Effect of Immediate versus Early Skin-to-Skin Contact after Cesarean Section on Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes within the First 24 Hours: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: In Türkiye and moderate-income developing countries, skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is not a routine practice and is often neglected, especially after a cesarean. AIM: The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of immediate and early SSC after cesarean on maternal and neonatal parameters in the first 24 hours. METHODS: This quasi-experimental clinical study involved 92 mother-neonate pairs. Uninterrupted 40-minute SSC was implemented within the first 5 minutes in the immediate SSC (ISSC) group and within the first hour after cesarean in the early SSC (ESSC) group. Routine ca

Improving Time to First Parental Positive Touch and Skin-to-Skin Hold for Preterm Infants: A Quality Improvement Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Parental positive touch (PPT) and skin-to-skin (STS) improve bonding and decrease stress in parents and neonates. PURPOSE: We sought to reduce the time to first PPT and STS for infants born <32 weeks by June 2023. We aimed to have 90% of infants to receive PPT by 24 hours of life (HOL), 75% of infants to be held STS by 36 HOL, and 100% by 1 week. METHODS: Three Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles were completed. Interventions included parent advisor-led handouts/room displays, staff education with parent testimony and simulations, and kangaroo-a-thons. Preferred language, race/ethnic

Impact of the H-HOPE multisensory behavioural intervention plus Kangaroo Mother Care on early growth in preterm infants in Malawi.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of the Hospital-to-Home: Optimizing the Premature Infant’s Environment (H-HOPE) intervention for early infant growth, we compared mother-preterm infant dyads receiving both H-HOPE and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) with those receiving KMC only, the standard of care for all preterm infants, at a single hospital in Malawi. METHOD: A prospective quasi-experimental study design was used at Zomba Central Hospital. Because the intervention took place in a single, large room without any auditory or visual privacy, the enrolment of the two study conditions (KMC only control

Effects of skin-to-skin contact on mental health outcomes in the parents of full-term newborns: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: The postpartum period can be emotionally challenging for parents, with documented levels of anxiety, stress, and depression. While the benefits of skin-to-skin contact (SSC) are well-known, its impact on the mental health of parents of full-term newborns has been less studied. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the effects of SSC in mental health outcomes in the parents of full-term newborns. METHODS: In this systematic review, a comprehensive search was conducted to identify randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing SSC versus no SSC and assessing mental health outcomes. Meta-analy

An Implementation Science Study of a Heat-Producing Wrap to Complement KMC in Rwanda.

Background: Neonatal hypothermia is a major cause of preventable morbidity and mortality, especially among the world's poorest newborns. A heat-producing wrap is necessary when kangaroo mother care (KMC) is insufficient or unavailable, yet there is little published research on such wraps. The Dream Warmer is a wrap designed to complement KMC and has been extensively studied in formal research settings but not in real-world conditions. Objectives: We used implementation science methodology to understand the safety, effectiveness, and functionality of the Dream Warmer (hereafter, "Warmer"); its

Study on the value of KMC combined with blue light irradiation in improving the therapeutic effect of neonatal jaundice.

Neonatal jaundice is a common problem that affects newborns. We aim to investigate the effect of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) combined with blue-light irradiation on enhancing the therapeutic effect in the treatment of neonatal jaundice. From May 2020 to August 2022, 89 neonates with pathological jaundice and their mothers were selected as participants. All neonates received blue-light irradiation. The participants were divided into two groups: 46 neonates cared for by KMC as the research group (RG) and 43 neonates receiving routine nursing as the control group (CG). The first lactation time, fi

Efficacy of skin-to-skin vs. cloth-to-cloth contact for thermoregulation in low birth weight newborns: a randomized crossover trial.

OBJECTIVE: Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is effective to maintain normal temperature in low birth weight (LBW) newborns. However, there are several barriers related to privacy and space availability for its optimum utilization. We used cloth-to-cloth contact (CCC), i.e. placing the newborn in Kangaroo position without removing cloths as an innovative alternative to SSC to test its efficacy for thermoregulation and feasibility as compared to SSC in LBW newborns. METHODS: The newborns eligible for Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in step-down nursery were included in this randomized crossover trial. New

Supportive Care for Common Conditions in Small Vulnerable Newborns and Term Infants: The Evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Small vulnerable newborns (SVNs) are at an increased risk of early death and other morbidities. Essential interventions provided to SVN, and other high-risk newborns have been proven critical in improving their outcomes. We aimed to provide an update on the effectiveness and safety of these interventions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHOD: Following a comprehensive literature scope, we updated or reanalyzed LMIC-specific evidence for essential SVN care interventions. RESULTS: A total of 113 individual LMIC studies were identified. Most of them were of high risk

Skin-to-skin contact and delivery room practices: a longitudinal survey conducted in Piedmont and the Aosta Valley.

BACKGROUND: Sudden unexpected postnatal collapse of presumably healthy neonates during early skin-to-skin contact is a rare, yet recognized occurrence, associated with a high risk of mortality and morbidity. A survey was conducted in 2012 in 30 delivery wards throughout Piedmont and the Aosta Valley to evaluate the environmental and logistical aspects that could be linked to SUPC. The survey was again conducted in 2016 in 28 delivery wards in Piedmont and the Aosta Valley in order to evaluate organizational improvements introduced after ministerial indications and recommendations by the Italia

An analysis of the kangaroo care intervention using neonatal EEG complexity: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) promotes physiological stability and interaction between parents and infants. Temporal analyses of predictability in EEG-sleep time series can elucidate functional brain maturation between SSC and non-SSC cohorts at similar post-menstrual ages (PMAs). METHODS: Sixteen EEG-sleep studies were performed on eight preterm infants who received 8 weeks of SSC, and compared with two non-SSC cohorts at term (N=126) that include a preterm group corrected to term age and a full term group. Two time series measures of predictability were used for comparisons. RESULT

Determinants and neonatal outcomes of preeclampsia among women living with and without HIV at a tertiary hospital in Zambia: a review of medical records.

INTRODUCTION: pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy-specific condition that occurs after 20 weeks of gestation, is a significant public health problem. In the extant literature, there are still conflicting reports on whether Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and antiretroviral therapy (ART) affect preeclampsia rates. We, therefore, explored the determinants and neonatal outcomes of preeclampsia among pregnant women living with and without HIV. METHODS: we reviewed delivery registers and neonatal files from the 1st January 2018, to 30th of September 2019 for women who delivered at Women and Ne

What is stopping us? An implementation science study of kangaroo care in British Columbia's neonatal intensive care units.

BACKGROUND: The goal of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is to provide optimal care for preterm and sick infants while supporting their growth and development. The NICU environment can be stressful for preterm infants and often cannot adequately support their neurodevelopmental needs. Kangaroo Care (KC) is an evidence-based developmental care strategy that has been shown to be associated with improved short and long term neurodevelopmental outcomes for preterm infants. Despite evidence for best practice, uptake of the practice of KC in resource supported settings remains low. The aim of
