Gasoline sniffing.

Intentional use of gasoline as an intoxicant has been frequently reported in diverse clinical literature. Recent investigations have described a high prevalence of this behavior in certain ethnic groups such as American and Canadian Indians living in isolated areas. Encephalopathy due to tetraethyl lead has become a well-accepted complication of gasoline sniffing within the last decade, but other adverse effects are less well known. This report discusses gasoline sniffing as a specific substance abuse behavior, and reviews some of the known or potential medical complications. Treatment is prim

[Medico-legal diagnosis of occupational diseases: effects on rehabilitation].

Within the limits of the regulation currently in force, medicolegal diagnosis of occupational disease, as performed by INAIL (National Institute for Insurance against Occupational Diseases), play a by no means secondary rôle in prevention. If such diagnosis is made in the very early stages, disability can even be prevented and therefore the necessity of rehabilitation avoided.

Accidental Acetone Ingestion in Liver Transplant Patient With Alcohol Relapse: A Case Report.

Acetone is one of the three main types of ketone bodies that can be found in ketoacidosis, along with acetoacetate, and beta-hydroxybutyrate. Any of these three ketone bodies can be found in the blood after the natural breakdown of fatty acids in diabetes, starvation, or alcoholic ketoacidosis. However, a patient can also develop acetone poisoning from ingestion of common household products such as nail polish removers, paint removers, isopropyl alcohol, or other detergents and cleaners. Ingestion is usually accidental in adults and children and can lead to severe damage to the liver, heart, n

Cardiovascular toxicity associated with supplement use.

BACKGROUND: Supplement use is prevalent and appears to be increasing over time. In the United States, regulation by the Food and Drug Administration is limited largely to post-marketing surveillance, raising safety concerns. A variety of supplements have been associated with cardiovascular toxicity, which can occur via adulteration, substitution, or as a result of intrinsic toxicity of the supplement. Cardiovascular toxicity due to supplement use may arise via several different mechanisms, and has been reported with supplements that act as central nervous system stimulants, via poisoning of ca

Variant angina induced by carbon monoxide poisoning: A CARE compliant case report.

RATIONALE: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can cause severe damage to the nervous system, and can also cause serious damage to organs, such as the heart, kidneys, and lungs. CO damage to myocardial cells has been previously reported. This can lead to serious complications, such as myocardial infarction. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old female patient complained of sudden chest pain for 30 minutes. Before admission, the patient had non-radiating burning chest pain after inhalation of soot. DIAGNOSIS: An electrocardiogram showed that myocardial ischemia was progressively aggravated, manifested b

[Acute lead poisoning in cows due to feeding of lead contaminated ash residue].

In a dairy herd of 21 cows which were on pasture during the day at the end of May 2002, four eight years old cows were suddenly inappetent and showed severe diarrhoea consisting of black discolorate feces. A few days after the onset of the disease, three affected cows exhibited neurological disorders. These cows were admitted to the IInd Medical Clinic of the University for Veterinary Medicine in Vienna. Following clinical signs were observed: circulatory weakness, anorexia, atony of the rumen, diarrhoea and in accordance with acute lead poisoning typical signs of the central nervous system. O

Reversible Toxic-Metabolic Encephalopathy in Fluroacetamide Intoxication: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Fluoroacetamide, a commonly used convulsant rodenticide, can rapidly damage the nervous, digestive, and cardiovascular systems, potentially leading to fatal outcomes if ingested. This study reports the case of a 62-year-old Chinese woman who presented with symptoms of intoxication, including slurred speech, agitation, and seizure-like episodes, accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, skin bruising, and mild liver dysfunction. Toxin analysis revealed the presence of fluoroacetate in her blood and urine, and diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) imaging indicated white matter lesio

Lead Exposure in Different Organs of Mammals and Prevention by Curcumin-Nanocurcumin: a Review.

Chronic lead exposure is related to many health diseases in mammals. Exposure to lead forms reactive oxygen species reducing body antioxidant enzymes inflicting injury to numerous macromolecules or cell necrosis. Recent studies have revealed oxidative stress as the vital mechanism for lead toxicity. Lead is found to be toxic to several organ systems such as hematopoietic, skeletal, renal, cardiac, hepatic, and reproductive systems and extremely toxic to the central nervous system (CNS). Curcumin, an active ingredient of the dietary spice, and nanocurcumin, a nanoform of curcumin, are found to

[Poisoning with selected mushrooms with neurotropic and hallucinogenic effect].

Picking mushrooms, especially in summer and autumn, is still very popular in Poland. Despite raising awareness of poisonous mushrooms in the Polish society, year after year hospitals treat many patients diagnosed with poisoning with the most common toxic species of mushroom found in our country. Furthermore, growing interest in hallucinogenic mushrooms among young people has become a serious medical problem of our time. Websites make it incredibly easy for people to obtain information on the morphology and appearance of mushrooms with psychoactive properties, which leads inexperienced pickers

Hyperthermia in psychostimulant overdose.

Psychostimulant drugs such as amphetamines, amphetamine derivatives, and cocaine produce a variety of potentially lethal effects, and an understanding of these toxic effects is important for emergency physicians. While some effects of psychostimulant poisonings such as cardiovascular compromise and seizures have been discussed extensively, other metabolic derangements such as hyperthermia are less well characterized. In fact, hyperthermia is a common feature of severe-to-lethal poisonings and may be the primary mode of demise in some patients. Animal studies confirm that drug-induced hyperther

[Outbreak of lead poisoning associated with Ayurvedic medicine].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lead poisoning is normally caused by repeated occupational inhalation of lead. However, lead may also be absorbed through the digestive route. Some alternative medical treatments, such as Ayurvedic medicine, can also contain lead and may result in poisoning. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We collected cases of lead poisoning related to Ayurvedic treatments attended at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona. RESULTS: Two female patients, aged 45 and 57 years, respectively, who initiated Ayurvedic treatments which involved the ingestion of various medicaments, were included. The firs

[Deafness and mentality in Francisco Goya's paintings].

The famous painter Francisco Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) suffered during his life one or several diseases, the nature of which has not been determined with certainty. At age of 46, Goya suffered from severe illness that lasted a few months. It caused loss of vision and hearing, tinnitus, dizziness, a right-sides paralysis, weakness and general malaise. Although he recovered from a cerebral stroke which accompanied it, the deafness remained unaltered. The illness divides Goya's artistic life into two great different periods. After in the painter produces his greatest works. The visual experien

Oligodendrocyte dysfunction and regeneration failure: A novel hypothesis of delayed encephalopathy after carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning usually causes brain lesions and delayed encephalopathy, also known as delayed neurological sequelae (DNS). Demyelination of white matter (WM) is one of the most common sites of abnormalities in patients with DNS, but its mechanisms remain unclear. Oligodendrocytes (OLs) are myelinated cells that ensure the rapid conduction of neuronal axon signals and provide the nutritional factors necessary for maintaining nerve integrity in the central nervous system (CNS). OLs readily regenerate and replace damaged myelin membranes around axons in the adult mammalian CNS fol

Heavy metals exposure and hearing loss in US adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is common and, in young persons, can compromise social development and educational achievement. Exposure to heavy metals has been proposed as an important risk factor for hearing loss. METHODS: We evaluated the cross-sectional associations between blood lead, blood mercury, and urinary cadmium and arsenic levels and audiometrically determined hearing loss in participants aged 12 to 19 years in the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey after accounting for the complex survey design. There were 2535 individuals available for analysis of blood lead

Lead encephalopathy in neonatal Long-Evans rats: morphologic studies.

Lead encephalopathy was produced in neonatal Long-Evans rats by administering daily doses of lead acetate (600 milligrams of lead acetate/kilogram of body weight) through an esophageal catheter. Experimental rat pups showed behavioral changes, failed to gain weight at the same rate as controls, developed a paraplegia and died by 15 days of age. Lead analysis showed very high blood and tissue lead levels. Sequential histopathologic changes were studied in the cerebellum with observations also made in the choroid plexus, cerebral cortex and corpus striatum. Emphasis was placed on the cerebellum
