Legal Minors Who Inject: Differences in Socio-Demographics and Treatment Needs Compared to Adults in a Swedish National Sample of People with Injecting Drug Use.

BACKGROUND: Injection drug use among legal minors is under-researched. Although the population may be small in absolute terms, treatment needs may be greater than for those who began injecting as adults. Such knowledge may help tailor services more effectively. Previous research tends to use selective samples or focuses solely on medical indicators. The present study uses a larger sample drawn from national register data in Sweden over a 9-year period (2013-2021) to analyze differences in medical and social treatment needs between people who began injecting as legal minors and their older coun

"Like the Wild West": Health care provider perspectives on impacts of recreational cannabis legalization on patients and providers at a tertiary psychiatric hospital in Ontario, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Legalization has increased cannabis availability in Canada. Research shows complex relationships between cannabis use and mental health, and a need for health care providers to engage with patients about cannabis use. Providers have noted gaps in knowledge and research on the medical effects of cannabis as barriers to service delivery. It is unclear how providers and patients in mental health care settings have been impacted by legalization. METHODS: From June 1 to July 2, 2021, we conducted a qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with 20 health care providers i

'Legal high' associated Wallenberg syndrome.

'Legal highs' are substances of synthetic or natural origin having psychotropic properties. 'Legal highs' are often new and, in many cases, the actual chemical ingredients in a branded product can be changed without notifications and the risks are unpredictable. Acute recreational drug toxicity is a common reason for presentation to both hospital and prehospital medical services. It appears that, generally, the pattern of toxicity associated with 'legal highs' is broadly similar to that seen with classical stimulant recreational drugs such as cocaine, MDMA (3,4 methylenedioxy-N-methyl amphetam

Forging new paths in the development of community mental health interventions for people with mental illness at risk of criminal legal system contact.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) have disproportionately high rates of criminal legal system involvement. For many, this becomes a repeated cycle of arrest and incarceration. Treatments that address symptoms of mental illness are a critical component of the continuum of services for people with SMI in the legal system; yet on their own, psychiatric treatments have not been successful at reducing criminal legal system involvement for this population. Research suggests that criminogenic risk factors, the major drivers of criminal legal system involvement, are disproporti

Critical Analysis and Exploring Stigma, Legal Barriers, Healthcare Access, and Rights Advocacy Challenges of People Living With HIV in Tunisia.

Our study provides a critical analysis and synthesis of the existing literature, public health data, and policy documents related to HIV stigma, legal barriers, and health care access in Tunisia. It examines complex challenges faced by people living with HIV (PLWH) in Tunisia, focusing on those three areas of concern. We identify persistent stigma and discrimination as critical obstacles, compounded by restrictive legal frameworks and health care access challenges, including workforce shortages and insufficient training. We highlight promising policy and advocacy efforts for improving care and

Patient debt management and student academic progress.

A survey of the patient debt management policies of all U.S.-accredited dental and dental hygiene educational programs was taken to assess institutional patient debt management procedures and their relationship to student academic progress. The policies were evaluated to determine the level of compliance with existing standards and to analyze them in light of their legal implications relative to student rights. The results illustrated a vast breadth of policies for both dental and dental hygiene programs, ranging from no relationship between debt management and student progress, to an unspecif

Utilization of Kentucky Syringe Service Programs in a Justice-Involved Sample of People Who Inject Drugs.

Residents of Kentucky are at-risk for harms related to the opioid epidemic and involvement in the criminal legal system (CLS) further increases those risks. In 2015, Kentucky legalized syringe service programs (SSPS) to provide low-threshold access to harm reduction services including syringe exchange, naloxone distribution, and linkage to care. The Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations (Gelbert et al., 2000) was used to investigate factors associated with SSP utilization among people who inject drugs involved in the CLS in Kentucky. One traditional predisposing factor (high school educa

Exploring Legal Restrictions, Regulatory Reform, and Geographic Disparities in Abortion Access in Thailand.

Despite decades of advocacy among Thai governmental and nongovernmental actors to remove abortion from the country's 1957 Criminal Code, this medically necessary service remains significantly legally restricted. In 2005, in the most recent regulatory reform to date, the Thai Medical Council established regulatory measures to allow a degree of physician interpretation within the confines of the existing law. Drawing on findings from a review of institutional policies and legislative materials, key informant interviews, and informal discussions with health service providers, government represent

Medical Abortion in Australia: What Are the Clinical and Legal Risks? Is Medical Abortion Over-regulated?

This article examines the clinical and legal risks of early medical abortion. After providing an overview of the history of mifepristone in Australia, the evidence concerning the efficacy and safety of medical abortion is discussed. It is argued that the negligible medical risks associated with mifepristone do not justify the restrictive regulatory measures imposed on medical practitioners. The article then turns to the legal risks and considers whether medical practitioners are vulnerable to prosecution under existing State and Territory laws. It is argued that providing early medical abortio

Silent crises in the COVID-19 pandemic shadow: a six-year medico-legal review of non-lethal intimate partner violence in Morocco.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major global public health concern and one of the most prevalent forms of gender-based violence, with significant consequences. This study analyzes non-lethal IPV cases reported to a medico-legal unit of Casablanca between 2018 and 2023. Data from 4,784 female victims were reviewed, focusing on socio-demographics, violence types, perpetrator relationships, and judicial involvement across the pre-COVID, peak COVID-19, and post-COVID periods. Married women represented 59.2% of victims. Physical violence predominated (83.1%), while sexual violence was underrep

Advancing reproductive rights in Pakistan: Recommendations for enhancing access to abortion and post-abortion care.

The current narrative review was planned to develop evidence and rights-based recommendations for improving access, quality, and integration of safe abortion and post-abortion care services in Pakistan, guided by national evidence, global guidelines, and stakeholder consensus. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to assess trends, inequities, legal and religious frameworks, and health-system barriers related to abortion and post-abortion care in Pakistan. Draft recommendations were formulated based on findings from the 2023 Population Council-Guttmacher Institute national study and

Challenges in the abortion supply chain: a call to action for evaluation research.

Reducing the burden of unsafe abortion rests considerably on women's ability to access appropriate and timely treatment or services. A critical component of that care relies on a functional supply chain to ensure availability of abortion drugs and supplies within the health system. Disruptions in the supply of medical abortion drugs delay provision of abortion services and can increase the risks to a woman's health. We examine the ways in which supply chain management (SCM) affects women's ability to access safe and timely abortion to meet their reproductive health needs and highlight the gap

Understanding Changes in Child Welfare Service Needs in the United States: A Quarter-Century Perspective.

This study examined how caregivers and child welfare professionals reported service needs over 25 years, focusing on housing, legal, mental health, and substance use supports. Using three cohorts of the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (1999-2024; N = 6,102), we estimated longitudinal multilevel logistic regression models to assess trends in reported service needs and associations with child, caregiver, and child welfare professional characteristics. Reported housing and legal needs declined modestly, while reported mental health and substance use needs increased. Caregivers

Is Preventive Treatment for Individuals With Sexual Interest in Children Viable in a Discretionary Reporting Context?

This study explored the viability of preventive treatment services for individuals with sexual interest in children, in jurisdictions without mandatory reporting but where risk-related disclosures to authorities are permitted at therapists' discretion. Health professionals (N = 112) were surveyed regarding their comfort, confidence, knowledge of relevant legal provisions, and personal disclosure thresholds, in relation to a hypothetical scenario of a client confiding pedophilic interest to seek help. Findings were mixed regarding implications for prevention service viability. Despite the compl

Roles for non-physicians in fertility regulation: an international overview of legal obstacles and solutions.

For more than a decade the roles of non-physicians in fertility regulation have been expanding. The article discusses the relationship between law and the expansion of those roles. The laws and regulations which effect these roles fall into three basic categories: those controlling the medical and other health-related professions, those regulating drugs and devices, and those affecting specific fertility regulation services. These in turn may either inhibit or facilitate the expansion of roles for non-physicians. Where legal barriers arise, and no feasible legal solution is developed, expansio

Sexual and Reproductive Health Outcomes among Incarcerated Women in Canada: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Women are the fastest growing population in Canadian prisons. Incarceration can limit access to essential health services, increase health risks and disrupt treatment and supports. Despite legal requirements to provide care at professionally accepted standards, evidence suggests imprisonment undermines sexual and reproductive health. This scoping review asks, "What is known about the sexual and reproductive health of people incarcerated in prisons for women in Canada?" METHODS: We use the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for systematic scoping reviews. Databases searched includ

Current Status of the Management of Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer in Asia: First Report by the Asian BRCA Consortium.

BACKGROUND: BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations are associated with an increased lifetime risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC). Compared with the Western developed countries, genetic testing and risk assessment for HBOC in Asia are less available, thus prohibiting the appropriate surveillance, clinical strategies and cancer management. METHODS: The current status of HBOC management in 14 Asian countries, including genetic counselling/testing uptakes and clinical management options, was reviewed. We analysed how economic factors, healthcare and legal frameworks, and cultural issues affect th
