Medical oncology (Northwood, London, England)2010eng
A 70-year-old female with a long-standing history of kidney calculi presented with vague abdominal pain. Work-up included a CT and MRI of the kidneys. A mass was demonstrated in the superior pole of the left kidney. The mass was biopsied percutaneously under CT guidance. Pathology revealed a poorly differentiated carcinoma, but was inconclusive for a definitive cell type. The patient subsequently underwent a nephrectomy that revealed squamous cell carcinoma of the renal collecting system. She had an uneventful postoperative recovery. Chronic renal calculi pose a risk for the development of squ

Crystalluria can involve the kidney and lower urinary tract, can produce acute and chronic effects, and occurs in all mammalian species. Most commonly urinary crystals contain calcium. Numerous other endogenous and exogenous substances can produce crystalluria. Crystals are identified in kidneys of many species, up to 100% in certain rat strains. More severe renal disease (acute tubular necrosis and chronic renal disease) can be secondary to crystal accumulation, such as observed with melamine-cyanuric acid in cats and dogs. Aggregation of crystals leads to calculi that act as urothelial abras

BACKGROUND: Kidney stones in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease are common, regarded as the consequence of the combination of anatomic abnormality and metabolic risk factors. However, complete staghorn calculus is rare in polycystic kidney disease and predicts a gloomy prognosis of kidney. For general population, recent data showed metabolic factors were the dominant causes for staghorn calculus, but for polycystic kidney disease patients, the cause for staghorn calculus remained elusive.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of complete staghorm calculus in a polycystic

Background: Hydatid disease of urinary tract is most common in the kidney. In kidney, hydatid cysts are most commonly found in the renal parenchyma. Isolated hydatid cysts in the renal pelvis are extremely rare with only three cases reported in the literature. Case Presentation: We present a case of isolated hydatid cysts in the renal pelvis masquerading as renal pelvic calculi, which were diagnosed during surgery and confirmed on histopathology. Conclusion: Hydatid cysts can masquerade as renal calculi. Preoperative modalities may miss the correct diagnosis. Histopathology in suspected cases

This retrospective study was conducted to determine the prevalence of urinary calculi in the indigenous population of Saudi Arabia and compare it with expatriates of different nationalities working in Saudi Arabia with emphasis on the anatomic location of the calculi and the role of ultrasound in the detection and management. The study included 5371 patients (both sexes, mean age 36.6 years) examined by us from September 2004 to February 2008. The patients hailed from 30 countries, which included Bangladesh (42.3%), Pakistan (18.3%), Yemen (17.5%), India (6.5%), Sudan (3.4%), Saudi Arabia (2.8

Aspergilloma localised solely to the kidneys is very rare and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We present the case of a 35-year-old male with a background of urolithiasis, type II diabetes and chronic kidney disease, who was found to have isolated renal aspergilloma associated with obstructing uric acid renal tract calculi. After poor progress to clear the fungal infection and remaining stones with ureteroscopy, he was successfully treated by percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) to surgically remove fungal balls and calculi. Additionally, he was treated with peri-operative oral and

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy as monotherapy for staghorn calculus is not without complications. We describe a case in which, due to markedly reduced renal function following lithotripsy for a staghorn calculus, broken fragments of calculi forming steinstrasse became cemented together to form a solid calcified tube extending from the renal pelvis to the ureteric orifice. This resulted in further loss of kidney function. The patient eventually required nephro-ureterectomy. Extreme care should be taken when using extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy to treat staghorn calculi in kidneys

Of 38 pediatric cases of ileoconduit urinary diversion of myelomeningocele, 4 with renal calculi are presented. An increased risk of renal calculus formation may be imposed on children with myelomeningocele with ileoconduit urinary diversion especially so in functionally and anatomically abnormal kidneys and in chronic renal infection with urea-splitting bacteria. It is not clear why the ileoconduit procedure should increase the incidence of renal calculi in such children.

A case of renal adenoma associated with staghorn calculus is reported. The patient was a 52-year-old man. In 1973, he underwent an ileal conduit because of tuberculous contracted bladder and impediment in renal function. At that time, small calculi were already present in the right kidney. Later, in the left kidney, calculi developed into staghorn calculus. An ureteral calculus was also present in the right side and contracted kidney was observed. In 1983, he suffered from continuous left abdominal pain and macroscopic hematuria. Left nephrolithotomy was performed on August 23, 1983. During su

PURPOSE: We evaluated the results of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in a large number of cases with upper urinary tract calculi, and reported the strategy how to improve the efficacy and safety of ESWL.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Eight hundred fifteen patients with renal calculi and 1,204 patients with ureteral calculi were treated using a piezoelectric ultrasound-guided lithotriptor, Toshiba ESL-500A. Auxiliary measures were needed in 51 cases (2.5%) and 1,968 cases (97.5%) were treated by in situ procedures. ESWL was performed with the optimal positioning of the patient and under th

We dissolved the cystine calculi incarcerated in the ureter by irrigation with tromethamine-E via percutaneous nephrostomy. Case 1: A 25-year-old man with a past history of cystinuria and staghorn calculi in the right kidney, suffered from obstructive renal failure caused by the incarceration of a stone (18 x 15 mm) in the left middle ureter. After recovering promptly from renal failure by left percutaneous nephrostomy, he received continuous irrigation with tromethamine-E through an angiographic catheter percutaneously placed in the ureter. The ureteral calculus was reduced by 70% in size aft

The main urological complications of Crohn's disease are: vesico-intestinal fistula, ureteral obstruction, formation of urinary calculi and amyloidosis of the kidney. In the course of their illness nearly 4 to 10 per cent of patients with Crohn's disease suffer from these complications. The frequency of vesico-intestinal fistula is nearly 4 per cent; with great fluctuations, the frequency of ureteral obstruction is specified by 6 per cent. 10 per cent of all patients with Crohn's disease will suffer from secondary amyloidosis. In most cases the kidney is the organ of manifestation. In 5 per ce

Real-time sonography was performed on 94 patients the day before and at 24 and 48 hr after extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) therapy. The ability of sonography to detect renal stones before ESWL, changes in the calculi after ESWL, and the occurrence of pre- and post-ESWL hydronephrosis was evaluated. Abdominal radiographs and linear renal tomography were used as the standard of comparison. Six other patients had sonography only either before or after ESWL. One hundred patients had a total 105 kidneys treated; 18 kidneys with more than three stones were not included. The other 87 kid

BACKGROUND: The formation of bladder calculi is a complex multifactorial process. Our objective was to identify predictors of bladder calculi in men.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a regional public hospital. We used medical records from 2017 to 2019 for men diagnosed with urinary calculi or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The diagnosis of urinary calculi was based on urinalysis, plain x-ray, and ultrasonography (USG). The diagnosis of BPH was based on digital rectal examination (DRE), USG, and American Urological Association (AUA) Symptom Index to assess the severit

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is the treatment of choice for the majority of upper urinary calculi in adults. Technical limitations, including patient size and concerns over post-treatment stone fragment passage, have made the application of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in children less clearly defined. We report the successful application of the Dornier lithotriptor in the management of 18 children (22 kidneys) with upper urinary calculi.

A 62-year-old male visited our department complaining of left flank pain and urinary retention on November 6, 1989. Intravenous pyelography showed small stone shadows in bilateral ureters and lower calyx of kidney and the left kidney was not visualized. Endoscopically, calculi were seen in bilateral ureteral orifice. An ureteral catheter could not be passed up from there bilaterally. On November 13, 1989, January 24 and 26, 1990, calculi were passed out spontaneously. Analysis of the stones revealed silica calculus. The patient had a past history of duodenal ulcers. He was administered magnesi

The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of urolithiasis, infection, and bladder dysfunction in the pathogenesis of renal failure in rats subjected to supratrigonal cystectomy. One group of Sprague-Dawley rats was submitted to supratrigonal cystectomy, a second to cystectomy during which a suspension of Proteus mirabilis was injected into the bladder stump, and a third to sham surgery (controls). The animals were sacrificed two months after surgery. Blood pressure and serum urea and creatinine were measured before surgery and at sacrifice when a careful inspection of the urinary tr

Replacement lipomatosis of the kidney is a severe loss of renal parenchyma with massive fat deposition associated with long-standing inflammation and calculi. We report two pathologically proven cases of total replacement lipomatosis and one partial replacement lipomatosis diagnosed by CT. The CT images demonstrated a large fat-attenuating mass with perirenal capsule surrounded by thick pararenal fascia, streaky densities in the mass, elongated collecting system, large calculi, and absence of renal parenchyma.

We evaluated the results of open surgery in 19 children with staghorn calculi. The median age was 3.5 years (range 10 months to 14 years). One patient had bilateral calculi, hence 20 renal units were operated upon. Stone clearance was achieved in 19 cases by means of a Gil-Vernet pyelocalycolithotomy, alone (n = 10) or in combination with limited radial nephrotomies (n = 9). Extended nephrolithotomy was performed in only 1 case. Complete stone clearance was achieved in 13 kidneys (65%). Long-term follow-up showed that there was no stone recurrence in any of the 13 renal units rendered complete
