Reaching to the Self: The Development of Infants' Ability to Localize Targets on the Body.

This study focused on the development of infants' sensorimotor knowledge about the layout of their bodies. Little is known about the development of the body as a reaching space, despite the importance of this skill for many self-directed adaptive behaviors, such as removing foreign stimuli from the skin or scratching an itch. A new method was developed in which vibrating targets were placed on the heads and arms of 7- to 21-month-old infants (N = 78) to test reaching localization of targets. Manual localization improved with age, and visual localization was associated with successful reaching.

Subjective experience of sensation in anorexia nervosa.

The nature of disturbance in body experience in anorexia nervosa (AN) remains poorly operationalized despite its prognostic significance. We examined the relationship of subjective reports of sensitivity to and behavioral avoidance of sensory experience (e.g., to touch, motion) to body image disturbance and temperament in adult women currently diagnosed with AN (n = 20), women with a prior history of AN who were weight restored (n = 15), and healthy controls with no eating disorder history (n = 24). Levels of sensitivity to sensation and attempts to avoid sensory experience were significantly

Am I seeing my hand? Visual appearance and knowledge of controllability both contribute to the visual capture of a person's own body.

When confronted with complex visual scenes in daily life, how do we know which visual information represents our own hand? We investigated the cues used to assign visual information to one's own hand. Wrist tendon vibration elicits an illusory sensation of wrist movement. The intensity of this illusion attenuates when the actual motionless hand is visually presented. Testing what kind of visual stimuli attenuate this illusion will elucidate factors contributing to visual detection of one's own hand. The illusion was reduced when a stationary object was shown, but only when participants knew it

The formation of trajectories during goal-oriented locomotion in humans. I. A stereotyped behaviour.

Human locomotion was investigated in a goal-oriented task where subjects had to walk to and through a doorway starting from a fixed position and orientation in space. The door was located at different positions and orientations in space, resulting in a total of 40 targets. While no specific constraint was provided to subjects in terms of the path they were to follow or the expected walking speeds, all of them generated very similar trajectories in terms of both path geometry and velocity profiles. These results are reminiscent of the stereotyped properties of the hand trajectories observed in

Evaluating the reliability of multi-item scales: a non-parametric approach to the ordered categorical structure of data collected with the Swedish version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia and the Self-Efficacy Scale.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the ability of a rank-invariant non-parametric method with that of kappa statistics to evaluate the reliability of the Swedish version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia and the Self-Efficacy Scale by identifying systematic and random disagreement. The aim was, further, to compare 2 different statistical approaches to obtain a global value from multi-item scales. DESIGN: A test-retest study. SUBJECTS: A total of 46 patients with whiplash-associated disorders were enrolled and 39 (85%) completed the test-retest assessment. METHODS: Data from the multi-item scales were

Paroxysmal kinesigenic dystonia associated with a medullary lesion.

A 67-year-old man experienced the abrupt onset of intermittent spasms of tightening of his throat muscles and elevation of his tongue to the roof of his mouth. These were precipitated by initiating movements, either of his mouth (eating, drinking, speaking, yawning) or of his whole body (arising from bed or a chair, lifting heavy weights). Episodes occurred six to 20 times per day, lasted 10-30 s, then resolved spontaneously. Two years later, results of his general neurological examination, including speech, were normal. Several spasms were provoked by arising from a seated or supine position

Bimanual co-ordination in callosal agenesis and partial commissurotomy.

Studies [Preilowski, B.F.B. in Cerebral Localization, pp. 116-131, Springer, Berlin, 1975; Reynolds, D.M. and Jeeves, M.A. Neuropsychologia 12, 287-290, 1974] of bilateral motor coordination in commissurotomy patients pointed to the importance of direct interhemispheric integration for the fine regulation of the lower motor system within each hemisphere. When external visual feedback was withdrawn in the performance of a bimanual tracking task, partial commissurotomy patients, in whom the anterior portions of the callosum were cut, deviated significantly when drawing lines which required asymm

Utility and User Experience with 3-Dimensional Vibrotactile Kinesthetic Feedback for Improving Reach-to-Grasp Accuracy and Efficiency After Stroke: A Case Series.

Recent studies have shown that supplemental sensory feedback systems have potential to mitigate functional impairment after neuromotor injury through mechanisms of sensory augmentation or replacement. In this proof-of-concept case series, we evaluated multi-session 3-dimensional kinesthetic vibrotactile feedback training as a means to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of goal-directed reaching in the absence of visual feedback in survivors of stroke. A motion capture system converted real-time position of the contralesional hand within a Cartesian frame of reference into spatiotemporal patte

Chinese handwriting performance of primary school children with dyslexia.

The aim of this study was to investigate the Chinese handwriting performance of typical children and children with dyslexia, and to examine whether speed and accuracy of handwriting could reliably discriminate these two groups of children. One hundred and thirty-seven children with dyslexia and 756 typical children were recruited from main stream primary schools for the study. They were requested to copy 90 Chinese characters using the Chinese Handwriting Assessment Tool (CHAT) jointly developed by a project team from two universities in Hong Kong. The process of handwriting was recorded and t

The role of motor intention in motor awareness: an experimental study on anosognosia for hemiplegia.

Recent theories propose that anosognosia for hemiplegia (AHP) results from specific impairments in motor planning. However, no study has hitherto directly investigated the role of motor intention in the observed non-veridical awareness of action in AHP. We developed the following paradigm to investigate the role of motor planning in awareness in patients with AHP: Four hemiplegic patients with and four without anosognosia were provided with false visual feedback of movement in their left paralysed arm through a prosthetic rubber hand. We examined whether the ability to detect presence or absen

Relative Wulst volume is correlated with orbit orientation and binocular visual field in birds.

In mammals, species with more frontally oriented orbits have broader binocular visual fields and relatively larger visual regions in the brain. Here, we test whether a similar pattern of correlated evolution is present in birds. Using both conventional statistics and modern comparative methods, we tested whether the relative size of the Wulst and optic tectum (TeO) were significantly correlated with orbit orientation, binocular visual field width and eye size in birds using a large, multi-species data set. In addition, we tested whether relative Wulst and TeO volumes were correlated with axial

Training with computer-supported motor imagery in post-stroke rehabilitation.

Converging lines of evidence suggest that motor imagery (the mental simulation of a motor act within working memory) is associated with subliminal activation of the motor system. This observation has led to the hypothesis that cortical activation during motor imagery may affect the acquisition of specific motor skills and help the recovery of motor function. In this paper, we describe a clinical protocol in which we use interactive tools to stimulate motor imagery in hemiplegic stroke patients, thereby helping them to recover lost motor function. The protocol consists of an inpatient and an ou

Differences in the visual control of pantomimed and natural grasping movements.

In a series of experiments, we studied the differences between natural target-directed grasping movements and 'pantomimed' movements directed towards remembered objects. Although subjects continued to scale their hand opening for object size when pantomiming, grip formation and other kinematic variables differed significantly from those seen in normal target-directed actions. This was true whether the subjects had just seen the target object 2 sec before (Experiments 1 and 2) or whether the target object was still present and they were simply required to pantomime the grasping movement beside

Visuospatial functions in patients with spasmodic torticollis.

Visuospatial functions were studied in 18 patients with spasmodic torticollis and 18 matched controls. Subjects were examined with respect to their judgement of the subjective vertical, personal and extrapersonal orientation, the discrimination of left and right, the ability to judge angles and distances, and a drawing task. Patients showed marked deficits in extrapersonal orientation and atypical displacement errors to the right when requested to set the subjective vertical. Results were largely independent of the clinical characteristics of the disease. The pattern of results was attributed

Clinical assessment of postural stability following vestibular nerve section.

Little is known about the recovery of postural control in patients following acute vestibular loss. This paper reports on the results of moving-platform posturography to assess the recovery of postural stability in 24 patients following vestibular nerve section. Posturography was abnormal prior to surgery in 17% of the patients. Seven days following surgery, 44% of the patients demonstrated vestibular deficit patterns, while 56% of the patients had normal posturography. Posturography was normal in all patients 1 month following surgery. Abnormal posturography was subsequently noted in 21% of t

Differential effects of ambivalent visual-vestibular-somatosensory stimulation on the perception of self-motion.

The direction of perceived self-motion was determined as a function of combined visual-vestibular and vestibulo-somatosensory stimulations about the earth's vertical z-axis by means of a rotary chair and drum system. The predominant influence of concurrent antagonistic vestibular stimulation on circular vection (CV) even at small accelerations has been demonstrated by several studies in the past. The results of the present paper do not confirm the generally assumed influence of the vestibular system on exocentric motion perception, but instead produce evidence of the dominance of the visual ch
