Ameloblastoma is a rare odontogenic neoplasm of the jaw. It usually behaves as a benign, slow growing tumour of the oral cavity with a high recurrence rate, especially when it is inadequately resected. A small proportion of ameloblastomas metastasize to distant organs, with lungs representing the most common site of metastatic spread. In this report, we present the case of a middle-aged man with two pulmonary nodules and a history of mandibular ameloblastoma excised 10 years prior to this radiological finding. Following resection and histopathological analysis of the lung lesion, a diagnosis o

Odontomas are usually one of the most common odontogenic tumors of the jaw and are perhaps more accurately defined as a hamartoma than a true neoplasm. It is asymptomatic, nonaggressive, slow growing, and benign nature. They are considered to be the malformations of the dental tissue and can sometimes interfere with the eruption of the associated tooth leading to its impaction or delayed eruption. Complex odontomas in primary teeth are rare and unusually diagnosed before the second decade of life. This article aims to present the case of a child with complex odontoma and its effective treatmen

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma (PIOSCC) is a rare malignant neoplasm derived from odontogenic epithelial remnants in the central jaw bone. Most PIOSCCs originate from odontogenic cysts with a nonkeratinized epithelial lining, especially from radicular/residual and dentigerous cysts. There have been few reports of PIOSCCs derived from the odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), particularly those describing pathological features at the initial stage. The diagnosis of PIOSCC is difficult and based on exclusion of other carcinomas, including metastatic tumors from other primary sites. Here, w

The clinical and radiographic features of gigantic dense bone islands of the jaw were reviewed in 21 subjects to better determine the pathogenesis of this condition. Most of the islands were asymptomatic. They showed a striking predilection for occurrence in the premolar to molar region of the mandible. The greatest dimension of gigantic dense bone islands measured on panoramic radiographs ranged from 2.5 to 7.0 cm, and they were most commonly structureless radiopaque areas. None showed bony expansion buccolingually, nor did they displace adjacent teeth or bony anatomic structures. It is concl

BACKGROUND: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of oral lesions has not been widely utilized for diagnosis due to rarity and diversity of lesions, peculiar anatomy of maxillofacial region, difficulty in aspirating these lesions, and limited experience. Aim of this study was to determine the role of FNAC in the diagnosis of oral and jaw swellings.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and forty two patients underwent FNAC over a period of 7 years (2007-2013), of which 127 (89.4%) aspirates were diagnostic. Histopathologic correlation was available in 83 cases and diagnostic accuracy of FNAC wa

Cystic lesions of the jaws comprise a spectrum of inflammatory, developmental and neoplastic changes that can clinically appear strikingly similar. Squamous cell metaplasia due to superinfection can further blur the histologic hallmarks of the individual lesions. In this article an overview of the most important differential diagnoses and the novelties of the latest World Health Organisation (WHO) classification on head and neck tumours released in early 2017 is provided. In contrast to the previous edition, odontogenic cysts have been re-introduced and several changes in terminology and taxon

INTRODUCTION: Organised hematoma (OH) in the para-nasal sinus and nasal cavity is a rare, non-neoplastic, benign disease which can be locally aggressive. In clinical practice, OH is easily misdiagnosed as malignancy and over-treated.
CASE SUMMARY: These patients with OH had a common history of malignant neoplasms post-radiotherapy, including two cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and one case of tonsil cancer with jaw osteosarcoma. All of the patients presented with symptoms of epistaxis and blood-tinged rhinorrhea. All of the patients received endoscopic endonasal surgery under navigation.

Between the 2 of january and the 31 of december 1985 there was done a study of 215 children in ages between 0-15 years in the Department of Oral Diagnosis of the Ibadan University Hospital, where they were external patients with oral infections/swelling. The male-female proportion was 1.3:1. 42.33% were from 0 to 5. 70.24% belonged to the lowest social group of the community, with a high risk of oral-facial infections. The situation of their oral hygiene didn't reflect their social and economical state, and meant no predisposition to infection. The common infections were alveolar abscess, acut

Chondrosarcomas of the head and neck represent a small percentage and differ in their treatment and prognosis compared with chondrosarcomas elsewhere. Four different cases of chondrosarcoma are presented. One arose intracranially, two in the jaws, one of which followed irradiation for a retinoblastoma, and the last represents chondrosarcomatous transformation in cervical spine Paget disease which is exceptionally rare. Computer tomography (CT) plays an important role in delineating the extent of the tumor with visualization of bony destruction, associated soft-tissue mass, and calcification, i

OBJECTIVE: Mandibular tumors in the pediatric population are rare. These malignancies are variable in their histology, and combined with their rarity, has made it difficult to describe their clinical course, and treatment guidelines. The aim of this paper is to describe the experience of Boston Children's Hospital, a pediatric tertiary referral center, with treating malignant mandibular malignancies, as well as provide multi-disciplinary team approach in managing this clinical entity.
METHODS: A retrospective search was performed for mandibular malignancies in pediatric patients between 1995

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) is an uncommon benign cystic neoplasm of the jaw that develops from the odontogenic epithelium. Invasion into the maxillary sinus by a CCOT is not a typical, and the recurrence of the cystic variant of CCOT in the posterior maxilla is rare. This report describes a recurrent CCOT occupying most of the maxillary sinus of a 24-year-old male patient. As a treatment, marsupialization was carried out as a means of decompression, and the involved teeth were all endodontically treated. Afterward, surgical enucleation was performed. The size of the lesion cont

Malignant mesothelioma predominantly arises from the serosal surfaces of the pleural or peritoneal cavity. There is currently no effective standard treatment for mesothelioma and the prognosis for patients is poor; the majority of patients with malignant mesothelioma succumb between 12 and 17 months following diagnosis. The association of all forms of malignant mesothelioma with asbestos exposure has been well documented. However, metastasis to the oral gingiva is rare, as only four cases have previously been reported; two cases of metastasis to the tongue and four cases to the jaw bone. In th

Dentigerous cyst (DC) is one of the most common odontogenic cysts of the jaws and rarely recurs. On the other hand, keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT), formerly known as odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), is considered a benign unicystic or multicystic intraosseous neoplasm and one of the most aggressive odontogenic lesions presenting relatively high recurrence rate and a tendency to invade adjacent tissue. Two cases of these odontogenic lesions occurring in children are presented. They were very similar in clinical and radiographic characteristics, and both were treated by marsupialization. The

OBJECTIVE: Ameloblastoma is a benign, locally aggressive neoplasm of the jaws. Accurate diagnosis is important for providing timely treatment and reducing the risk of recurrence and local destruction. The criteria for diagnosing ameloblastoma are well-defined, however, rare cases have been observed with a multicystic/unicystic plexiform pattern that lacks pathognomonic histologic features, causing difficulties in differentiating them from less aggressive jaw lesions. Our main objective was to review these plexiform ameloblastomas that could prove challenging for pathologists on incisional biop

PURPOSE: Ameloblastoma (AM), a frequently encountered odontogenic epithelial neoplasm, demonstrates complex molecular pathogenesis involving dysregulation of cellular signaling networks. This study investigated the clinicopathological significance of Notch1 signaling pathway activation and its downstream effector CyclinD1 in jaw ameloblastoma progression.
METHODS: Immunohistochemical profiling was conducted on 66 archived AM specimens and 23 normal oral mucosa (NOM) controls. Protein localization patterns and expression intensities were systematically analyzed using chi-square tests, Fisher's

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a non-metastasizing neoplasm of mesenchymal origin, arising in the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. When regarding the whole spectrum of differential diagnoses for osteolytic jaw lesions, OM constitutes a benign tumor rarely located in the maxilla. Radiographically, displacement of teeth and frequent involvement of the sinus will be found with advanced maxillary OM. The tumor can be removed by means of several techniques, ranging from conservative measures to extended surgical procedures that differ according to type of bone resection and reconstruction of the defect

Osteosarcomas are primary malignant bone tumours in which mesenchymal cells produce osteoid. It is generally the most common malignant bone neoplasm, although lesions of the jaw are uncommon. Osteosarcoma of the jaw (JOS) presents a lower incidence of metastasis and a better prognosis than osteosarcoma of the long bones. However, patients with JOS can exhibit advanced tumours, mainly when early diagnosis is not performed. This article reports on a case of an advanced osteosarcoma of the maxilla. A 38-year-old woman was referred for evaluation and treatment of recurrent fibrous dysplasia of the

Odontogenic tumors constitute a group of heterogeneous lesions of benign and malignant neoplasms with variable aggressiveness. Ameloblastomas are a group of benign but locally invasive neoplasms that occur in the jaws and are derived from epithelial elements of the tooth-forming apparatus. We previously described orosomucoid-1 protein expression in odontogenic myxomas. However, whether orosomucoid-1 is expressed in other odontogenic tumors remains unknown. Since orosomucoid-1 belongs to a group of acute-phase proteins and has many functions in health and disease, we identified and analyzed oro
