Clinical and Pathological Aspects of Systemic Isospora Infection in Blue-crowned Laughing Thrushes (Garrulax courtoisi) at Jersey Zoo.

Based on a review of species mortalities, systemic Isospora species was identified as the primary cause of death in 22% (19 of 87) of blue-crowned laughing thrushes (BCLTs; Garrulax courtoisi) at the Jersey Zoo between 1997 and 2016. Fifty-eight percent of the affected birds were between 1 and 2 years old, and in 89% of cases, death occurred between August and December. Abnormal clinical findings in BCLTs with Isospora species infections included hepatomegaly and pectoral muscle myositis in 79% of the cases. The results of diagnostic blood testing in 90% of infected BCLTs 30 days before death

Isospora belli infection after isolated intestinal transplant.

Isospora belli is a protozoan that only affects humans, after ingestion of Isospora's oocysts. Immunocompetent patients usually do not develop the infection. Immunocompromised hosts may have profuse diarrhea with other gastrointestinal symptoms. Treatment is based on trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. In 2006 we performed an isolated intestinal transplantation in a patient with ultra-short bowel syndrome. Neither rejection nor clinical problems occurred after transplant, but signs of intestinal inflammation were seen in every protocol biopsy starting at the first month post transplant. Almost 3 mo

Case report: Isospora belli infection in a renal transplant recipent.

Isospora belli, an opportunistic protozoon, is one of the most commonly recognized causes of diarrhea in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Infection is acquired through fecal contaminated food or water, and generally diagnosed by examination of stool and/or duodenum biopsy specimens with acid-fast staining. Here, we present an uncommon case, chronic diarrhea caused by I. belli infection in a patient who is a renal transplant recipient.

Lectin histochemistry for glycoconjugates in the small intestines of piglets naturally infected with Isospora suis.

Composition of glycoconjugates was examined in small intestines naturally infected with Isospora suis in preweaned pigs by use of 21 biotinylated-labeled lectins with avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method. As compared with control pig, staining of 18 lectins altered in jejunal villus brush border and goblet cells of pigs naturally infected with I. suis. These results indicate that I. suis infection alters carbohydrate residues on the jejunal intestines.

Cryptosporidium hominis and Isospora belli diarrhea in travelers returning from West Africa.

Travel-related diarrhea is common among tourists to developing countries. We report two cases of diarrhea due to Cryptosporidium hominis and Isospora belli, respectively, in a child and an adult returning from Africa, without other associated microorganisms. We emphasize the need to detect underdiagnosed coccidiosis in diarrheic travelers with specific methods.

Severe Isospora (Cystoisospora) belli Diarrhea Preceding the Diagnosis of Human T-Cell-Leukemia-Virus-1-Associated T-Cell Lymphoma.

Isospora (Cystoisospora) belli diarrhea can sometimes be fulminant in immunocompromised patients. It is endemic in tropical and subtropical areas, and sporadic episodes have been reported in nonendemic areas in nursing homes, day-care centers, and psychiatric institutions. We describe isosporiasis in an HIV-negative Sudanese-American female who presented with a debilitating diarrheal illness and profound weight loss. Isospora belli was detected in her stool by modified acid-fast staining. Serologic testing was negative for HIV but positive for HTLV-1 infection. Treatment with TMP-SMZ led to im

Isospora tiedetopetei n. sp. (Chromista: Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from black-goggled tanagers Trichothraupis melanops (Vieillot, 1818) (Passeriformes: Thraupidae: Tachyphoninae) in South America.

Black-goggled tanagers Trichothraupis melanops (Vieillot, 1818) are passerine birds commonly observed in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Argentina and Paraguay. Tanagers are among the passerines with the highest prevalence and density of coccidian parasites, mainly due to their frugivorous feeding habits that favor fecal-oral transmission. In this context, the current study identifies a new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 parasitizing black-goggled tanagers captured in the Itatiaia National Park, a protected area with a high degree of vulnerability in Southeastern Brazil. Cystoisospora belli, liver disease and hypothesis on the life cycle.

Cystoisospora belli causes chronic diarrhoea, acalculous cholecystitis, cholangiopathy and disseminated cystoisosporosis in patients with AIDS. Clinical manifestations and histological stages during C. belli infection in a patient with AIDS and liver disease were described. It was possible to identify sporozoite-like structures in the villus epithelium of the duodenum, close to the vascularization that underlies the basal membrane and unizoite tissue cysts near to the vascularization in the lamina propria. Unizoite tissue cysts were found inside of sinusoids in the liver communicating with the
