INTRODUCTION: Observational learning is a key tool for improving skilled performances. Sport officials (e.g., referees, umpires, and judges) might glean particular benefits from using observation, as most officials do not engage in traditional practice. Unfortunately, little is known about how observational learning can be of benefit to sport officials. Thus, the purpose of this study was to take an exploratory approach to learn more about sport officials' use of observation.
METHODS: Participants included 206 sport officials (170 male, 35 female, 1 not specified) from 17 sports (mainly ice h

Sera from white-tailed deer (WTD, Odocoileus virginianus) hunter-harvested throughout New York State (NYS), 2007-2015, were tested by plaque reduction neutralization for antibodies against nine mosquito-borne viruses from the families Peribunyaviridae, Flaviviridae, and Togaviridae. Overall, 76.1% (373/490) of sampled WTD were seropositive against at least one virus, and 38.8% were exposed to multiple viruses. The seropositivity rate in adult WTD (78.0%) was significantly greater (P < 0.0001) than that in fawns (47.7%). Neutralizing antibodies against California serogroup viruses were most com

Authors of previous studies commonly used a multiselect checklist method to assess an athlete's ability to recognize true sport-related concussion (SRC) signs and symptoms (S&S) among incorrect distractor options. However, this may overinflate the evaluation of participants' knowledge because the multiselect method does not test athletes' ability to retrieve knowledge from their long-term memory. To examine this hypothesis, we sent an online survey to registered members of the Japan Lacrosse Association (n = 8530) to assess differences in reported SRC S&S by open-ended-question and multiselect

Clinical Scenario: Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is a condition related with ischemia of the body's tissue due to increases in intracompartmental pressures, which involves, among other symptoms, pain with exertion. CECS is often overlooked or misdiagnosed due to an ambiguous presentation. Diagnostic accuracy of CECS and subsequent management can be improved when contributing factors are known. Research is lacking on the type of patient most likely to experience CECS, highlighting the need for identification of common demographic characteristics among affected individuals. Clin

BACKGROUND: Commotio cordis, sudden cardiac death (SCD) caused by relatively innocent impact to the chest, is one of the leading causes of SCD in sports. Commercial chest protectors have not been demonstrated to mitigate the risk of these SCDs.
METHODS: To develop a standard to assess chest protectors, 4 phases occurred. A physiological commotio cordis model was utilized to assess variables that predicted for SCD. Next, a surrogate model was developed based on data from the physiological model, and the attenuation in risk was assessed. In the third phase, this model was calibrated and validat

The species composition and population dynamics of adult mosquitoes in a wetland near Iuka, MS, were analyzed over a 6-yr period (1997-2002) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection rates of arboviruses determined during five of those years. Blood meals of three likely vector species were identified using a PCR-based method that allows identification of the host to species. Culex erraticus (Dyar & Knab) composed 51.9% of the population during the 6-yr period with 295 females collected per trap night. Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) virus was detected in six ge

A surveillance program for mosquito-borne arboviruses was conducted in Connecticut following an epizootic of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in horses and domestic birds during 1990. Mosquito trapping was done weekly using CO2-baited miniature light traps at 12 freshwater swamp sites that were located mostly in the southeastern portion of the state. Trapping was conducted from June 27 to October 11, 1991 and from June 2 to September 30, 1992. Totals of 7,435 (1991) and 13,912 (1992) adult female mosquitoes representing 21 species in 7 genera were collected and assayed for arboviruses. Virus

BACKGROUND: Concussions make up a significant proportion of sports injuries. This study aimed to describe the mechanisms of injury and associated symptoms of pediatric patients diagnosed with concussions (age range, 4-17 years) from contact sports.
HYPOTHESIS: Mechanisms of injury would differ based on sex and age, with female athletes and younger athletes aged 4 to 11 years sustaining fewer concussions from player-to-player contact.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study.
METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried for all contact sport concussions present

CONTEXT: Decreased hamstring flexibility can lead to a plethora of musculoskeletal injuries, including low back pain, hamstring strains, and patellofemoral pain. Lack of flexibility may be the result of myofascial adhesions. The fascia connected to the hamstrings is part of the superficial back line that runs from the cranium to the plantar aspect of the foot. Any disruption along this chain may limit the flexibility of the hamstring.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate if self-myofascial release (SMR) of the plantar surface of the foot in addition to the hamstring group was more effective at improving

A previous study showed prolonged cognitive-motor integration (CMI) deficits in youth with a history of concussion who were classified as asymptomatic by current return-to-play protocols, highlighting potential differences between clinical symptom recovery and skill recovery. The present study examines factors that may influence skilled performance recovery (defined as matching the skill level of no-concussion history peers) post-concussion in a similar cohort. Sixty-four asymptomatic youth (M = 13 yrs.) soccer, hockey, and lacrosse players with a concussion history (M = 14 months post-concuss
