von Willebrand's disease diagnosed after menorrhagia worsened from levonorgestrel intrauterine system.

BACKGROUND: Adult females with menorrhagia may have unrecognized mild von Willebrand's disease. Most females with known von Willebrand's disease report menorrhagia. CASE: A 38-year-old healthy female desired contraception. She described heavy menses lasting 8 days since menarche. History included uncomplicated vaginal deliveries. Physical examination was normal. The levonorgestrel intrauterine system was placed. Her menorrhagia then worsened to 14 successive days each month. Evaluation revealed mild von Willebrand's disease. At 19 months of follow-up, she retained her levonorgestrel intrauter

Endometrial lymphomyeloid cells in abnormal uterine bleeding due to levonorgestrel (Norplant).

Endometrial lymphomyeloid cell subsets were evaluated in samples from normal women and from women with abnormal uterine bleeding due to subcutaneous levonorgestrel implants (Norplant) or an intrauterine device (IUD). The frequency of CD3(+), CD68(+), CD43(+) and endometrial granulated lymphoid cells was evaluated by immunohistochemical or phloxine-tartrazine staining of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples. In normal women, cyclic variation in lymphomyeloid subsets was seen. In women using Norplant for contraception, the frequency of CD3(+), CD68(+) and CD43(+) cells was dramatically decre

Contraceptive-induced impairment: a rodent model study of levonorgestrel and DMPA.

OBJECTIVE: Hormonal contraceptives are widely used to alter the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, inhibiting ovulation, and altering reproductive hormone levels. Understanding their effects on estrous cycle regulation and fecundity in animal models is essential for evaluating their contraceptive mechanisms and long-term reproductive impact. This study aims to investigate the effects of Levonorgestrel and Depot-Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA) on estrous cycle phases, hormonal disruptions, and fecundity in rodent models, providing insights into their contraceptive efficacy and potent

The use of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine devices in adolescents - own experience.

It is estimated that 19% of adolescents in Poland begin their sexual life when they are 15 years old and more than 50% of people aged 17-19 years have already had their first sexual contact. World Health Organization recommends teenagers to use the method of 'dual protection' (condom and other method of contraception, i.e. intrauterine devices). In this study, we sought to present our own experience in the field of the use of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine devices in adolescents and to compare it with the experience of other researchers worldwide. Low- dose levonorgestrel-releasing intr

The effect of a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device on female sexual function.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) on the sexual function of women. Participants who had abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) complaints with LNG-IUSs were included (study registration: Kanuni Sultan Suleyman Training and Research Hospital, 2018/10/34). The demographic data of all participants were recorded. The female sexual function index (FSFI) questionnaire was used to participants before the insertion of LNG-IUSs and 6 months after its insertion. FSFI scores were calculated at both timepoints and were compared. The total FSFI sco

TRPV4 is involved in levonorgestrel-induced reduction in oviduct ciliary beating.

Previous studies revealed the increasing risk of tubal pregnancy following failure of levonorgestrel (LNG)-induced emergency contraception, which was attributed to the reduced ciliary motility in response to LNG. However, understanding of the mechanism of LNG-induced reduction in the ciliary beat frequency (CBF) is limited. The transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) 4 channel is located widely in the female reproductive tract and generates an influx of Ca2+ following its activation under normal physiological conditions, which regulates the CBF. The present study aimed to explore whether

Continuation of copper and levonorgestrel intrauterine devices: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Studies conflict on whether the duration of use of the copper intrauterine device is longer than that of the levonorgestrel intrauterine device, and whether women who continue using intrauterine devices differ from those who discontinue. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess continuation rates and performance of levonorgestrel intrauterine devices compared with copper intrauterine devices over a 5-year period. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 1164 individuals who underwent intrauterine device placement at an urban academic medical center. The analysis focused o

Factors affecting the spontaneous expulsion of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of, and identify risk factors for, spontaneous expulsion of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS). METHODS: Pre-insertion characteristics for 481 women who received the LNG-IUS at a single institution in the Republic of Korea between 2003 and 2011 were analyzed retrospectively. The median duration of follow-up was 13.4 months. Kaplan-Meier plots were constructed to estimate the time to occurrence of spontaneous expulsion in multiple subgroups. RESULTS: The overall crude incidence of spontaneous LNG-IUS expulsion was 9.6%. The cumulati

Drospirenone- and levonorgestrel-containing oral contraceptives and the risk of gallbladder disease.

BACKGROUND: Studies have found an association between the use of estrogen-containing oral contraceptives (OCs) and the risk of gallbladder disease. This study evaluated this relation as well as the role of progestogen on the risk of gallbladder disease among users of drospirenone-containing OCs compared to users of levonorgestrel-containing OCs. DATABASE: The UK General Practice Research DATABASE. We conducted a nested case-control analysis among women aged 14 to 60 years during 2001 through 2008 who had ever received drospirenone- or levonorgestrel-containing OCs. Cases were women with a fir

Recent developments in the clinical use of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.

This overview focuses on recent developments in the clinical use of the levonorgestrel- releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) on established indications. Recent studies confirm that the LNG-IUS is safe and equally effective for all age groups of women. All available studies showed that intrauterine contraception is more effective when compared to non-intrauterine contraceptive methods to prevent repeat abortions. Furthermore, insertion in young nulliparous women is acceptable in the majority of women and associated with high continuation rates. The effectivity of LNG-IUS appears to be simila
