Indications for Transfer and Care Pathways of Inuit Transferred to a Tertiary Centre for Childbirth in Québec, Canada: A Chart Review 2015-2019.

OBJECTIVES: Childbirth evacuation, the transfer of patients from rural and remote communities to urban centres for pregnancy care or childbirth, can be associated with numerous adverse health outcomes and contributes to widening health disparities between Inuit and non-Indigenous populations in Québec. We examined the indications and outcomes of childbirth evacuations among Inuit from Nunavik, Northern Québec transferred to a southern tertiary care centre. METHODS: A 5-year retrospective chart review included 677 pregnancies of 597 Inuit with obstetric indications transferred to a tertiary ca

Identification of a Founder GLDN Variant Associated With "Lethal" Arthrogryposis in Nunavik Inuit: Implications for Obstetrical and Long-Term Survivors' Management.

Biallelic variants in GLDN have recently been associated with lethal congenital contracture syndrome 11 (LCCS11), a form of fetal akinesia deformation sequence (FADS) with high neonatal mortality. In this report, we describe five individuals from two Canadian Inuit families originating from different communities in Nunavik all affected with FADS and harboring a rare homozygous missense variant, [NM_181789.4:c.82G >C p.(Ala28Pro)] in GLDN. Two pregnancies presented with significant obstetrical complications including placental abruption and hemorrhage. Four infants died shortly after birth, whi

Inuit parent perspectives on sexual health communication with adolescent children in Nunavut: "it's kinda hard for me to try to find the words".

BACKGROUND: For Inuit, the family unit has always played a central role in life and in survival. Social changes in Inuit communities have resulted in significant transformations to economic, political and cultural aspects of Inuit society. Where the family unit was once the setting for dialogue on family relations and sexuality, this has largely been replaced by teachings from the medical community and/or the school system. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore Inuit parent perspectives on sharing knowledge with teenage children about sexual health and relationships. METHOD: A

Cross-over comparative study of cold-induced brown adipose tissue activity in Greenlandic Inuit and Danes: rationale, design, and methodology.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is essential for non-shivering thermogenesis, a key survival mechanism for Arctic populations exposed to chronic cold. As BAT dissipates energy as heat, it presents a potential target for improving cardiometabolic health and treating obesity. The Arctic Inuit represents a unique metabolic model due to distinct genetic and environmental adaptations. This study advances methods in cardiometabolic research by investigating BAT activation in Arctic Inuit and ethnic Danes under cold exposure. A comparative crossover study of 20 Inuit and Danes includes two sessions: (A) t

Ethnic differences in CT derived abdominal body composition measures: a comparative retrospect pilot study between European and Inuit study population.

Understanding ethnic variations in body composition is crucial for assessing health risks. Universal models may not suit all ethnicities, and there is limited data on the Inuit population. This study aimed to compare body composition between Inuit and European adults using computed tomography (CT) scans and to investigate the influence of demographics on these measurements. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 50 adults (29 Inuit and 21 European) who underwent standard trauma CT scans. Measurements focused on skeletal muscle index (SMI), various fat indices, and densities at the third lum

Associations between Vitamin D Status and Type 2 Diabetes Measures among Inuit in Greenland May Be Affected by Other Factors.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological studies have provided evidence of an association between vitamin D insufficiency and type 2 diabetes. Vitamin D levels have decreased among Inuit in Greenland, and type 2 diabetes is increasing. We hypothesized that the decline in vitamin D could have contributed to the increase in type 2 diabetes, and therefore investigated associations between serum 25(OH)D3 as a measure of vitamin D status and glucose homeostasis and glucose intolerance in an adult Inuit population. METHODS: 2877 Inuit (≥18 years) randomly selected for participation in the Inuit Health in Transit

A founder AGL mutation causing glycogen storage disease type IIIa in Inuit identified through whole-exome sequencing: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Glycogen storage disease type III is caused by mutations in both alleles of the AGL gene, which leads to reduced activity of glycogen-debranching enzyme. The clinical picture encompasses hypoglycemia, with glycogen accumulation leading to hepatomegaly and muscle involvement (skeletal and cardiac). We sought to identify the genetic cause of this disease within the Inuit community of Nunavik, in whom previous DNA sequencing had not identified such mutations. METHODS: Five Inuit children with a clinical and biochemical diagnosis of glycogen storage disease type IIIa were recruited to

Coping with suicidal crisis in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland): inuit youth lived experiences of recovery and protective processes - a qualitative pilot study.

Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) continues to experience a very high burden of suicide, while knowledge about culturally meaningful recovery processes remains limited. This qualitative pilot study explores how Inuit individuals with lived experience of suicide attempts describe coping, turning points, and pathways toward thriving lives. Six participants who had experienced suicide attempts in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood, took part in semi-structured interviews conducted in Kalaallisut. Data were analyzed using systematic text condensation. Findings show that recovery was not experien

Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) in a vaccinated 16-month-old Inuit boy: a case report.

Necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) is rare and life-threatening. We report severe monomicrobial Hib NSTI in a 16-month-old Inuit child who had received 3 doses of the Hib vaccine, highlighting vaccine failure and host susceptibility. The child sustained a minor fall to the left thigh without skin breakdown and developed fever the same day, initially treated with amoxicillin for presumed acute otitis media. He re-presented with persistent fever, progressive leg pain, swelling, ecchymosis, and refusal to weight-bear, prompting air transfer to t

Increasing our knowledge about the epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori in Nunavik's Inuit population (Québec, Canada) using Qanuilirpitaa? 2017 cross-sectional survey.

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that may colonise and proliferate in human stomachs, leading invariably to chronic inflammation and, to a lesser extent, to peptic ulcers and cancer. The main objective of this study is to describe the epidemiology surrounding H. pylori in Nunavik's Inuit population using the 2004 and 2017 Health Surveys. Estimated prevalences were 70.9% for bacterial colonisation using a stool antigens test (SAT), 72.5% for anti-H. pylori antibodies, 12.7% for faecal occult blood in participants aged ≥ 50 and respectively of 28.4%, 11.2% and 2.4% for a prior diagnosis of col

Common low-density lipoprotein receptor p.G116S variant has a large effect on plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in circumpolar inuit populations.

BACKGROUND: Inuit are considered to be vulnerable to cardiovascular disease because their lifestyles are becoming more Westernized. During sequence analysis of Inuit individuals at extremes of lipid traits, we identified 2 nonsynonymous variants in low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR), namely p.G116S and p.R730W. METHODS AND RESULTS: Genotyping these variants in 3324 Inuit from Alaska, Canada, and Greenland showed they were common, with allele frequencies 10% to 15%. Only p.G116S was associated with dyslipidemia: the increase in LDL cholesterol was 0.54 mmol/L (20.9 mg/dL) per allele (P=5.

Suicide loss of a close family member in childhood and suicide later in life-a nationwide study among Inuit youth in Kalaallit Nunaat.

Suicide-related loss in close relations may lead to complicated grief and increase individual suicide risk. In Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), 60% of the population has lost a family member or a close friend to suicide. The study aimed to investigate the association between suicide-related loss of a close family member before the age of 10 and later suicide incidence. The study was a nationwide study using data from the central population register and register of causes of death including 25 663 individuals born between 1983 and 2012. Exposure was the loss of a mother, father, or one or more sib

Type A and type B botulism in the North: first reported cases due to toxin other than type E in Alaskan Inuit.

Botulism outbreaks shown to be due to type A and type B toxin occurred in Alaska, a region previously known for only type E botulism. The outbreak due to type A toxin involved three people, two of whom died. The outbreak due to type B toxin involved nine people, none of whom died. Both outbreaks were in Inuit villages, and native foods were incriminated. The occurrence of these outbreaks strongly suggests that Clostridium botulinum, types A and B are indigenous to Alaska. The outbreaks underscore the need for initial treatment of patients with antitoxin that is trivalent (ABE), even in Arctic

Response inhibition and error monitoring during a visual go/no-go task in inuit children exposed to lead, polychlorinated biphenyls, and methylmercury.

BACKGROUND: Lead (Pb) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are neurotoxic contaminants that have been related to impairment in response inhibition. OBJECTIVES: In this study we examined the neurophysiological correlates of the response inhibition deficits associated with these exposures, using event-related potentials (ERPs) in a sample of school-age Inuit children from Arctic Québec exposed through their traditional diet. METHODS: In a prospective longitudinal study, we assessed 196 children (mean age, 11.3 years) on a visual go/no-go response inhibition paradigm. Pb, PCB, and mercury (Hg)
