Truck-involved crashes injury severity analysis for different lighting conditions on rural and urban roadways.

This paper investigates factors affecting injury severity of crashes involving trucks for different lighting conditions on rural and urban roadways. It uses 2009-2013 Ohio crash data from the Highway Safety Information System. The explanatory factors include the occupant, vehicle, collision, roadway, temporal and environmental characteristics. Six separate mixed logit models were developed considering three lighting conditions (daylight, dark, and dark-lighted) on two area types (rural and urban). A series of log-likelihood ratio tests were conducted to validate that these six separate models

LED surgical lighting system with multiple free-form surfaces for highly sterile operating theater application.

Although the ventilation system is widely employed in the operating theater, a strictly sterile surgical environment still cannot be ensured because of laminar disturbance, which is mainly caused by the surgical lighting system. Abandoning traditional products, we propose an LED surgical lighting system, which can alleviate the laminar disturbance and provide an appropriate lighting condition for surgery. It contains a certain amount of LED lens units, which are embedded in the ceiling and arranged around the air supply smallpox. The LED lens unit integrated with an LED light source and a free

Meeting report: the role of environmental lighting and circadian disruption in cancer and other diseases.

Light, including artificial light, has a range of effects on human physiology and behavior and can therefore alter human physiology when inappropriately timed. One example of potential light-induced disruption is the effect of light on circadian organization, including the production of several hormone rhythms. Changes in light-dark exposure (e.g., by nonday occupation or transmeridian travel) shift the timing of the circadian system such that internal rhythms can become desynchronized from both the external environment and internally with each other, impairing our ability to sleep and wake at

Economic and environmental analysis of retrofitting a large office building with energy-efficient lighting systems.

An evaluation of the economic and environmental costs and benefits that would result if the Zorinsky Federal Building, located in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, converted its current lighting system to a more energy-efficient system (i.e., joined the EPA's Green Lights Program) was conducted. Lighting accounts for 20-25 percent of all electricity sold in the United States. Costs considered in the study included the cost of retrofitting the building's existing lighting system and the cost of disposal of the current lamps and ballast fixtures. Benefits included a reduction of electric utility costs and a

Effect of exogenous oestradiol and lighting regime on age at first egg in domestic pullets.

1. Groups of ISA Brown pullets were transferred from 8- to 16-h photoperiods at 34, 44 or 54 d. In each group, 12 birds were injected on alternate days over a 12-d period starting 6 d before the change in photoperiod with beta-oestradiol-3-benzoate (1 mg/kg body weight) or with arachis oil vehicle (controls). Short-day controls were similarly injected from 28 to 40 d. Long-day (16 h) controls were also included in the trial but were not injected. Age at first egg (AFE) was recorded and plasma luteinising hormone (LH) concentrations were measured around the time of oestradiol treatment. 2. Mean

Fluorescent lighting enhances chemically induced papilloma formation and increases susceptibility to tumor challenge in mice.

To study whether fluorescent lighting at work might increase carcinogenesis, hairless mice were exposed to a bank of six 36 W standard fluorescent lamps (neutral-white) every workday for 8 h at an illuminance level of 1,000 lx. For comparison, other mice were exposed to UVB radiation or to simulated solar radiation. In experiment A the animals were irradiated for 6 weeks prior to the application of 7,12-dimethyl-benzanthracene once and--following an interval of 2 days--for 10 weeks after DMBA application. The number of blue nevi and papillomas was enhanced by exposure to all spectra 10 weeks a

Lighting up FLASH and beyond: TLD response across four orders of magnitude in proton dose rate.

BACKGROUND: Thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) are widely used for proton therapy dosimetry and remote audits. Yet their response under pulsed delivery and the ultrahigh dose rates relevant to proton FLASH remains incompletely characterized. In proton beams, apparent dose-rate effects can be masked by changes in linear energy transfer (LET), so we designed measurements to separate true dose-rate dependence from LET-driven changes in TLD sensitivity. PURPOSE: To characterize TLD-100 (LiF:Mg,Ti) detector response to synchrotron-based proton beams across in-pulse dose rates spanning approximate

Lead halide perovskite light-emitting diodes: navigating challenges and opportunities for next-generation display and lighting.

Lead halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have emerged as highly promising candidates for next-generation displays and solid-state lighting, achieving record-high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) exceeding 30%. The perovskites possess outstanding optoelectronic properties, such as high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY), narrow full-width at half maximum (FWHM), and efficient radiative recombination, driven fundamentally by the unique Pb2+ orbital configuration that imparts direct bandgaps and intrinsic defect tolerance. However, commercializing PeLEDs in next-generation d

Graph attention spatio-temporal graph neural network based human-light interaction modeling for indoor lighting environments.

In indoor light environment design, the dynamic interaction between human behavior and lighting systems has an important impact on environmental perception results. However, existing methods are difficult to describe its spatial structure and temporal evolution characteristics at the same time. To this end, this paper constructs a human-light spatio-temporal relationship modeling method based on graph attention spatio-temporal graph neural network, which uniformly represents human body nodes and lamp nodes as spatio-temporal graph structures, and introduces heterogeneous graph attention and ad

Lighting Up DNA in the Near-Infrared: An Os(II)-pydppn Complex with Light-Switch Behavior.

The osmium(II) polypyridyl complex [Os(tpy)(pydppn)]2+ (tpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine; pydppn = 3-(pyrid-2'-yl)-4,5,9,16-tetraaza-dibenzo[a,c]naphthacene) was synthesized and characterized to evaluate the effect of an extended planar π-system on photophysical properties and DNA interactions. This complex represents the π-expanded analog of the previously studied [Os(tpy)(pydppz)]2+ system. Electrochemical studies revealed a reversible Os(II)/Os(III) oxidation at +0.99 V vs. SCE and five ligand-centered reductions, generally less negative than those of the smaller pydppz analog, consistent with

Lighting the way: Exploring diurnal physical performance differences in school-aged visually impaired children and adolescents.

Circadian rhythms play a pivotal role in governing various physiological processes, including physical performance. However, in individuals deprived of light perception, such as the blind, these circadian rhythms face disruption. This study aimed to explore the influence of disturbed circadian rhythms on short-term maximal physical performance in children and adolescents with visual impairment. Forty-five volunteers participated in this study, comprising 17 blind, 13 visually impaired, and 15 sighted participants. The participants underwent a series of tests assessing maximal isometric strengt

Determining the posture and location of pigs using an object detection model under different lighting conditions.

Computer vision techniques are becoming increasingly popular for monitoring pig behavior. For instance, object detection models allow us to detect the presence of pigs, their location, and their posture. The performance of object detection models can be affected by variations in lighting conditions (e.g., intensity, spectrum, and uniformity). Furthermore, lighting conditions can influence pigs' active and resting behavior. In the context of experiments testing different lighting conditions, a detection model was developed to detect the location and postures of group-housed growing-finishing pi

Zero-Dimensional Broadband Yellow Light Emitter (TMS)3Cu2I5 for Latent Fingerprint Detection and Solid-State Lighting.

We report a new hybrid organic-inorganic Cu(I) halide, (TMS)3Cu2I5 (TMS = trimethylsulfonium), which demonstrates high efficiency and stable yellow light emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) over 25%. The zero-dimensional crystal structure of the compound is comprised of isolated face-sharing photoactive [Cu2I5]3- tetrahedral dimers surrounded by TMS+ cations. This promotes strong quantum confinement and electron-phonon coupling, leading to a highly efficient emission from self-trapped excitons. The hybrid structure ensures prolonged stability and nonblue emission compared to

Trivalent rare-earth-codoped silicate phosphor materials (Ba1.3Ca0.7-x-ySiO4:xDy3+/yEu3+) for solid-state lighting.

Trivalent dysprosium/europium-codoped silicate phosphors (Ba1.3Ca0.7x-ySiO4:xDy3+/yEu3+) were prepared as a function of Eu3+concentration (x= 0.03 andy= 0.01-0.05). The phosphors showed the averaged crystallite size of ∼37.2 ± 1.3 nm and displayed nano-/micro-scale grains with some void defects. The energy bandgap is about 4.3 eV for co-doped samples and 3.2 eV for the silicate host. The photoluminescence spectra indicated that the presence of Eu3+ions enhanced the red light emission, and the emission peaks located at the versatile wavelengths of 482, 577, 592, 614, 652, and 703 nm. Then, the

Long-Term Narrowband Lighting Influences Activity but Not Intrinsically Photosensitive Retinal Ganglion Cell-Driven Pupil Responses.

Purpose: Light affects a variety of non-image forming processes, such as circadian rhythm entrainment and the pupillary light reflex, which are mediated by intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of long- and short-wavelength ambient lighting on activity patterns and pupil responses in rhesus monkeys. Methods: Infant rhesus monkeys were reared under either broadband "white" light (n = 14), long-wavelength "red" light (n = 20; 630 nm), or short-wavelength "blue" light (n = 21; 465 nm) on a 12-h light/dark cycle starting a

The Role of Percent Volume Buried in the Characterization of Copper(I) Complexes for Lighting Purposes.

The usefulness of percent volume buried (%Vbur) as a readily quantifiable property is investigated with regard to [Cu(NN)(PP)]+ complexes of interest for lighting purposes. Photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and single crystal X-ray structures of 100 reported compounds were assembled, %Vbur of the ligand systems were calculated and analyzed for correlations. We found that increased shielding of the central Cu(I) cation relying on shared contributions of both (NN) and (PP) ligand systems led to increased PLQYs. These findings are of relevance for future characterizations of Cu(I)-based co

[Thermal and Lighting Housing Environments and Circadian Blood Pressure Variability: Findings from the HEIJO-KYO Cohort].

The purpose of this short review is to describe the influence of housing environment temperature and lighting on circadian blood pressure (BP) variability using data from the HEIJO-KYO cohort, a community-based cohort study launched in 2010. Increased excess mortality from cardiovascular disease in winter is a worldwide problem. Previous studies showed higher conventional BP and higher daytime ambulatory BP in winter; however, the relationship between indoor cold exposure and circadian BP variability remained unknown. In our cohort, we found a significant inverse relationship between indoor te
