Supporting young adults experiencing psychosis with their employment: A qualitative exploration of occupational therapists' experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Young adults experiencing psychosis have the same plans for work and future careers as their peers; however, many find themselves unable to participate. While there is research available about interventions used to support employment of young adults with psychosis, there is little evidence regarding the experience of occupational therapists working in this field and the vocational rehabilitation interventions and practices they use. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was used to explore the perspectives of occupational therapy practitioners

[Does unemployment cause illness? A review of the status of knowledge of the correlation between unemployment, physical and psychological health risks].

Unemployment appears to be a complex condition that burdens the individuals affected in multiple ways both at job loss and in long-term unemployment. To a lesser extent unemployment may also relieve the stressors and risks associated with the place of work. The scope and nature of the burden experienced depends on individual factors, such as mental stability and coping resources, on economic, social and cultural factors, such as availability of alternative roles, system of social security and social context. In the industralized countries, especially in the Federal Republic of Germany, financi

NHS survey: impact of conflict resolution training on working lives of healthcare staffs.

The Consumer Fraud and Security Management Service (CFSMS) is responsible for security and safety for the 1600 hospitals and other health services of England's National Health Service (NHS). Between June 2004 and May 2005, in order to counter violence directed at nurses, other caregivers and employees, SMS provided conflict resolution training (CRT) for some 250,000 NHS healthcare workers. The survey, conducted a year after the training was completed, sought to quantify the extent to which receiving CRT improved staffers' ability to deal with verbal and physical abuse. It is reprinted with NHS

[Technique of Arterial Anastomosis].

The important point in vascular anastomosis is anastomosis with a secure suture and prevention of thrombosis. Uncertainty in sutures can cause bleeding from the anastomotic site and post operative pseudoaneurysm formation. In addition, the failure of the antithrombotic function causes early occlusion of the anastomotic site due to thrombus formation, causing intimal thickening and causing stenosis of the anastomotic site. Vascular anastomosis must be performed with attention to the property and site of the blood vessel, the method of graft formation, and the procedure of suturing. Training is

Intentions and actions towards leaving healthcare work since COVID-19: group-based trajectory analyses in the UK-REACH cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Retaining healthcare workers is often challenging. We studied predictors and patterns of leaving or wanting to leave healthcare work over time (attrition intentions and/or actions) in a UK cohort. DESIGN: Using five waves of longitudinal data (2020-2024), we performed group-based trajectory analysis to identify subgroups of healthcare workers with similar patterns of attrition intentions and/or actions over time. We described the characteristics of individuals in each trajectory, and used age-, sex- and occupation-adjusted multinomial logistic regression to identify predictors of

Impact of HIV diagnosis on job separation in Japanese employed men: a retrospective matched cohort study using an administrative claims database.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) have been reported to have higher unemployment rates than the general population. However, most previous studies were cross-sectional and lacked appropriate controls. To assess the impact of HIV diagnosis on job separation, we conducted a retrospective matched cohort study using a Japanese claims database of employed men. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective matched cohort study of newly diagnosed male PLWH and non-PLWH controls using a Japanese administrative claims database mainly covering employees of larger enterprises. PLWH were matched 1:5 with

Carpal tunnel syndrome and its relation to occupation: a systematic literature review.

OBJECTIVES: To assess occupational risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), we conducted a systematic literature review. METHODS: We identified relevant primary research from two major reviews in the 1990s and supplemented this material by a systematic search of the MEDLINE and EMBASE biomedical databases from the start of the electronic record to 1 January 2005. Reports were obtained and their bibliographies checked for other relevant publications. From each paper, we abstracted a standardized set of information on study populations, exposure contrasts and estimates of effect. RESULTS

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders and contributing factors among social security workers in Dar es Salaam: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a significant public health problem for individuals engaged in tasks involving repetitive upper limb movements and extended computer use, including those working in the social security sector. The International Labor Organization (ILO) has listed musculoskeletal disorders as an occupational disease that requires preventive measures in workplaces. However, there is limited information in the context of Tanzania. Therefore, this study aimed to address this knowledge gap, focusing on the magnitude and risk factors of MSDs among social

Among Transitioning Veterans with Service-Connected Disabilities: Who Benefits Most from Career Coaching?

U.S. service members transitioning from the military face formidable challenges to securing meaningful employment matching their preferences and qualifications. Despite diverse employment services, many veterans settle for dead-end jobs. This study examined personal characteristics predicting successful employment outcomes. In a secondary analysis of a controlled trial assessing 2-year employment outcomes for 205 transitioning veterans with service-connected disabilities participating in a career coaching program, multivariate regression analyses were conducted to identify personal characteris

Economic Abuse of Women in Intimate Relationships in Ghana: Consequences and Coping Strategies.

Economic abuse is a significant gender-based problem in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa, but few studies explore the consequences of this type of abuse on women's lives and their coping strategies. This study examined the narratives of 16 Ghanaian women in intimate relationships who experienced economic abuse in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Upper East regions of Ghana. Results indicate economic abuse negatively affected female survivors' jobs, businesses, and food security and led to physical violence and adverse health implications. Some women coped by relying on external family networks, rel

(Re)Entering the workforce after imprisonment: A new perspective on voluntary disclosure of criminal history and job-search assistance.

Securing employment support remains elusive for most formerly incarcerated jobseekers, with the majority still unemployed years after their release-nearly five times the national average in the general population (Melhorn et al., 2024). Research indicates that these difficulties may arise from negative stereotypes about formerly incarcerated individuals' moral character and competence, limiting the job-search assistance they receive from others. Integrating theory and research on criminal stigma and impression formation processes, we suggest that disclosing their criminal history with (vs. wit

Task-specific dystonia in hairdressers: a questionnaire survey and review of the literature.

Hairdresser dystonia is one of the occupational dystonias and task-specific movement disorders occurring as a result of long-term repetitive cutting with scissors. The task-specific dystonia manifests itself as a loss of voluntary motor control during extensive practice of cutting requiring a high level of technical proficiency. The prevalence rate of hairdresser dystonia is not well-known worldwide. A questionnaire regarding dystonia was prepared for hairdressers. After sending the questionnaires to 800 hairdressers by direct mail, 134 answers were received by mail. Five of the 134 were suspe

Association Between Precarious Employment and Disability in Adults Over 50 Years of Age in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The risk of disability increases when workers perform a precarious job, in unsafe conditions and without social benefits or any type of contract. The objective of the study was to identify the relationship between exposure to unstable employment and the prevalence of disability in men and women over 50 years of age. METHODS: Secondary analysis of the 2018 round of the National Survey on Health and Aging (ENASEM). A precarious employment variable was constructed using historical information on the main job; work activities were classified as cognitive or manual. Disability was asse

Dropout, Autonomy and Reintegration in Spain: A Study of the Life of Young Women on Temporary Release.

UNLABELLED: This study analyses the psycho-educational and social paths of women prisoners after the time they drop out of school as minors, based on different variables related to autonomy and their preparedness to face temporary release. METHODS: Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyse a national sample of 310 women prisoners (30.1% of the population) in 31 prisons through a mixed-mode questionnaire and interview. We analysed the significant association of variables related to dropout and obtained a log-linear model that relates dropout to recidivism and Roma culture. Work

'The players are the focus, it's never spoken about as coaches': Perceived factors influencing the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches.

Elite-level coaches operate within highly demanding, pressurised and unstable high-performance environments that can increase their risk of mental ill-health. This qualitative study investigated perceived factors influencing the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches using an ecological systems approach. Fourteen coaches (men = 12, women = 2) from a range of individual and team sports participated in a single semi-structured interview. Five overarching themes perceived to influence the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches were developed through reflexive thematic analysis,

Exploring staff experiences: A case for redesigning the response to aggression and violence in the emergency department.

INTRODUCTION: A Code Black is the coordinated response by healthcare staff and security to an act or threat of verbal and physical aggression or violence perpetrated by a patient, family member or visitor towards healthcare staff within a hospital setting. Behavioural disturbance is often verbally de-escalated by staff. However, as a last resort physical and/or chemical restraint may be necessary. Reports show that there is an increasing number of violent incidents in Emergency Departments (ED), emphasising the importance of staff training for Code Black events. This research examines the resp
