Sex-specific stress tolerance, proteolysis, and lifespan in the invertebrate Tigriopus californicus.

Because stress tolerance and longevity are mechanistically and phenotypically linked, the sex with higher acute stress tolerance might be expected to also live longer. On the other hand, the association between stress tolerance and lifespan may be complicated by tradeoffs between acute tolerance and long-term survival. Here we use the copepod Tigriopus californicus to test for sex differences in stress resistance, proteolytic activity and longevity. Unlike many model organisms, this species does not have sex chromosomes. However, substantial sex differences were still observed. Females were fo

Invertebrate models of kallmann syndrome: molecular pathogenesis and new disease genes.

Kallmann Syndrome is a heritable disorder characterized by congenital anosmia, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and, less frequently, by other symptoms. The X-linked form of this syndrome is caused by mutations affecting the KAL1 gene that codes for the extracellular protein anosmin-1. Investigation of KAL1 function in mice has been hampered by the fact that the murine ortholog has not been identified. Thus studies performed in other animal models have contributed significantly to an understanding of the function of KAL1. In this review, the main results obtained using the two invertebrate models

Invertebrate models of spinal muscular atrophy: insights into mechanisms and potential therapeutics.

Invertebrate genetic models with their tractable neuromuscular systems are effective vehicles for the study of human nerve and muscle disorders. This is exemplified by insights made into spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster and the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans. For speed and economy, these invertebrates offer convenient, whole-organism platforms for genetic screening as well as RNA interference (RNAi) and chemical library screens, permitting the rapid testing of hypotheses related to disease mechanisms and the exploration of new therapeutic routes a

Conserved genes act as modifiers of invertebrate SMN loss of function defects.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is caused by diminished function of the Survival of Motor Neuron (SMN) protein, but the molecular pathways critical for SMA pathology remain elusive. We have used genetic approaches in invertebrate models to identify conserved SMN loss of function modifier genes. Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans each have a single gene encoding a protein orthologous to human SMN; diminished function of these invertebrate genes causes lethality and neuromuscular defects. To find genes that modulate SMN function defects across species, two approaches were used. Fir

Natural female mating rate maximizes hatchling size in a marine invertebrate.

1. Males and females often differ in their optimal mating rates, resulting potentially in conflicts over remating. In species with separate sexes, females typically have a lower optimal mating rate than males, and can regulate contacts with males accordingly. The realized mating rate may therefore be closer to the female's optimum. In simultaneous hermaphrodites, however, it has been suggested that the intraindividual optimization between 'male' and 'female' interests generates more 'male'-driven mating rates. 2. In order to assess the consequences of variation in mating rate on 'female' repro

Kappa-bungarotoxin blocks nicotinic transmission at an identified invertebrate central synapse.

A comparison was made between the effects of kappa-bungarotoxin and alpha-bungarotoxin upon nicotinic cholinergic transmission at an identified synapse (the cereal afferent, giant interneurone 2 synapse) in the central nervous system of the cockroach (Periplaneta americana). kappa-Bungarotoxin, a snake venom kappa-neurotoxin, completely blocked nicotinic unitary excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) and evoked composite EPSPs when applied at a concentration of 1.0 x 10(-7) moll-1. No recovery was observed after a 2h wash in normal saline. kappa-Bungarotoxin produced a decrease in acetylch

Ecotoxicological effects of drilling cuttings waste from oil wells: sensitivity of soil invertebrates and plants.

This study assessed the ecotoxicological effects of drilling cuttings waste (DCW) generated from offshore oil exploration, focusing on samples derived from both pre-salt and post-salt geological layers. A multi-species approach was employed, including avoidance and reproduction tests with five species of soil invertebrates (Eisenia andrei (Oligochaeta: Lumbricidae), Enchytraeus crypticus (Oligochaeta: Enchytraeidae), Folsomia candida, Proisotoma minuta (Collembola: Isotomidae), and Sinella curviseta (Collembola: Entomobryidae)), and growth and germination tests with two plant species (Lactuca

Climate change and polar marine invertebrates: life-history responses in a warmer, high CO2 world.

Polar marine invertebrates serve as bellwethers for species vulnerabilities in the face of changing climate at high latitudes of the Earth. Ocean acidification, warming/heatwaves, freshening, sea ice retreat and productivity change are challenges for polar species. Adaptations to life in cold water with intensely seasonal productivity has shaped species traits at both poles. Polar species have life histories often characterised as K-strategist or K-selected (e.g. slow growth and development, larval hypometabolism) that make them sensitive to climate stress and altered seasonal productivity. Assessment of potentially toxic element contamination in commercially harvested invertebrates from the Beibu Gulf, China.

Marine pollutants, especially potentially toxic elements (PTEs), increasingly threaten the ecological environment and fishery resources of the Beibu Gulf due to their bioaccumulative nature, toxicity, and persistence. However, the occurrences of multiple PTEs in marine invertebrates within this region remains unclear. Hence, a total of 18 species of commercially harvested invertebrates (shrimp, crab, cephalopod, shellfish, and sea cucumber) were collected from the Beibu Gulf, and the concentrations of nine important PTEs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were examined. A Novel Sesterterpenoid, Petrosaspongin and γ-Lactone Sesterterpenoids with Leishmanicidal Activity from Okinawan Marine Invertebrates.

Leishmaniasis is a major public health problem, especially affecting vulnerable populations in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease is endemic in 90 countries, and with millions of people at risk, it is seen as one of the ten most neglected tropical diseases. Current treatments face challenges such as high toxicity, side effects, cost, and growing drug resistance. There is an urgent need for safer, affordable treatments, especially for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), the most common form. Marine invertebrates have long been resources for discovering bioactive compounds such as sesterter

Competition for space among sessile marine invertebrates: changes in HSP70 expression in two Pacific cnidarians.

The role of stress proteins-either constitutive (HSC) or inducible (HSP)-of the HSP70 family in intra- and interspecific competition for space was examined in two sessile Pacific cnidarians. Anthopleura elegantissima, an intertidal anemone, and Corynactis californica, a subtidal corallimorpharian, express HSP70 in the absence of apparent physical stress. HSP70 protein expression is concentrated in the tentacles of A. elegantissima when the animal is exposed to contact with other benthic organisms. Under the same conditions, however, HSP concentrations are similar in the body and tentacles of C

Same-Sex Sexual Behavior in Invertebrates: A Systematic Synthesis of Prevalence, Study Type, and Interpretation.

Same-sex sexual behavior in invertebrates includes interactions such as courtship, mounting, copulation, tandem running, and pair formation between individuals of the same sex. We conducted a systematic synthesis of 222 primary studies and 12 reviews and found published evidence of SSB in approximately 207 species spanning arthropods, mollusks, annelids, echinoderms, nematodes, and flatworms. Although most reports involved insects (approximately 89%), standardized reporting rates suggest this bias reflects research effort rather than true biological prevalence. Observations came from field stu

Two decades of spatial and temporal pesticide risk to non-target invertebrates in England farmlands.

Pesticide impact assessment methods provide relevant approaches to quantifying risks to non-target terrestrial biodiversity in agricultural systems. Here we develop such an approach through combined analysis of pesticide usage, cropping patterns and ecotoxicological hazard datasets to generate a temporal series of maps (1994-2016) of the spatial risk of pesticides for invertebrates in England. Using data for 179 insecticides, fungicides and herbicides applied on arable crops, we assessed how pesticide risk for bees, earthworms, springtails, parasitic wasps and lacewings varied in space and tim

Field mixtures of currently used pesticides in agricultural soil pose a risk to soil invertebrates.

Massive use of pesticides in conventional agriculture leads to accumulation in soil of complex mixtures, triggering questions about their potential ecotoxicological risk. This study assessed cropland soils containing pesticide mixtures sampled from conventional and organic farming systems at La Cage and Mons, France. The conventional agricultural field soils contained more pesticide residues (11 and 17 versus 3 and 11, respectively) and at higher concentrations than soils from organic fields (mean 6.6 and 10.5 versus 0.2 and 0.6 μg kg-1, respectively), including systemic insecticides belonging

Predator-prey interactions of terrestrial invertebrates are determined by predator body size and species identity.

Predator-prey interactions shape ecosystems and can help maintain biodiversity. However, for many of the earth's most biodiverse and abundant organisms, including terrestrial arthropods, these interactions are difficult or impossible to observe directly with traditional approaches. Based on previous theory, it is likely that predator-prey interactions for these organisms are shaped by a combination of predator traits, including body size and species-specific hunting strategies. In this study, we combined diet DNA metabarcoding data of 173 individual invertebrate predators from nine species (a

Mercury concentrations in fish and invertebrates of the Finger Lakes in central New York, USA.

Deleterious health effects in humans and wildlife are associated with the consumption of fish contaminated by mercury (Hg). This study was conducted to assess Hg concentrations in biota of the Finger Lakes (New York, USA), a region where fisheries are important for the economy but where no assessment of the drivers of food web Hg dynamics exists to date. Additionally, this region is of interest for the study of Hg bioaccumulation because of the importance of agricultural land cover, which can affect lake trophic status and thus the bioavailability of methyl Hg (MeHg). The study objectives were

Therapeutic arthropods and other, largely terrestrial, folk-medicinally important invertebrates: a comparative survey and review.

Traditional healing methods involving hundreds of insect and other invertebrate species are reviewed. Some of the uses are based on the tenet of "similia similibus" (let likes be cured by likes), but not all non-conventional health promoting practices should be dismissed as superstition or wishful thinking, for they have stood the test of time. Two questions are addressed: how can totally different organ systems in a human possibly benefit from extracts, potions, powders, secretions, ashes, etc. of a single species and how can different target organs, e.g. bronchi, lungs, the urinary bladder,

Contents and risk assessment of heavy metals in marine invertebrates from Korean coastal fish markets.

The concentrations of the heavy metals cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), chromium, silver, nickel, copper, and zinc in the edible portions of 105 marine invertebrates representing 16 mollusk and crustacean species were accurately determined to evaluate their hazard for human consumption. The samples were collected in 2011 from major fish markets on the coast of Korea and analyzed for Hg using a direct Hg analyzer and for other metals using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Estimated dietary exposure (EDE) was determined, and a risk assessment was made of the heavy metals to pr
