Verbal problem-solving difficulties in autism spectrum disorders and atypical language development.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) adopt less efficient strategies than typically developing (TD) peers on the Twenty Questions Task (TQT), a measure of verbal problem-solving skills. Although problems with the TQT are typically associated with executive dysfunction, they have also been reported in children who are deaf, suggesting a role for atypical language development. To test the contribution of language history to ASD problem solving, TQT performance was compared in children with high-functioning autism (HFA), children with Asperger syndrome (AS) and TD children. The HFA grou

Does early detection of otitis media with effusion prevent delayed language development?

OBJECTIVE: To consider whether earlier detection of otitis media with effusion (OME) in asymptomatic children in the first 4 years of life prevents delayed language development. METHODS: MEDLINE and other databases were searched and relevant references from articles reviewed. Critical appraisal and consensus development were in accordance with the methods of the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care. RESULTS: No randomised controlled trials assessing the overall screening for OME and early intervention to prevent delay in acquiring language were identified, although one trial evaluat

Screen Use and Children's Language Development From Ages 5 to 7 Years.

IMPORTANCE: Concerns about screen use and early language development are widespread, and prior research has reported mixed findings. Many studies have not distinguished baseline differences from developmental change, leaving uncertainty about whether screen use is associated with actual language development in early childhood. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between children's and parental screen use and children's language development from ages 5 to 7 years. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based prospective cohort study included children recruited through municipalitie

Development of a benchmarking dataset for symptom detection using large language models.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a pipeline for evaluating large language models (LLMs) on the task of capturing symptoms from clinical encounters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We created a gold standard dataset of symptom annotations from simulated doctor-patient encounter excerpts (264 encounters; 16 symptoms; double-coded and adjudicated). Nine different LLMs from 4 vendors (OpenAI, Meta, DeepSeek, Moonshot AI) were used as examples to test our evaluation pipeline; outputs were assessed for correct structure and symptom information. RESULTS: Of 3085 excerpts, 2087 (68%) contained symptoms. Pain, cough, a

White matter development and language abilities during infancy in autism spectrum disorder.

White matter (WM) fiber tract differences are present in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and could be important markers of behavior. One of the earliest phenotypic differences in ASD are language atypicalities. Although language has been linked to WM in typical development, no work has evaluated this association in early ASD. Participants came from the Infant Brain Imaging Study and included 321 infant siblings of children with ASD at high likelihood (HL) for developing ASD; 70 HL infants were later diagnosed with ASD (HL-ASD), and 251 HL infants were not diagnosed with ASD (HL-Neg). A control

China's language input system in the digital age affects children's reading development.

Written Chinese as a logographic system was developed over 3,000 y ago. Historically, Chinese children have learned to read by learning to associate the visuo-graphic properties of Chinese characters with lexical meaning, typically through handwriting. In recent years, however, many Chinese children have learned to use electronic communication devices based on the pinyin input method, which associates phonemes and English letters with characters. When children use pinyin to key in letters, their spelling no longer depends on reproducing the visuo-graphic properties of characters that are indis

Plasticity and reorganization during language development in children with early brain injury.

Although some studies have reported subtle language deficits following early focal brain lesions (EFBL), most studies find no evidence for differential language outcomes as a function of lesion side or lesion type in children with congenital injuries to one side of the brain. However, recent prospective studies of the first stages of language development in English-speaking children with EFBL have reported greater delays in expressive vocabulary in children with left-hemisphere damage, particularly if the lesion involves left temporal cortex. In the present study, first stages in the developme

Are Bilingual Children With Speech, Language, and Communication Needs More at Risk for Heritage Language Attrition Than Their Typically Developing Peers?

PURPOSE: We examined the language environment and proficiency of bilingual children with typical development (TD) and with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCNs). We asked whether the children with SLCNs had more reduced heritage language (HL) experiences than did their TD peers and whether this was associated with a weaker HL and a stronger societal language (SL). METHOD: Children (N = 48, Mage = 7.89 years) with TD and with SLCNs and their parents participated in this study; all were learning English as their SL with diverse HLs. Parents responded to a detailed questionnaire (Qua

Exploring the relationships among language input-output, vocabulary knowledge, and English Reading development of emergent bilinguals in dual language immersion programs.

Learning to read in a second language (L2) poses unique challenges for emergent bilingual (EB) children. This study examines whether Spanish-English EB children's vocabulary skills in Spanish and English mediate the relationship between their language input-output and English (L2) reading skills. The sample included 338 Latina/o EB children in first and third grades enrolled in dual-language immersion (DLI) programs in the United States. Results from the multivariate regression model revealed differences in language input-output at home, with third graders reported using more English than firs

Development of a culturally enhanced caregiver-facilitated language nutrition intervention "+Language is Medicine" to address developmental delay in Diné (Navajo) toddlers.

INTRODUCTION: Developmental Delay (DD) is highly common in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN; Indigenous) toddlers and leads to high numbers of AI/AN children who eventually need special education services. AI/AN children are 2.89 times more likely to receive special education compared to other children in the U.S., yet developmental disorders are more frequently under diagnosed and untreated in AI/AN infants and toddlers. DD, which can be identified as early as toddlerhood, can lead to negative impacts on developmental trajectories, school readiness, and long-term health. Signs of DD c

Factors Affecting Language Development in the Context of Childhood Trauma: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: Early traumatic events, such as maltreatment (i.e., abuse and/or neglect) or exposure to violence, are associated with wide-ranging impacts on children's development, including their language skills. The purpose of this review was to determine the current state of knowledge in the area of children's language development in the context of childhood trauma; how the type, timing, and duration of trauma affect language outcomes; and what other individual, family, or community factors are considered in the literature. METHOD: A scoping review was carried out to identify relevant literatur

Visual processing is a language-agnostic window into heterogeneity in early reading development.

Reading disabilities impose profound impacts on educational and socioeconomic outcomes worldwide, yet identifying reliable early predictors remains a significant challenge. For five decades, the role of visual processing in reading development has been contested-largely due to small, homogeneous samples and a lack of research designed to capture heterogeneity in reading development. In this study, we administered theory-driven, carefully validated measures of visual processing-including multi-element processing of letters and pseudo-letters and global motion coherence-to a large, socioeconomic

Functional Dissociation in the Developing Superior Temporal Lobe: Language and Theory of Mind.

Language and theory of mind (ToM; the ability to infer others' mental states) are both crucial for human communication and yet their developmental origins are unclear. Are their neural substrates distinct within the superior temporal lobe (STL) but with opposing lateralization, as in adults? Or do they emerge from common neural substrates during development, perhaps in homologous regions originally involved in more basic social processing? Here we investigate the development of this functional dissociation, and the dissociation of their underlying connectivity fingerprints in a large cohort of
