Effects of temperature and nutrition stress on Anopheles stephensi, an Indian urban malaria vector.

BACKGROUND: Changing climate and complexity in ecological landscape can potentially expand the geographic distribution of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) to adapt and transmit various vector-borne diseases, including malaria. Anopheles stephensi is a potential urban malaria vector in the Indian subcontinent. Temperature and nutrients are the important environmental stressors, which influence the life cycle and vectorial competence of mosquitoes. METHODS: Three experimental setups were designed in the laboratory by exposing An. stephensi to low-temperature (LT) at 4 °C for eggs and 18 ± 1 °C f

A complex mechanism translating variation of a simple genetic architecture into alternative life histories.

Understanding the processes that link genotype to phenotype is a central challenge in biology. Despite progress in discovering genes associated with ecologically relevant traits, a poor understanding of the processes and functions via which molecules mediate evolutionary differences leaves us critically far from linking proximate and ultimate causes of evolution. This knowledge gap is particularly large in multifaceted phenotypes of ecological relevance such as life histories where multiple traits covary and influence fitness. In Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), variation in a key life-history t

The impacts of early environmental adversity on cognitive functioning, body mass, and life-history behavioral profiles.

Early adverse experiences or exposures have a profound impact on neurophysiological, cognitive, and somatic development. Evidence across disciplines uncovers adversity-induced alternations in cortical structures, cognitive functions, and related behavioral manifestations, as well as an energetic trade-off between the brain and body. Based on the life history (LH) framework, the present research aims to explore the adversity-adapted cognitive-behavioral mechanism and investigate the relation between cognitive functioning and somatic energy reserve (i.e., body mass index; BMI). A structural equa

Plant Trait-Based Life Strategies of Overlapping Species Differ Between Anthropogenically Disturbed and Conserved Forests.

Global forest ecosystems face escalating threats from intensive anthropogenic disturbances. Plants inhabiting forests with contrasting disturbance histories often evolve divergent life history strategies, as reflected in functional trait differences across heterogeneous environments. However, most previous studies have inadequately controlled for the confounding effect of species identity, as anthropogenic disturbances markedly alter community composition; such compositional turnover obscures the precise attribution of trait variation to environmental drivers. In this study, we comprehensively

Saint Paul, the Apostle, and the Gastaut-Geschwind syndrome.

The interface between epilepsy and religiosity has been a long-standing matter of debate. Epilepsy has affected several religious leaders throughout history. Hyperreligiosity may be observed in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy as a component of the so-called Gastaut-Geschwind syndrome which involves other behavioral and personality traits such as hyposexuality, viscosity, philosophical concerns, sense of personal destiny, hypergraphy, emotionality, and irritability. Saint Paul, the Apostle, probably had temporal lobe epilepsy. He was a genius man of intellectual excellence and refined cult

The evolution of virulence and host specialization in malaria parasites of primates.

Parasite virulence, i.e. the damage done to the host, may be a by-product of the parasite's effort to maximize its fitness. Accordingly, several life-history trade-offs may explain interspecific differences in virulence, but such constraints remain little tested in an evolutionary context. In this phylogenetic study of primate malarias, I investigated the relationship between virulence and other parasite life-history traits. I used peak parasitaemia as a proxy for virulence, because it reflected parasite reproductive success and parasite-induced mortality. Peak parasitaemia was higher in speci

Life-history divergence in Chinook salmon: historic contingency and parallel evolution.

By jointly considering patterns of genetic and life-history diversity in over 100 populations of Chinook salmon from California to British Columbia, we demonstrate the importance of two different mechanisms for life-history evolution. Mapping adult run timing (the life-history trait most commonly used to characterize salmon populations) onto a tree based on the genetic data shows that the same run-time phenotypes exist in many different genetic lineages. In a hierarchical gene diversity analysis, differences among major geographic and ecological provinces explained the majority (62%) of the ov

Under the weather?-The direct effects of climate warming on a threatened desert lizard are mediated by their activity phase and burrow system.

For ectotherms such as lizards, the importance of behavioural thermoregulation in avoiding thermal extremes is well-established and is increasingly acknowledged in modern studies of climate warming and its impacts. Less appreciated and understood are the buffering roles of retreat sites and activity phase, in part because of logistical challenges of studying below-ground activity. Burrowing and nocturnal activity are key behavioural adaptations that have enabled a diverse range of reptiles to survive extreme environmental temperatures within hot desert regions. Yet, the direct impact of recent

Depression, stress and regional cerebral blood flow.

Decreased cerebral blood flow (CBF) may be an important mechanism associated with depression. In this study we aimed to determine if the association of CBF and depression is dependent on current level of depression or the tendency to experience depression over time (trait depression), and if CBF is influenced by depression-related factors such as stressful life experiences and antidepressant medication use. CBF was measured in 254 participants from the Amish Connectome Project (age 18-76, 99 men and 154 women) using arterial spin labeling. All participants underwent assessment of symptoms of d

Evidence for Environment-Specific Pace-of-Life Syndromes.

The pace-of-life syndrome (POLS) hypothesis posits that consistent individual differences in behaviour are integrated with physiology and life-history traits such that behaviour mediates how individuals resolve life-history trade-offs. For instance, individuals exhibiting higher exploration tendencies may accelerate reproduction by gaining access to resources more quickly, but this same behaviour could reduce survival through increased risks of predation and competition. While empirical support for POLS remains mixed, recent theory emphasises the role of environmental context in resolving some

New insights into malaria vector bionomics in Lao PDR: a nationwide entomology survey.

BACKGROUND: In Laos, the malaria burden remains high despite a significant reduction of cases during the last decade. In the context of the disease elimination by 2030, a nationwide entomological survey was conducted to better understand the distribution, abundance and behaviour of major malaria vectors (Anopheles spp.) in the country. METHODS: Mosquito collections were implemented in ten villages from ten provinces during the rainy and dry seasons of 2014 and 2015 by using human landing catch (HLC) and cow bait collection (CBC) methods. After morphological identification in the field, molecu

Spatiotemporal variation in the adult sex ratio, male aggregation, and movement of two tropical cloud forest dung beetles.

While theory suggests that at conception the sex ratio should be balanced (1:1), this can be variable across space and time in wild populations. Currently, studies of the environmental factors that regulate adult sex ratio (ASR) in species with different life history traits are scarce. Using capture-recapture over a year, we analyzed the influence of habitat type (forest and nonforest) and season (rainy and dry) on variation in ASR, male aggregation and the trajectory movement of 2 dung beetle species with different life history traits: Deltochilum mexicanum (a hornless roller species) and Dic

The effect of childhood trauma and Five-Factor Model personality traits on exposure to adult life events in patients with psychotic disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Recent life events are associated with transition to and outcome in psychosis. Childhood trauma and personality characteristics play a role in proneness to adult life events. However, little is known about the relative contribution and interrelatedness of these characteristics in psychotic disorders. Therefore, we investigated whether Five-Factor Model (FFM) personality traits and childhood trauma (abuse and neglect) predict adult life events, and whether the effect of childhood trauma on life events is mediated by personality traits. METHOD: One hundred and sixty-three patients

Psychological characteristics and subjective symptoms as determinants of psychological distress in patients prior to breast cancer diagnosis.

GOALS OF WORK: The objective of this study was to determine how psychological characteristics, subjective symptoms, a family history of breast cancer, and age impact psychological distress in outpatients at the first hospital visit prior to breast cancer diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were prediagnosed women with complaints of breast symptoms who either came to our hospital directly, or with a referral from another clinic. Patients were asked to complete questionnaires to determine the following: trait anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), negative emotional suppression (Co

Functional traits reveal unaccounted diversity within Sonchus asper (L.) Hill (Asteraceae) in the northern Mediterranean and enable the reinstatement of ancient taxa.

Functional traits express the ecological and evolutionary attributes of individuals that compose taxa, providing robust criteria to detect speciation when integrated with phylogenies. We tested this approach in Sonchus asper (L.) Hill, a putatively self-fertilizing annual weed that has recently been reported to exhibit extensive floral and life-form variation across the northern Mediterranean. This variability was already documented in the nineteenth century, but it is incongruent with current subspecific classifications based on leaf arrangement. We sampled 40 populations encompassing this va

Body size and wing shape responses of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) to contrasting environmental conditions in cold-temperate Argentine Patagonia.

Insect adaptations to seasonal environmental variation reveal diverse responses, including changes in morphology and ecophysiology, which may influence life-history traits during immature and adult stages. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the relative body size and wing shape in adult Culex (Culex) brethesi Dyar mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) emerging from larvae reared under contrasting environmental conditions in Patagonia, Argentina (Aldea Escolar, Chubut Province). Two field experiments were conducted during winter 2021 (winter larvae experiment, WLE) and summer 2022 (su

Trait-based inference of fragmentation-driven extinction risk.

Habitat fragmentation is a leading cause of plant extinctions, yet predicting which species are most vulnerable remains a key challenge. We propose that population connectivity, and thus gene flow via pollination and seed dispersal, can be inferred from plant traits. We integrate these traits into a connectivity-trait dimension, which, together with breeding system, life-history traits, and landscape context, ranks species at risk of genetic erosion and local extinction, providing an early-warning triage tool. By linking traits to gene flow mechanisms, the framework helps prioritise investment

Longitudinal studies of personality disorders: four lessons from personality psychology.

The three longitudinal projects described in this special section of the Journal of Personality Disorders raise a number of intriguing questions concerning the natural history of personality disorders and offer more than their share of surprises. In addition, they underscore several valuable lessons derived from the literature on normal-range personality traits. Drawing in part from the writings of the American trait psychologist Gordon Allport, I describe four such lessons: (1) change and continuity of personality traits and disorders can and do coexist, (2) the covariation among personality

From 'magic traits' to diversification mechanisms.

Species richness is markedly uneven across the tree of life, and traits have long been invoked to explain this pattern. Expanding phylogenetic and trait datasets enable broader comparisons, but trait-diversity associations alone do not reveal how differences in richness arose. We argue that such associations should be reframed as process hypotheses about three non-exclusive processes: lineage origin, access to ecological or geographic opportunity, and persistence. Mixed trait-diversity associations are expected when the same trait influences multiple processes whose relative contributions vary

Fish species sensitivity classification for environmental impact assessment, conservation and restoration planning.

Species conservation, river rehabilitation, stock enhancement, environmental impact assessment and related planning tools require indicators to identify significant impacts but also mitigation success. Since river systems are shaped by disturbances from floods and droughts, typical riverine fish species should have evolved life history traits providing resilience against such disturbances. This study compiled and analyzed resilience traits of European lampreys and fish species to derive a novel sensitivity classification of species to mortality. We assembled life history traits like maximum le
