Extramedullary relapses of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children and young adults are rare and in most cases are usually related to the central nervous system or testes. We describe a case of a 25-year-old man with an acute lymphoblastic leukemia with multiple extramedullary relapses in the testes, gallbladder, breast, parotid gland and eye at various times (Fig. 5, Ref. 21).

Although non-specific skin lesions are quite common in patients with leukemia, the specific infiltration of the skin by blast cells, known as leukemia cutis, is rare. Its incidence ranges from 1 to 50% and depends on the specific type of leukemia. Leukemic vasculitis represents a rare form of leukemia cutis consisting of the involvement and destruction of vessel walls by leukemic cells, which in themselves cause the vascular injury. To date, only few cases of leukemic vasculitis have been described. Here, we report two cases of this rare skin condition, one of which mimicked cutaneous polyarte

Infiltration of the prostate is frequent in the course of leukaemia. It is usually asymptomatic or may present in the form of classical bladder neck obstruction. The diagnosis is generally established during investigation of benign prostatic hypertrophy by biopsy or during treatment by resection. Treatment of leukaemia by systemic chemotherapy is unable to sterilize the prostatic site and must therefore be combined with local radiotherapy.

Although it has been recognized previously that several markers are present in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), their clinical usefulness of these markers in the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma infiltrating to the CNS has not yet been established. In order to determine their diagnostic usefulness as markers of meningeal infiltration by lymphoma cells in patients with adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), we measured some soluble factors in the CSF of patients with ATL and non-ATL patients. Soluble CD4 (sCD4) was highly elevated in all patients with ATL and meningeal infiltration. The CSF level of the sol

We present a rare case of intussusception in a 41-year-old man with acute myeloid leukemia without an evidence of leukemic infiltration of the bowel. The patient presented to the emergency room with right lower quadrant pain. Initially he was diagnosed with typhlitis. CT scan was done and showed ileocolic intussusception without a definitive lead point identified. Patient underwent hemicolectomy and histopathological study of the specimen did not show any leukemic infiltrate. High suspicion of intussusception should be kept in mind with leukemic patients presenting with abdominal pain.

BACKGROUND: One of the greatest barriers found by physical therapy treating individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) is the adherence to treatment, associated with the lack of motivation to remain active. Therefore, there is a need to change the look given to physical therapy and for the individual, seeking the centralization of the therapy in their preferences. This study aims to present the EMPOWER-PD, a protocol based on individual preferences and its design for feasibility.
METHOD: A 12-week pilot for a randomized clinical trial will assess the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness o

We report a case of leukemia cutis with atypical skin manifestations, presented with generalized various sized dark brownish to erythematous patches with plaques on the whole body of a 42-year-old man. Skin lesions developed 6 months ago and had no signs of itching or tenderness. He complained of sustaining fevers with abdominal discomfort. Laboratory findings showed elevation of leukocyte count and peripheral blood smear revealed 86% of lymphocyte. Histologic examination showed diffuse infiltration of abnormal cells that appeared to be leukemic in nature.

A 72 year old man was diagnosed with chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) according to the FAB group classification. He presented with symptoms of anaemia, urinary frequency, hesitancy, and nocturia. He was later admitted with acute urinary retention and acute renal failure, which resolved with treatment. A transurethral resection of the prostate was performed. Histological examination showed fibromuscular hyperplasia with dense infiltration by myelomonocytes which stained positively with chloroacetate esterase; immunohistochemical staining was positive for lysozyme, CD43, CD45, and CD68. We describe the case of a 68-year-old woman who presented with asymptomatic skin nodules and symptoms of anaemia, and was found to have acute megakaryoblastic leukaemia with fibrosis, a condition now believed to correspond to the former diagnosis of acute myelofibrosis. There is only one previous report of skin lesions developing in this condition.

This case-based review examines the spectrum of leukemic ocular involvement, focusing on its prognostic implications. A rare case of relapsed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in a 63-year-old man is presented, featuring simultaneous orbital proptosis, adnexal involvement, choroidal and retinal infiltration, and hemorrhagic changes affecting both the anterior and posterior segments. This constellation of findings, affecting multiple ocular structures concurrently, highlights the eye's potential role as a sanctuary site for leukemic cells and underscores the diagnostic challenge of distinguishing di

INTRODUCTION: Neuroleukemia is a rare disorder of the peripheral nervous system due to leukemic cell infiltration.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 34-year-old patient with history of acute myelomonoblastic leukemia in remission that presented progressive paresis of the right median, bilateral facial, and left peroneal nerves. The electromyogram confirmed the diagnosis of multineuropathy. A PET-CT showed hypermetabolism of both sciatic, facial, and right median nerves. A bone marrow aspirate confirmed the leukemia relapse so a new round of chemotherapy was performed with improvement of t

PURPOSE: To describe a case of chronic myeloid leukemia with retinal leukemic infiltration identified by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 64-year-old man presented with bilateral painless blurred vision and three weeks of fatigue, unintentional weight loss, and complete hearing loss. Dilated fundus examination of both eyes showed peripheral intraretinal hemorrhages with white centers, vascular tortuosity, and peripheral nonperfusion. No macular lesions were identified by slit-lamp examination, fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence

We describe a patient with myelomonocytic leukemia who demonstrated striking leukemic infiltration in the scar of a recent Hickman catheter placement. This cutaneous involvement occurred initially without signs of systemic relapse. A comparative review of leukemic cell physiology provides several possible reasons for this extramedullary infiltration, including the greater functional maturity, deformability, adhesiveness, and ability to cluster of myelomonocytic and monocytic leukemia cells relative to other leukemias. A careful cutaneous examination, with particular attention to recent scars,

A 71-year-old woman with a history of acute lymphoblastic leukemia presented with unilateral optic disc edema. Laboratory evaluations for infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic etiologies were negative. Magnetic resonance imaging of the orbits with and without contrast demonstrated enhancement and thickening of the right optic nerve with mild stranding of the intraconal fat. She underwent three large-volume lumbar punctures, all of which were negative for malignancy. An optic nerve biopsy was ultimately performed, demonstrating malignant cells on immunohistochemical staining. This case illus

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma is rarely associated with orbital involvement.
METHODS: We present a case of sporadic Burkitt lymphoma with extramedullary subperiosteal leukemic infiltrates of the orbit and facial bones.
RESULTS: Follow-up examination after chemotherapy and disease remission reveals resolution of the subperiosteal infiltrates.
CONCLUSION: Despite an aggressive presentation, cure is common with appropriate, intensive treatment. To our knowledge, this report is the first to photographically depict the resolution of extramedullary orbital subperiosteal leukemic infi

The kidneys of 18 autopsy cases of myelomonocytic leukemia (MML) were examined for MML-specific features. Nine cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) served as controls. The kidneys of the cases of MML showed macroscopically detectable signs of hemorrhagic diathesis and secondary uric acid diathesis more often than those of CLL. In the MML group most of the kidneys weighed more than the normal average for the corresponding age group, but the average renal weights for the 2 groups were about the same. Renal weight and grade of leukemic infiltration, particularly in MML, revealed no signifi

BACKGROUND: Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia is a rare hematopoietic stem cell disease in children with features of both myelodysplasia and myeloproliferation. Extramedullary involvement has been reported and pulmonary involvement secondary to leukemic infiltration is an initial manifestation, which may result in acute respiratory failure.
OBSERVATION: We present 3 children with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia and suspected pulmonary leukemic cell infiltration who all also suffered from respiratory insufficiency. The differential diagnosis included asthma and infections.
CONCLUSIONS: In eac

Portal hypertension in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is rare. A 64-year-old woman with CLL for 5 years and increasing hepatosplenomegaly developed portal hypertension and bleeding gastric varices. There was no portal vein thrombus by abdominal echography and angiography. Following splenectomy and devascularization of the fornix, the gastric varices disappeared. The liver biopsy showed dense leukemic cell infiltration in portal triads, but no fibrosis. The portal hypertension in this case may be mainly due to increased portal flow from the enlarged spleen and leukemic cell infiltration in
