Basophil histamine release and lymphocyte proliferation tests were examined with latex allergen prepared from surgical gloves in 15 patients with latex contact urticaria. The basophil histamine release test (BHRT) yielded positive results in 13/14 (93%) patients, whereas commercial latex RAST was positive in only 9/15 (60%) patients. We report the case of a 76-year-old woman who experienced dizziness, vomiting, dyspnea, thoracic erythema, and vaginal itching within 5 minutes of eating cucumber. She had been diagnosed 3 months earlier with papaya urticaria and latex sensitization. The results of skin prick tests were positive for cucumber, watermelon, papaya, and latex and negative for melon and profilin extracts. Latex products are widely used both in our homes and in hospitals. Latex allergy is an increasingly worrying problem for health professionals, not least allergy to latex urinary catheters. The pathophysiology of latex allergy is discussed with reference to catheter allergy. Other known problems of latex catheters are also highlighted, including toxicity leading to urethritis and stricture formation, and encrustation. Nurses need to be aware of the increasing incidence of latex allergy and the importance of screening patients specifically for this risk factor.

In this case report, latex-induced asthma is described in a dental assistant with an associated history of contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, and rhinitis. She switched to vinyl gloves, which eliminated her cutaneous symptoms, but her respiratory symptoms continued. Skin-testing to latex was strongly positive. Methacholine challenge and peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) were abnormal during the workweek but normalized after a two-week vacation. Nebulized latex was implicated in the development of occupational asthma, and personal latex-avoidance measures did not prevent the condition.

As hypersensitivity to natural rubber latex (NRL) has become an increasingly recognized problem in children, identification of all groups at risk seems important. In this study hypersensitivity to NRL was evaluated in 337 children with potential risk factors. A review of the medical histories of 300 adult patients presenting for emergency dental care at a dental college revealed no individuals who identified themselves as allergic to latex.
