients after treatment of their intra-articular DRF. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients from a single institution who sustained an intra-articular DRF
