Increased Nicotinamide Phosphoribosyltransferase and Cystathionine-β-Synthase in Renal Oncocytomas, Renal Urothelial Carcinoma, and Renal Clear Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Renal oncocytomas (ROs), and clear cell (RCC) and urothelial carcinomas (UC), are common renal neoplasms. Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (Nampt) catalyzes the rate-limiting step of NAD+ synthesis and its expression is increased in several tumors. Nampt concomitantly regulates hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-synthesizing enzyme levels, including cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used tissue microarrays to examine Nampt and the H2S-synthesizing enzyme CBS protein levels in benign kidney, RCC, UC and ROs. RESULTS: Compared to benign kidney, all three neoplasms

Secondary Hyperparathyroidism With "Superscan-Like" Hypermetabolic FDG PET/CT Pattern.

A 26-year-old man with chronic terminal renal insufficiency under dialysis was referred in our institution for a checkup before kidney transplantation to ensure the absence of malignant neoplasm. The patient had a biological secondary hyperparathyroidism with highly elevated serum parathormon, and treatment with parathyroid surgery was planned before the kidney transplant. Whole-body FDG PET/CT showed no apparent malignant neoplasm, but increased metabolism of the 4 parathyroid gland and the other pitfalls of advanced secondary hyperparathyroidism on chronic renal insufficiency: pseudotumoral

Occurrence of spontaneous tumours of the renal proximal tubules in oscars Astronotus ocellatus.

This report describes the occurrence of renal papillary cystic adenomas and adenocarcinomas in oscars Astronotus ocellatus Cuvier, 1829. Samples from 5 oscars with abdominal swelling were collected between 1996 and 2004 and compared to a published case from the USA. Macroscopically, all cases revealed a large, well-demarcated, greyish-brown nodular mass in a retroperitoneal position within the body cavity, and originating from the posterior kidney. Histologically, these neoplasms were composed of epithelial cells, which were arranged in papillary cystic tubular structures and partly covered by

[Malignant neoplasms and transplantation].

Malignant neoplasms constitute a major burden of morbidity and mortality in the general population. This necessitates intense screening of transplant candidates and even closer surveillance of immunosuppressed solid organ recipients. Active malignancy is an exclusion criterion to solid organ transplantation, with few exceptions, namely localized hepatic neoplasms. Accelerated tumor progression characterizes post-transplantation malignancies. Intensified surveillance is justified in elevated rates, e.g., of skin cancer and virus-associated neoplasms, especially Epstein-Barr virus-associated pos

Renal Solitary Fibrous Tumor With Müllerian Cysts: A Novel Differential Diagnosis for Biphasic Renal Neoplasms.

Solitary fibrous tumor is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm, initially described in the pleura and infrequently found in the kidney. It is characterized by haphazardly arranged spindle cells, staghorn vasculature, coexpression of CD34 and signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6), and a NAB2::STAT6 gene fusion. We report a 64-year-old woman who presented with a 2.5 cm multilocular cystic renal mass. On microscopic examination, the tumor consisted of a spindle cell component closely intermingled with ciliated and hemorrhagic epithelial cysts. The spindle cell component was posit

Carcinogenicity of endrin.

Endrin is carcinogenic for rats, and most likely also for mice and dogs. Endrin caused significant incidences of malignant neoplasms at all sites. In one study, female rats were susceptible to the development of neoplasms of the endocrine organs, particularly carcinomas of the adrenal and pituitary glands as well as neoplasms of the reproductive system. In other studies, female rats tended to have carcinomas of the endocrine system, the mammary gland and reproductive system, and male and female rats lymphomas. Rats developed unusual malignant neoplasms, such as Kupffer cell sarcomas of the liv

[Unusual Cause of Acute Kidney Failure in a Patient with Metastatic Bladder Carcinoma Undergoing Palliative Chemotherapy].

Unusual Cause of Acute Kidney Failure in a Patient with Metastatic Bladder Carcinoma Undergoing Palliative Chemotherapy Abstract. Tumour lysis syndrome is a potentially life-threatening complication of cancer and its treatment. It mostly occurs in highly proliferative haematological neoplasms under cytotoxic therapy but can also be seen spontaneously and in solid neoplasms, particularly with high tumour burden and/or high chemosensitivity. The present case report describes a tumour lysis syndrome in a patient with metastatic bladder cancer with an elevated lactate dehydrogenase as only potenti

Constitutional relaxation of insulin-like growth factor II gene imprinting associated with Wilms' tumour and gigantism.

We have examined the imprinting of the insulin-like growth factor II gene (IGF2) in ten normal kidney samples from children with renal embryonal neoplasms. In kidney samples from nine children with normal growth profiles, IGF2 mRNA was transcribed monoallelically, consistent with normal imprinting of the gene. But in one child who had generalized somatic overgrowth, IGF2 was transcribed from both alleles in her kidney, peripheral blood leukocytes and Wilms' tumour. These findings suggest that a defect in genomic imprinting can occur constitutionally, leading to growth abnormalities and predisp

Metastatic Melanoma With Papillary Features: A Mimic and Possible Diagnostic Pitfall.

Papillary and pseudopapillary features are histopathologic findings typically associated with carcinomas (thyroid, pancreas, breast, prostate, bladder, kidney, or ovary) or mesothelioma. Melanoma is typically composed of nested and variably pigmented atypical cells. Here, we report a case of in-transit metastasis of melanoma presenting with prominent papillary features, and we discuss the differential diagnoses of neoplasms with papillary features. This case report suggests that the spectrum of neoplasms with papillary features should be expanded to include melanoma, a pattern that, to the bes

Primary micro neuroendocrine tumor arising in a horseshoe kidney with cyst: report of a case and review of literature.

Neuroendocrine tumors are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that arise from neuroendocrine cells. Primary renal neuroendocrine tumors are among the most unusual of all renal neoplasms, since neuroendocrine cells are not found within normal renal parenchyma. Here, a case of primary micro neuroendocrine tumor (about 4.7 mm*2 mm) arising in the horseshoe kidney with a cyst of a 45-year-old man was reported and a literature review was written. Primary Renal Mesenchymal Neoplasms in Nephrectomy Specimens: A 16-Year Survey of Primary and Incidental Cases From a Single Institution.

Context. Primary renal mesenchymal neoplasms are rare but diverse. Several neoplasms of mesenchymal derivation can arise as a primary renal mass; however, incidental tumors are identified in nephrectomies performed for end-stage renal disease or other malignant epithelial renal neoplasms. In this article, we document their frequencies with demographic information in nephrectomy specimens. Design. We retrospectively searched our database for nephrectomy specimens from the year 2000 to 2016. Results. A total of 224 cases were identified with an incidence rate of 4.4% (224/5128). One hundred nine

Simple Nephrectomy for Non-Functioning Kidney: An Institutional Experience with Non-Neoplastic and Incidentally Detected Neoplastic Lesions.

Introduction. Chronic kidney diseases are attributed to a variety of etiologies, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, vascular diseases, cystic kidney diseases, chronic tubulo-interstitial diseases, chronic pyelonephritis, and glomerular diseases. Simple nephrectomy is indicated when the loss of renal function in a unilateral non-functional kidney is permanent in a persistently symptomatic patient. Uncommonly, a non-functional kidney may develop neoplasm unsuspected pre-operatively and be diagnosed only during histopathological examination of nephrectomy specimen. Material and methods. W

Systematic Review: An Update on the Spectrum of Urological Malignancies in Lynch Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Lynch syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder that predisposes individuals affected to certain malignancies. Colon and endometrial cancers are the malignancies most highly associated with Lynch syndrome. However, growing body of evidence links Lynch syndrome to urological cancers. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to clarify the type of urological malignancies that fall under the Lynch-associated cancer spectrum. METHODS: Using PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search between January 1990 to February 2018, was conducted using the MEDLINE database with the application of the following

Does right-sided varicocele indicate a right-sided kidney tumor?

Varicocele is a dilation of the pampiniform venous plexus, mainly affecting the left side of the scrotum. In rare cases, however, the right side is affected. When this occurs, a retroperitoneal disease should be suspected, such as right-sided renal neoplasm. The present case report highlights the importance of right-sided varicocele in the diagnostic investigation of neoplasm of the right kidney.

Adult chronic myelomonocytic leukemia with trisomy 11: a case report.

Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (cmml) is an indolent disease in the category of myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative neoplasms, which can often evolve into acute leukemic neoplasms. Although cytogenetic abnormalities such as trisomy 8 or absence of chromosome Y are well known, few reports about cmml with trisomy 11 have been published. Here, we report a case of cmml with trisomy 11 as the sole chromosomal abnormality, resulting in a very poor outcome. Based on a bone marrow specimen, cmml-1 with trisomy 11 was diagnosed in a 79-year-old man presenting with anemia and atypical peripheral blo

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in a patient with prefibrotic primary myelofibrosis.

We report a case of 56-year-old man presented to us with chief complaints of frothy urine and leg swelling. A urinalysis revealed nephrotic-range proteinuria. Haematological investigations revealed thrombocytosis, leucocytosis and peripheral blood smear showed a leucoerythroblastic picture. JAK 2 mutation was positive. To confirm the diagnosis of myeloproliferative neoplasm, bone marrow biopsy was done, which was suggestive of primary myelofibrosis. The patient underwent kidney biopsy due to rapidly declining renal function and persistent proteinuria, which was suggestive of focal segmental gl

Castleman's disease of the kidney: Sonographic findings.

We report a case of rare Castleman's disease of the kidney that mimicked a renal neoplasm with emphasis on the imaging and histologic findings. A 47-year-old man presented with dyspeptic symptoms. Ultrasound revealed a vascular, heterogeneous mass in the left kidney. Multiphasic CT scan confirmed an enhancing lesion with enlarged left para-aortic lymph nodes suspicious for nodal metastases. The provisional diagnosis was renal cell carcinoma. Percutaneous biopsy yielded a diagnosis of Castleman's disease of the hyaline-vascular type. Despite advancement in imaging modalities, differentiation of
