Recruitment of intuitive versus analytic thinking strategies affects the role of working memory in a gambling task.

Previous studies found mixed results concerning the role of working memory (WM) in the gambling task (GT). Here, we aimed at reconciling inconsistencies by showing that the standard version of the task can be solved using intuitive strategies operating automatically, while more complex versions require analytic strategies drawing on executive functions. In Study 1, where good performance on the GT could be achieved using intuitive strategies, participants performed well both with and without a concurrent WM load. In Study 2, where analytical strategies were required to solve a more complex ver

Translating physicians' intuition into quantifiable data: clinical hospital-based surveillance to complement existing methods to address gaps in current surveillance systems.

Informal clinical exchanges among pediatricians frequently provide the first indications of emerging (para-)infectious diseases. However, these observations often remain anecdotal and unstructured, leaving gaps in traditional surveillance systems. In this Perspective, we advocate for the integration of active, hospital-based clinical surveillance to bolster early detection and response. Drawing on recent pediatric examples, including multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, acute hepatitis of unknown origin, invasive group A streptococcal disease, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, we show how f

Psychometric properties of a Greek translation of the intuitive eating Scale-3 (IES-3) in adults from Greece.

The Intuitive Eating Scale-3 (IES-3) is a new, 12-item measure of intuitive eating, which is recognised as a protective factor of disordered eating. Given its recency, there has been limited evaluation of the psychometric properties of the IES-3 in diverse national and linguistic contexts. Therefore, we report on the translation and psychometric evaluation of a novel Greek version of the IES-3 in Greek adults. A total of 1,138 women and 712 men completed the Greek IES-3 alongside additional measures selected to assess validity. Exploratory factor analysis with a first split-half subsample show

Quantifying the counter-intuitive effects of vaccination by coupling the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 and the evolution of human behaviors.

Vaccination is widely used to control the spread of infectious diseases. However, there is substantial evidence suggesting that the perceived immunity from vaccine drives the decrease of risk-awareness among vaccinated individuals, which results in the paradoxical increase of transmission risk, consequently leads to the counter-intuitive outcomes in disease control in the case of low vaccine effectiveness. In this study, we propose a novel method to quantify the counter-intuitive effects of vaccination in a complex environment with integrated dynamic factors. To this end, we begin by linking s

Development and efficacy of a cognitive dissonance-based intervention program for intuitive eating: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

Intuitive eating is an approach that encourages individuals to eat according to their body's hunger and satiety cues. Intuitive eating interventions vary in methodology, lack time-based monitoring, and are often not based on all intuitive eating principles. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and evaluate the efficacy of an intuitive eating intervention using cognitive dissonance strategies to increase intuitive eating, positive body image, and health-related motivation for physical exercise, as well as to reduce disordered eating behaviors. Brazilian women (n = 110) aged 18-35 were randoml

Chest wall tuberculosis: precision surgery with indigo carmine in limited cases for safe and intuitive lesion excision.

In addition to treatment with antituberculosis drugs, complete surgical excision is important for the cure of chest wall tuberculosis. However, surgery is often challenging to perform due to different factors such as the strong adhesion of tuberculous lesions to the surrounding normal tissue, growth of neovascularization and presence of fragile necrotic tissues. Firm adhesions, bleeding and fragile tissue make it difficult to determine the boundary with normal tissue and completely excide the lesion. Moreover, ingenuity is required. Herein, we report the identification of the boundary between

Nanozyme catalysis pressure-powered intuitive distance variation for portable quantitative detection of H2S with the naked eye.

As a representative gas of food spoilage, the development of rapid hydrogen sulfide (H2S) analysis strategies for food safety control is in great demand. Despite traditional methods for H2S detection possessing great achievements, they are still incapable of meeting the requirement of portability and quantitative detection at the same time. Herein, a nanozyme catalysis pressure-powered sensing platform that enables visual quantification with the naked eye is proposed. In this methodology, Pt nanozyme inherits the catalase-like activity to facilitate the decomposition of H2O2 to O2, which can s

Hepar-on-a-sensor-platform with hybridization chain reaction amplification strategy to intuitively monitor the hepatoxicity of natural compounds.

The irrational use of natural compounds in the treatment of diseases can lead to serious side effects, especially hepatoxicity, and its toxic effects are usually cumulative and imperceptible. Therefore, an accurate sensing platform is urgently needed to monitor the hepatotoxicity of natural compounds. Here, we deposited a thermo-responsive alginate-RGD/Pluronic hydrogel to construct an in vitro three-dimensional(3D) hepar-platform, and a thorough validation was adopted to evaluate the bioprinted hepatic constructs. The engineered hepar-platform was then employed to access its biological respon

A mitral valve repair update: simple, intuitive and physiological techniques, using running sutures (part I).

Today's mitral valve techniques are pluralistic, and the result of variable contributions over decades. However, they are often associated with subjectivity, and inter-surgeon variability, as well as differing outcomes. Here, we propose a set of conceptual techniques, which aim to simplify and standardize mitral valve repair, of which some we have already verified in practice.

Mitral valve repair update: simple, intuitive and physiological techniques, using running sutures (part II).

Modern mitral valve techniques are variable and, mostly, well-validated. However, they are skill dependent, and some lack of standardization, regarding the number and positioning of the cords, or the management of the targeted pathology. We continue the introduction of novel, perhaps more intuitive, aiming to simplify mitral valve repair, while achieving a reproducible result, of which some we have already verified.

Multivendor fully automatic uncertainty management approaches for the intuitive representation of DME fluid accumulations in OCT images.

Diabetes represents one of the main causes of blindness in developed countries, caused by fluid accumulations in the retinal layers. The clinical literature defines the different types of diabetic macular edema (DME) as cystoid macular edema (CME), diffuse retinal thickening (DRT), and serous retinal detachment (SRD), each with its own clinical relevance. These fluid accumulations do not present defined borders that facilitate segmentational approaches (specially the DRT type, usually not taken into account by the state of the art for this reason) so a diffuse paradigm is used for its detectio

Validating the Persian Intuitive Eating Scale-2 Among Breast Cancer Survivors Who Are Overweight/Obese.

Women with breast cancer are at risk of being overweight/obese which may consequently increase mortality. Intuitive eating is an adaptive eating behavior which might be beneficial for weight outcomes. The present study validated the Persian Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) among overweight/obese Iranian females with breast cancer. Women who were overweight/obese with breast cancer (n = 762; mean ± SD age = 55.1 ± 5.7 years) completed the following questionnaires: IES-2, General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE-6), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Short Form-12 (SF-12), Weight Bias Interna

Can We Achieve Intuitive Prosthetic Elbow Control Based on Healthy Upper Limb Motor Strategies?

Most transhumeral amputees report that their prosthetic device lacks functionality, citing the control strategy as a major limitation. Indeed, they are required to control several degrees of freedom with muscle groups primarily used for elbow actuation. As a result, most of them choose to have a one-degree-of-freedom myoelectric hand for grasping objects, a myoelectric wrist for pronation/supination, and a body-powered elbow. Unlike healthy upper limb movements, the prosthetic elbow joint angle, adjusted prior to the motion, is not involved in the overall upper limb movements, causing the rest

High-accuracy drilling with an image guided light weight robot: autonomous versus intuitive feed control.

PURPOSE: Assistance of robotic systems in the operating room promises higher accuracy and, hence, demanding surgical interventions become realisable (e.g. the direct cochlear access). Additionally, an intuitive user interface is crucial for the use of robots in surgery. Torque sensors in the joints can be employed for intuitive interaction concepts. Regarding the accuracy, they lead to a lower structural stiffness and, thus, to an additional error source. The aim of this contribution is to examine, if an accuracy needed for demanding interventions can be achieved by such a system or not. METH

The role of surgeon's intuition for acute type A aortic dissection in an era of evidence-based medicine: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Intuition may play a role in clinical practice. This prospective cohort study aimed to explore whether surgeons' intuition is valid in predicting the operative mortality of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). METHODS: After admission (before surgery), attending surgeons were asked to rate the mortality on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 to 3 representing unlikely, 4-6 possible, and 7-10 very likely. The area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to assess the accuracy of prediction models. RESULTS: A significantly higher Surgeon's

From Intuitive Concern to Safety Action: A Qualitative Meta-Synthesis of Nurses' Experiences of Recognising Patient Deterioration.

AIM: To synthesise qualitative evidence on nurses' experiences of intuitively recognising patient deterioration. BACKGROUND: Nurses often report intuition, gut feeling or a sense that "something is not right" when patients deteriorate, yet how such concern is experienced, assessed, communicated and acted upon remains insufficiently understood. DESIGN: Qualitative evidence synthesis. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library and the JBI EBP Database were searched for English-language peer-reviewed studies published from 1987 to September 2025. Intuitive omnidirectional vibrotactile feedback from a sensorized insole for lower-limb prostheses users: a preliminary assessment.

Objective.Non-invasive solutions for providing artificial sensory feedback to lower-limb prosthesis users are compact and convenient for clinical translation because they do not require additional surgery. However, they are mostly simpler feedback schemes characterized by limited information bandwidth and low spatial resolution. Additionally, feedback is often assessed using specialized tasks and conditions, which sometimes promote the use of feedback, limiting comprehensive psychophysical and ecological insights.Approach.This study introduces OmniFeel, a novel feedback system composed of eigh

A novel non-aqueous-plate method for easily and intuitively detecting the transesterification activity of lipase for enzymatic biodiesel.

The transesterification activity of lipase is a key factor to enzymatic biodiesel preparation. Herein, a novel non-aqueous-plate method was created to easily and intuitively detect the transesterification activity of lipase. The non-aqueous plate is a heated, emulsified, and cooled down mixture of animal fat with/without plant oil, tert-butanol, and methanol, in which solid-semitransparent support and dye are added to make it more stable and observable at room temperature. It was verified by gas chromatography that the transparent halo displayed on the non-aqueous plate was majorly transesteri
