Knowledge of medications for opioid use disorder and associated stigma among primary care professionals.

BACKGROUND: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are the gold standard. However, significant barriers limit their use in the primary care setting, including limited knowledge of the medications and stigmatizing attitudes. In this study, we assess knowledge levels among primary care-aligned professionals (PCPs) currently in practice, and whether knowledge of MOUD is associated with stigma and treatment attitudes. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Using rosters from the state of Ohio licensing boards, we surveyed 403 physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician associates in 2022, on the mechan

U.S. Tax Credits to Promote Practical Proactive Preventative Care for Parkinson's Disease.

Persons with Parkinson's disease (PD) and society at large can profit from a strategic investment into a forward leaning, practical, preventative, and proactive multidisciplinary care policy. The American healthcare system is not easily bent to accommodate this type of care, and thus a tax benefit is an attractive option. An individual federal income tax benefit of $6200 each year for every person residing in the US with a diagnosis of PD, could among other offerings provide monthly access to a licensed clinical social worker and access to mental health services. The implementation of more coo

Privileging Midwives for Abortion Care.

Since the US Supreme Court overturned Dobbs v Jackson, expanded access to abortion has been critical. Abortion is safe, and related complications are rare. The safety of abortion provision by advanced practice clinicians (APCs) is well documented. Despite the increase in targeted restrictions for patients and clinicians in many states post-Dobbs, in recent years there have been meaningful gains in recognition and codification of abortion as part of an expanded scope of practice for APCs. Thus, creating a formal written pathway for midwives to obtain privileges in abortion provision could also

Assessment of Head Shape by Craniofacial Teams: Structuring Practice Parameters to Optimize Efficiency.

INTRODUCTION: Since the initiation of the "Back to Sleep Campaign" by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1992, the incidence of referrals for positional plagiocephaly has increased by 600%. Although patients with positional plagiocephaly rarely require operative intervention, they often do require treatment with cranial molding helmets or positioning changes. The increased volume of patients makes the task of separating cases of craniosynostosis from positional head shape problems more difficult. The authors sought to determine how providers are handling this increased workload of head shap

Improving Provider Competency to Enhance Safety in Dermal Filler Procedures: A QSEN and Benner-Guided Program.

Aesthetic nursing has rapidly expanded without standardized training to ensure provider competency, increasing the potential for adverse events (AEs). While most dermal filler AEs are minor, serious complications including vascular compromise, can occur. This quality improvement project aimed to reduce dermal filler AEs by implementing an evidence-based competency assessment program for aesthetic providers using the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) framework and Benner's Novice to Expert model. Our objective was to improve patient safety by decreasing dermal filler AEs through st

Gestational diabetes mellitus and postpartum care practices of nurse-midwives.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum screening for glucose intolerance among women with recent histories of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is important for identifying women with continued glucose intolerance after birth, yet screening rates are suboptimal. In a thorough review of the literature, we found no studies of screening practices among certified nurse-midwives (CNMs). The objectives of our study were to estimate the prevalence of postpartum screening for abnormal glucose tolerance and related care by CNMs for women with recent histories of GDM and to identify strategies for improvement. Sequencing of medical therapy in heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction.

The management of heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction is a true success story of modern medicine. Evidence from randomised clinical trials provides the basis for an extensive catalogue of disease-modifying drug treatments that improve both symptoms and survival. These treatments have undergone rigorous scrutiny by licensing and guideline development bodies to make them eligible for clinical use. With an increasing number of drug therapies however, it has become a complex management challenge to ensure patients receive these treatments in a timely fashion and at recommended doses. Th
