Embodiment of action-related language in the native and a late foreign language - An fMRI-study.

Theories of embodied cognition postulate that language processing activates similar sensory-motor structures as when interacting with the environment. Only little is known about the neural substrate of embodiment in a foreign language (L2) as compared to the mother tongue (L1). In this fMRI study, we investigated embodiment of motor and non-motor action verbs in L1 and L2 including 31 late bilinguals. Half had German as L1 and French as L2, and the other half vice-versa. We collapsed across languages to avoid the confound between language and order of language acquisition. Region of interest a

Language disorders in patients with striatal lesions: Deciphering the role of the striatum in language performance.

The classical neural model of language refers to a cortical network involving frontal, parietal and temporal regions. However, patients with subcortical lesions of the striatum have language difficulties. We investigated whether the striatum is directly involved in language or whether its role in decision-making has an indirect effect on language performance, by testing carriers of Huntington's disease (HD) mutations and controls. HD is a genetic neurodegenerative disease primarily affecting the striatum and causing language disorders. We asked carriers of the HD mutation in the premanifest (b

Altered efficiency of white matter connections for language function in children with language disorder.

To characterize structural white matter substrates associated with language functions in children with language disorders (LD), a psychometry-driven diffusion tractography network was investigated with canonical correlation analysis (CCA), which can reliably predict expressive and receptive language scores from the nodal efficiency (NE) of the obtained network. The CCA found that the NE values of six regions: left inferior-frontal-opercular, left insular, left angular gyrus, left superior-temporal-gyrus, right hippocampus, and right cerebellar-lobule were highly correlated with language scores

The Role of Glutamate in Language and Language Disorders - Evidence from ERP and Pharmacologic Studies.

Current models of language processing do not address mechanisms at the neurotransmitter level, nor how pharmacologic agents may improve language function(s) in seemingly disparate disorders. L-Glutamate, the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the human brain, is extensively involved in various higher cortical functions. We postulate that the physiologic role of L-Glutamate neurotransmission extends to the regulation of language access, comprehension, and production, and that disorders in glutamatergic transmission and circuitry contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases a

Modulation of language switching by cue timing: Implications for models of bilingual language control.

The current study examines the interplay between global and local processes in bilingual language control. We investigated language-switching performance of unbalanced Arabic-Hebrew bilinguals in cued picture naming, using 5 different cuing parameters. The language cue could precede the picture, follow it, or appear simultaneously with it. Naming latencies were reduced with precuing, demonstrating bilinguals' ability to globally modulate language activation, and more strongly reduced with postcuing, demonstrating bilinguals' ability to locally activate lemmas in both languages. Precuing reduce

Language profiles and literacy outcomes of children with resolving, emerging, or persisting language impairments.

BACKGROUND: Children with language impairment (LI) show heterogeneity in development. We tracked children from pre-school to middle childhood to characterize three developmental trajectories: resolving, persisting and emerging LI. METHODS: We analyzed data from children identified as having preschool LI, or being at family risk of dyslexia, together with typically developing controls at three time points: t1 (age 3;09), t3 (5;08) and t5 (8;01). Language measures are reported at t1, t3 and t5, and literacy abilities at t3 and t5. A research diagnosis of LI (irrespective of recruitment group) w

Opportunities for using computers in speech and language therapy: a study of one language unit.

Whilst the use of information technology is increasing in importance as an aid to speech and language therapy, its introduction has so far been unsystematic. Systems analysis methodologies for assessing how information technology can best be employed have been developed for use in the business world. The present study used one such methodology--Checkland's soft systems--to investigate which aspects of the activities of one language unit were most likely to be improved or helped by the introduction of new technology. Such an approach was found to yield useful insights and several opportunities

The Impact of an Extra Chromosome on Language: Developmental Language Disorder in Sex Chromosome Trisomies.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the language and cognitive skills of preschool children with sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs) with and without a co-diagnosis of developmental language disorder (DLD), considering possible differences between SCT types (i.e., XXX, XXY, and XYY). METHOD: Fifty-five children with a prenatally diagnosed SCT (19 XXX, 25 XXY, and 11 XYY) aged 48-64 months were included in the study. The presence of a DLD diagnosis or other neurodevelopmental disorder was established by structured interviews, while cognitive and language skills were assessed using a test battery incl

Language, Social, and Face Regions Are Affected in Toddlers with Autism and Predictive of Language Outcome.

Identifying prognostic early brain alterations is crucial for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Leveraging structural MRI data from 166 ASD and 109 typical developing (TD) toddlers and controlling for brain size, we found that, compared to TD, ASD toddlers showed larger or thicker lateral temporal regions; smaller or thinner frontal lobe and midline structures; larger callosal subregion volume; and smaller cerebellum. Most of these differences were replicated in an independent cohort of 38 ASD and 37 TD toddlers. Moreover, the identified brain alterations were related to ASD symptom severity and

Written Language Characteristics of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Terms of the Components of the Language.

Hearing has vital importance for language development. Deaf and hard of hearing children have problems in spoken and written language due to hearing loss. The development of written language is directly related to language skills such as listening, speaking, and reading skills. This study aims to evaluate the use of language components in written language in deaf and hard of hearing students. In the study, writing samples of eight deaf and hard of hearing students who continue 4th grade in the school for the deaf were taken and error analysis was conducted. Besides, interviews were made with t

Cortical Thickness in bilingual and monolingual children: Relationships to language use and language skill.

There is a growing body of evidence based on adult neuroimaging that suggests that the brain adapts to bilingual experiences to support language proficiency. The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study is a useful source of data for evaluating this claim during childhood, as it involves data from a large sample of American children. Using the baseline ABCD Study data collected at ages nine and ten, the goal of this study was to identify differences in cortical thickness between bilinguals and monolinguals and to evaluate how variability in English vocabulary and English use within

Language-Specific Effects in Response to Spelling Intervention in Italian and in English as an Additional Language.

According to a language-integrated view of spelling development, learning to spell involves the same language-learning skills across alphabetic systems. A prediction based on this view is that the same spelling training should be equally effective for learning to spell in a shallow (Italian, native language) or an opaque (English, additional language) orthography. We tested this prediction by teaching 6- to 9-year-old Italian children to use multiletter spelling units to spell words in Italian and English. The children were trained on the spelling of Italian words containing orthographic diffi

Neural correlates of language and non-language visuospatial processing in adolescents with reading disability.

Despite anecdotal evidence of relative visuospatial processing strengths in individuals with reading disability (RD), only a few studies have assessed the presence or the extent of these putative strengths. The current study examined the cognitive and neural bases of visuospatial processing abilities in adolescents with RD relative to typically developing (TD) peers. Using both cognitive tasks and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we contrasted printed word recognition with non-language visuospatial processing tasks. Behaviorally, lower reading skill was related to a visuospatial pr

Speech and language therapy interventions for children with primary speech and language delay or disorder.

BACKGROUND: It is thought that approximately 6% of children have speech and language difficulties of which the majority will not have any other significant developmental difficulties. Whilst most children's difficulties resolve, children whose difficulties persist into primary school may have long-term problems concerning literacy, socialisation, behaviour and school attainment. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effectiveness of speech and language interventions for children with primary speech and language delay/disorder. SEARCH STRATEGY: The following databases were searched: The Cochrane Control

Verb and noun morphology in the spoken and written language of children with language learning disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of verb and noun morphology in school-age children's spoken and written language. Sixty children, with and without language learning disabilities (LLD), each produced 2 spoken and 2 written language samples. The children's accuracy in using morphemes that mark verb finiteness (regular past tense, 3rd person singular present tense, copula, and auxiliary BE) was compared with their accuracy in using noun morphology (regular plural, possessive, articles). As would be expected, the typically achieving children, who were aged 7 to 12 years, had m

[Value of the Heidelberg Language Development Test in diagnosis of children with language development disorders].

Diagnosis of developmental speech and language disorders in accordance with the ICD-10 is to be based on the psychometric assessment of speech and language performance. In the present study the clinical validity of the Heidelberger Sprachentwicklungstest (HSET) for diagnosing expressive language disorders was assessed by comparing HSET subtest results for 92 children aged 4 to 10 years who had various speech and language disorders with the children's scores on another language test, a cognitive test and clinical findings. The HSET scores differed considerably from the clinical ratings of the s

Language! Effects of an individualized structured language curriculum for middle and high school students.

This chapter documents the success of a 12-month individualized structured language curriculum (LANGUAGE!) provided to middle and high school juvenile offenders (n=45; 43 males; 2 females) enrolled in a rehabilitation program. Although individual students participated in the program for an average of just 22.7 weeks (SD 8.51), they made significant gains (more than three years growth) over this period in written language expression (composition), encoding (spelling), and decoding (isolated word recognition), as documented by standardized literacy measures, moving from standard scores in the 60

Heritability of Specific Language Impairment and Nonspecific Language Impairment at Ages 4 and 6 Years Across Phenotypes of Speech, Language, and Nonverbal Cognition.

Purpose Early language and speech acquisition can be delayed in twin children, a twinning effect that diminishes between 4 and 6 years of age in a population-based sample. The purposes of this study were to examine how twinning effects influence the identification of children with language impairments at 4 and 6 years of age, comparing children with specific language impairment (SLI) and nonspecific language impairment (NLI); the likelihood that affectedness will be shared within monozygotic versus dizygotic twin pairs; and estimated levels of heritability for SLI and NLI.
