Usefulness of MRI and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI for differential diagnosis of simple bone cysts from true cysts in the jaw.

INTRODUCTION: It can be difficult to differentiate simple bone cysts (SBCs) from true cysts in the jaw when these lesions appear unilocular. The present study reports the MR imaging of subjects with SBCs and describes the diagnostic value of the MRI findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten subjects with SBCs in the jaw were examined using MRI. T1- and T2-weighted images (T1WI, T2WI) were obtained, and contrast-enhanced images and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) were acquired. RESULTS: In all cases, the contrast-enhanced T1WI acquired approximately 6 minutes after the administration of Gd

Three-dimensional changes in mandibular jaw cysts following decompression surgery: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective cohort study primarily assessed three-dimensional changes in mandibular jaw cysts over time following decompression surgery. Secondary aims included evaluating factors potentially affecting the monthly reduction rates and assessing intra- and interexaminer reliability in the measurements. METHODS: Patients who underwent decompression therapy for mandibular cysts and histopathological diagnosis were included. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans obtained before decompression surgery (baseline CBCT) and prior to enucleation surgery (follow-up CBCT) were anal

Conservative surgical treatment of the jaw cysts in children: Case study of five patients.

AIMS: Conservative treatment of jaw cysts establishes low surgical complication risk and protects vital anatomical structures such as inferior alveolar nerve, maxillary sinus and permanent tooth germs. Marsupialization and decompression have been widely used in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of the conservative treatment of jaw cysts in five children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article presents case series of marsupialization in jaw cysts associated with impacted teeth in five children. A total of nine impacted teeth within the cystic lesions were observed. RESU

MR proton relaxivities of some ions, albumin, and cholesterol added to odontogenic jaw cysts.

The relaxation rates (1/T(1) and 1/T(2)) in cysts have already been analyzed in terms of materials such as albumin, cholesterol, manganese, iron, and copper. However, the relaxivities of these materials have not been determined yet. In this work, five sets containing the ions, albumin, and cholesterol were prepared by addition of increasing concentration of one material to each set. The relaxation times in these sets were measured by MRI, and the relaxation rates were fitted versus concentrations. The slopes of the fits were used as relaxivities. The (r(1), r(2)) values of manganese, iron, and

Relative incidence of odontogenic tumors and oral and jaw cysts in a Canadian population.

The diagnoses of 40,000 consecutively accessioned oral biopsies from the Oral Pathology Diagnostic Service, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, were reviewed. All odontogenic neoplasm, neoplasm-like lesions (tumors), and true cysts of the oral tissues and jaws were listed. Clinical data were reviewed, and microscopic diagnoses were confirmed for cases in which diagnoses were ambiguous. Records of all cases were examined to identify distant referrals that were not representative of the study population. Of a total of 445 (1.11%) odontogenic tumors, 392 (0.98%) were lesions from patie

[Long-term experiences with surgery of large jaw cysts by the Nasteff-Rosenthal method].

Of a total of almost 200 patients operated upon by means of the Nasteff-Rosenthal method during the years 1962-1972, 80 could be re-examined. The results obtained show that this operating method stands the comparison with other techniques and that it may be recommended further on for the treatment of great cysts in the mandible as well as in the maxillae.

Cytokeratin expression patterns in jaw cyst linings with metaplastic epithelium.

BACKGROUND: Cytokeratin (CK) expression patterns have been studied in numerous intact and diseased oral tissues. However, CK expression in metaplastic squamous cells has not been explored in depth and the origin of metaplastic epithelial linings of the jaw cysts has not been sufficiently investigated. METHODS: We examined CK expression in 46 postoperative maxillary cysts (POMCs) which were lined with pseudostratified columnar cells only, columnar and squamous cells, and squamous cells only, in 13, 30 and 3 cases, respectively. RESULTS: The expression of CK8, CK13 and CK18 were observed in 39

Solitary bone cyst of the jaws: radiographic review of 44 cases.

Solitary bone cyst is a radiolucent lesion classified as a pseudocyst with a variety of reported shapes including round, oval, and irregular. In the long bones, a truncated cone shape has been described, and the fallen trabecula sign is seen in association with pathologic fracture. The purpose of this study was to classify and document the various shapes, to describe the width versus height dimensions of jaw SBCs, to determine the identifying signs of trauma, and to evaluate other reported radiographic features. Radiographs of 44 SBCs in 43 patients were studied. Sixty-four percent demonstrate

Aneurysmal bone cysts of the jaws: a case study and review of the literature.

Although first documented in 1958, the definitive explanation of the etiology and pathogenesis of the aneurysmal bone cyst has yet to be elucidated. This may be attributable to the relatively small number of cases contained within the literature. The following report and review of the pertinent literature is presented to add to the current body of knowledge on the subject.

Enucleation combined with guided bone regeneration in small and medium-sized odontogenic jaw cysts.

BACKGROUND: The odontogenic jaw cyst is a cavity containing liquid, semifluid or gaseous components, with the development of the disease. In recent years, with the rapid development of oral materials and the transformation of treatment of jaw cysts, more options are available for treatment of postoperative bone defect of jaw cysts. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) places biomaterials in the bone defect, and then uses biofilm to separate the proliferative soft tissue and the slow-growing bone tissue to maintain the space for bone regeneration, which is widely used in the field of implantology. [Histoenzymological characteristics of epithelial cells in oral mucosal lesions and jaw cysts. Diagnostic significance].

An histoenzymological study (including oxidative enzymes, diaphorases, acid and alkaline phosphatases and naphtolesterases) of 41 biopsy and operation specimens revealed interesting factors in the diagnosis of some lesions of the buccal mucosa, and also of cysts and ameloblastomas of the jaw. When compared with normal buccal mucosa and epidermis, the enzymatic activities found in the oral lesions, fell into three different types. In non dysplasic leukoplakia, enzymatic activities were found that were similar to those of the epidermis (high oxidative activities, particularly prominent in basal
