The clinical course, histology, and steroid secretion of a 59-year-old postmenopausal woman with a 4-yr history of virilizing well-differentiated Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the right ovary are reported. Hormone secretion was examined by measuring peripheral and ovarian venous gradients and pre-and postoperative levels of some delta 4 and delta 5 steroids, estrogens, gonadotropins and Sex Hormone Binding Globulin levels. The preoperative responsiveness to ACTH, dexamethasone and hCG is also reported. The results are consistent with a Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor producing mainly testosterone and

A case of Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor with endometrioid differentiations is reported. The tumor was associated with hirsutism and androgenic excess which normalized following surgical removal. On light-microscopic study, the tumor resembled a well-differentiated endometrioid tumor with luteinized stroma. With further study, the interstitial stromal cell were recognized as Leydig cells, containing scattered Reinke crystals. Tubules and solid cords reminiscent of sex cord elements were also recognized. The dilated glandular elements showed scant apical and luminal positivity with the PAS stain fol

We describe a patient with a testosterone-producing metastasis discovered during the follow-up of prostate cancer. The patient had a history of a Leydig cell tumor (LCT) in the right testicle for which he underwent radical orchiectomy at the age of 60 years. Within a year after orchiectomy, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He received a radical prostatectomy with pelvic lymph node dissection. Due to recurrent prostate cancer, he underwent salvage radiation to the prostatic fossa and pelvic lymph node stations with hormonal treatment for 3 years. After approximately 1.5 years of chemical

OBJECTIVE: Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) of the ovary may produce androgens and cause virilization. Although they are generally benign, these tumors are typically very small, making them hard to detect by imaging processes.
METHODS: We report a case of a multilocular LCT involving the ovarian stroma, fallopian tube, and extra-ovarian soft tissue. It was diagnosed by catheter blood sampling of ovarian and adrenal venous blood.
RESULTS: A 63-year-old female presented to the endocrinology department with progressive hirsutism and male pattern alopecia occurring within 1 year. Laboratory tests revea

Leydig cell tumors of the ovary account for less than 0.1% of all ovarian tumors (1). We present two cases in which patients had markedly elevated serum testosterone levels and frank hirsutism. Both cases revealed right ovarian Leydig cell tumors upon oophorectomy with post-surgical resolution of hypertestosteronemia. While rare and difficult to diagnose, androgen secreting tumors should be suspected in women with hyperandrogenism and hirsutism, especially in the postmenopausal population.

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of a Sertoli-Leydig cell ovarian tumor and discuss the endocrinologic findings.
METHODS: We describe the clinical manifestations in a female patient with an ovarian tumor and summarize the results of hormonal studies.
RESULTS: A 33-year-old woman with abrupt cessation of menses, progressive hirsutism, and weight gain because of a unilateral ovarian mass identified sonographically and an increased serum testosterone level underwent laparotomy, which disclosed a left ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor. Hysterectomy and bilateral adnexectomy were performed. Tissue ex

In reporting another case of Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (SLCT) treated by conservative management, the principal characteristics of these tumors are reviewed and a general review is made: SLCT (arrhenoblastomas) are rare endocrine tumors (1 p. cent of tumors of the ovary). They most frequently occur in young women, are unilateral in 98 p cent of cases, and are manifest after a long period by endocrine signs (75 p. cent of cases) whose most frequent combination is: amenorrhea-hirsutism-hoarse voice. They are classified in four histological types which have different prognoses. Their potential de

Clinical, morphological and endocrine characteristics of 2 patients with Leydig cell tumours (1 benign unilateral and 1 malignant bilateral) are reported. The morphological investigation revealed that the neoplastic cells had the same ultrastructural characteristics as normal Leydig cells. The only ultrastructural difference was the presence of 'membranous whorls' that have never been found in normal human Leydig cells. The patient with benign unilateral Leydig cell tumour appeared to produce no excess of steroid hormones, but rather a substance of FSH-inhibiting activity. The second patient,

A 20-month-old boy presented with precocious puberty due to a Leydig cell tumor, and at the age of 6 years with a primitive neuroectodermal brain-tumor (PNET). A novel splice site mutation of the TP53-gene, likely to be associated with a nonfunctional protein, was found in the proband, his father and younger sister, but only the proband has so far developed malignancy. The clinical phenotype in the boy is suggestive of Li-Fraumeni syndrome, but the family does not strictly conform to the canonical definition.

RATIONALE: Testicular tumors represent 1% to 1.5% of all tumors in men. Those derived from Leydig cells are rare and account for 1% of testicular tumors. Leydig tumor cells can produce steroid hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. The amount and type of hormones secreted by these tumors may produce complicated clinical characteristics in these patients.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we report a patient with azoospermia, a testicular Leydig cell tumor (LCT), and elevated plasma testosterone levels. We describe the diagnostic and therapeutic experience of this case, and our follow

49,XXXXY pentasomy or Fraccaro's syndrome is the most severe variant of Klinefelter's syndrome (KS) affecting about 1/85000 male births. The classical presentation is the triad: mental retardation, hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and radio ulnar synostosis. Indeed, the reproductive function of Fraccaro's syndrome is distinguished from KS. Besides, Leydig cell tumors are described in cases of KS, but never documented in the Klinefelter variants. We describe a young adult of 22 years old who presented with hyper gonadotropic hypogonadism, delayed puberty and bilateral micro-cryptorchidism. We report a case of Leydig cell tumor of the postpubertal cryptorchid testis with the chief complaint of male infertility. A 36-year-old man had consulted another clinic and his semen analysis revealed oligospermia. A solid mass was palpated in the right inguinal undescended testis. He was referred to our hospital for treatment of the testicular tumor. Right inguinal orchiectomy was performed and pathological diagnosis was Leydig cell tumor with no malignant findings. After the surgery improvement was seen in his semen analysis. There was no evidence of recurrence 9 months after surgery.

It is possible to hypothesize an alternative role for estrogens as a predisposing factor for testicular abnormalities: estrogen exposure during development in perinatal life may initiate cellular changes which would require estrogen and/or androgen later in life for promotion to hyperplasia or neoplasia. We reviewed the literature on Leydig cell tumors and the hormonal modifications they induce. In adult patients with Leydig cell tumors, although the serum estrogen (E2) and testosterone (T) varied, the T/E2 ratio was constantly low, and the chorionic gonadotropin administration produced an hig

A study has been realized in six patients with estrogen secreting Leydig cell tumors from 18 to 120 months after hemicastration. Testicular contralateral volume is normalized, gynecomastia can be completely reduced, sex steroids are normalized while gonadotropins can be temporary increased. Spermogram which is abnormal can be normalized. These results confirm the heterogeneity of these tumors.

The three effects of mEGF on MA-10 Leydig tumor cells that have been discussed here are summarized in TABLE 7. The earliest effect of mEGF on MA-10 cells can be detected within 5 min of addition of mEGF and it lasts for about 60 min. During this time mEGF transiently attenuates hCG-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. Although the magnitude of this effect is small, it can be correlated with a transient attenuation of the hCG-provoked increase in steroid synthesis. At longer times (i.e., 1-8 h) mEGF activates steroid synthesis by a "cAMP-independent pathway" and it potentiates (in a synergist
