BACKGROUND: Justice-involved Veterans experience notable risk for psychosocial stressors (e.g., homelessness) and psychiatric multimorbidity, which can result in complex clinical presentations. However, research examining how such factors coalesce to impact risk for suicide remains limited.
METHODS: We conducted a latent class analysis of 180,454 Veterans accessing Veterans Health Administration (VHA) justice-related services from 2005 to 2018.
RESULTS: A four-model class membership solution was identified. Among these classes, risk for suicide was highest among Veterans with greater psychia

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents may experience a variety of subjective adverse events (AEs) caused by cancer treatment. The identification of distinct groups of patients is crucial for guiding symptomatic AE management interventions to prevent AEs from worsening.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify subgroups of children with cancer experiencing similar patterns of subjective toxicities and evaluate differences among these subgroups in demographic and clinical characteristics.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted of 356 children in China with malignancies who rece

OBJECTIVE: To identify latent trajectories of IQ over time after pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) and examine the predictive value of risk factors within and across recovery trajectories.
METHOD: 206 children ages 3-7 years at injury were included: 87 TBI (23 severe, 21 moderate, 43 complicated mild) and 119 orthopedic injury (OI). We administered intelligence tests shortly after injury (1½ months), 12 months, and 6.8 years postinjury. Latent class growth modeling was used to identify latent subgroups. Separate models examined verbal and nonverbal IQ recovery trajectories following TBI

In a common disease population such as atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), latent classes may uncover subgroups of patients that can be distinguished by combinations of several factors instead of a single factor. In this study, we sought to identify clinical, demographic, and social sub-phenotypes of ASCVD, using latent class analysis (LCA), and assess the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality across the identified socio-clinical classes. LCA is a statistical technique employed to uncover hidden class divisions within a set of individuals by utilizing a mix of categorical

BACKGROUND: Biomarker science in heart failure (HF) is advancing quickly in our ability to diagnosis and treat patients with this complex syndrome. Researchers are urged to not use single-marker strategies, but instead evaluate biomarkers in patterns to better understand their relationship to one another, as well as disease progression. Latent class mixture modeling allows researchers to determine novel associations between biomarkers.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to identify and compare latent classes of cardiovascular biomarkers among patients with moderate to advanced HF.

BACKGROUND: Research into the effects of nutrition on depression is often performed by examining the effects of singular nutrients and dietary styles (e.g.: vegan, Mediterranean). The present study is the first one to establish the effects of patterns of nutritional deficiency within the American population and examines their effects on depression.
METHODS: Data was drawn from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Latent class analysis was performed to identify homogeneous groups of nutrient deficiency. A 3-step analysis was performed to establish class-dependant differen

BACKGROUND: Violently bereaved individuals are at increased risk of developing severe and comorbid disorders. Comorbidity may increase psychiatric symptom severity and suicide risk and decrease psychosocial functioning compared with having one disorder. We aimed to identify subgroups of individuals with similar symptom patterns, describe prevalence rates and overall levels of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) per class, and explore associations between class membership and personal and h

BACKGROUND: Induced sputum (IS) allows to measure mediators of asthmatic inflammation in bronchial secretions. NSAID-exacerbated respiratory disease (NERD) is recognized as a distinct asthma phenotype, usually with a severe course, eosinophilic airway inflammation, and increased production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids. A more insightful analysis of NERD patients has shown this phenotype to be nonhomogeneous.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify possible subphenotypes in a cohort of NERD patients with the means of latent class analysis (LCA).
METHODS: A total of 95 asthma patients with aspirin

Military veterans with histories of military sexual trauma (MST) are at risk for several negative mental health outcomes and report perceived barriers to treatment engagement. To inform interventions to promote gender-sensitive access to MST-related care, we conducted an exploratory, multiple-group latent class analysis of negative beliefs about MST-related care. Participants were U.S. veterans (N = 1,185) who screened positive for MST within the last 2 months and reported a perceived need for MST-related treatment. Associations between class membership, mental health screenings, logistical ba

Electronic forms of dating violence among youth are common yet little is known about how these forms of violence overlap with the commonly studied domains of physical, sexual and verbal teen dating violence. Using factor analysis and latent class analysis, this study identifies patterns of electronic, verbal, physical and sexual dating violence victimization and perpetration in 9th and 12th graders. Data are from 470 9th (n = 190; 60.5% female; mean age = 12.0 years, age range: 11.3-13.8) and 12th graders (n = 280; 63.9% female; mean age = 14.9 years, age range: 14.0-16.6) from southeastern Mi

BACKGROUND: Latent class analyses (LCA) are increasingly being used to target specialized HIV interventions, but generalizability of emergent population structures across settings has yet to be considered. We compare LCA performed on two online samples of HIV negative Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) to detect more generalizable latent class structures and to assess the extent to which sampling considerations impact the validity of LCA results.
METHODS: LCAs were performed on an 1) nationwide online survey which involved no in-person contact with study staff and a 2) sentinel surveilla

OBJECTIVE: To investigate a cohort of children with symptomatic joint hypermobility.
METHODS: Case notes for 318 children with joint hypermobility attending a rheumatology clinic were reviewed for clinical presentation, medical history, psychosocial factors and physical examination findings. Seven key variables were extracted and used as indicator variables in a latent class analysis to estimate the presence and number of subgroups of children with symptomatic joint hypermobility.
RESULTS: Two subgroups with differing clinical presentations were identified accounting for age and gender: an '

PURPOSE: Septic shock is a highly heterogeneous condition which is part of the challenge in its diagnosis and treatment. In this study we aim to identify clinically relevant subphenotypes of septic shock using a novel statistic al approach.
METHODS: Baseline patient data from a large global clinical trial of septic shock (n = 1696) was analysed using latent class analysis (LCA). This approach allowed investigators to identify subgroups in a heterogeneous population by estimating a categorical latent variable that detects relatively homogeneous subgroups within a complex phenomenon.
RESULTS:

The State of Hawai'i, like many other areas across the United States, has large numbers of individuals and families experiencing homelessness, many of whom seek support through statewide shelters and services. This study explored the diversity of ways in which individuals and families moved through Hawai'i's homeless service system. Using administrative data, a cohort of new service users was tracked across time to trace the developmental trajectories of their homeless service use. The sample consisted of adults who had entered the service system for the first time in the fiscal year (FY) of 2

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous disorder with complex underlying neuropathology that is still not completely understood. For better understanding of this heterogeneity, we aimed to identify cognitive subtypes using latent class analysis (LCA) in a large sample of patients with AD dementia. In addition, we explored the relationship between the identified cognitive subtypes, and their demographical and neurobiological characteristics.
METHODS: We performed LCA based on neuropsychological test results of 938 consecutive probable patients with AD dementia using Mini-Mental

BACKGROUND: Drug treatment courts serve a diverse population of adults. While all have engaged in criminal activities and have substance abuse problems, participants vary in the intensity of their problems as well as related concerns in other domains of functioning which also may require intervention. The purpose of this study was to identify differences among participants, which could have implications for the effectiveness of drug treatment courts.
METHODS: Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify subgroups from a sample of over 1000 adults attending two drug treatment courts in cen

BACKGROUND: Parents who experience the death of a child may develop a range of mental health problems including insomnia and prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Insomnia symptoms predict worsening of prolonged grief symptoms and persons with more chronic insomnia trajectories may be at risk of developing PGD. However, it remains to be established when prolonged grief and insomnia symptomatology co-occur and which potential risk factors heighten the risk of comorbid insomnia and prolonged grief. METHODS: To address these questions, we conducted a cross-sectional, registry-based survey study involvi

BACKGROUND: Homebound older adults represent a high-risk, high-needs population characterized by significant clinical and sociodemographic heterogeneity. Little is known about how such heterogeneity shapes care needs and utilization patterns. We characterized utilization patterns among distinct subgroups of homebound older adults and examined associations between levels of outpatient care and emergency department (ED) utilization.
