BACKGROUND/AIM: Soft contact lenses occupy significant place in ophthalmology, both in the correction of refraction anomalies and in the treatment of many eye diseases. The number of patients that wear soft contact lenses for the purpose of correcting ametropia is constantly increasing. Due to the increasing number of wearers, the percentage of complications that can lead to serious eye damage and serious vision loss is also increasing. To eliminate persistent refractive errors after cataract and phakic IOL surgery, photosensitive silicone IOLs have been developed. These IOL formulations enable precise laser adjustment of IOL power to correct spherical and toric errors post-operatively, after wound and IOL stabilization. Initial experience with these laser adjustable IOLs indicate excellent biocompatability and adjustability of more than five diopters.

The authors give an account on the incidence of two types of reactions in the early postoperative period (within two weeks) after implantation of retropupilar intraocular lenses. We prospectively studied for three years the optical correction by contact lenses of 83 aphakic infants (141 eyes) who generally also had systemic and other ocular anomalies: 85% of the patients tolerated the lens wear for the whole study period. Complications occurred in 46 eyes and led to cessation of lens wear in two cases. Ten patients abandoned the lenses for other reasons. We examined cellular deposits on 14 intraocular lenses (IOL) that were removed after implantation for a variety of clinical reasons. Five of the lenses were cultured to evaluate the growth potential of preexisting cells on the IOLs. The most common cells found were iris pigment epithelial cells. The thickest membranes were probably formed by iris stromal cells. Many different designs have been produced for aphakic power spectacle lenses. Two lenses are described which have a common design aim--to produce a lens of uncut diameter but reasonable cosmetic appearance and weight. These lenses both utilize a continuous aspheric surface on the front surface, which enables them to have a stabilized central power zone and a near plano peripheral flange, but without the disadvantages of the traditional lenticular construction.
