Oxytocin and vasopressin immunoreactivity within the forebrain and limbic-related areas in the mustached bat, Pteronotus parnellii.

The nonapeptides, oxytocin and arginine vasopressin, play an important role in mammalian social and reproductive behavior. Using immunocytochemical procedures, we identified oxytocin-immunoreactive neurons in the frontal and auditory cortices, limbic areas such as the medial septal nucleus, horizontal limb of the diagonal band and the amygdala. Only arginine vasopressin neurons were present in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. In limbic-related areas, the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei and the nucleus centralis contained both oxytocin and arginine vasopressin neurons

Cerebral blood flow, metabolic, receptor, and transporter changes in bipolar disorder: the role of PET and SPECT studies.

The basic concepts of positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scanning are introduced, and the two modalities are compared. Applications to bipolar disorder (BD) are reviewed. Regional cerebral metabolic rate and blood flow, often used as surrogate measures of neuronal synaptic activity, are increased in the frontal lobes in both unipolar and bipolar depression. In mania, metabolism increases in the dorsal cingulate cortex, striatal regions, and the nucleus accumbens, as well as in limbic structures of the temporal lobes, but decreases in dorso

A Case of Anti-Leucine-Rich Glioma-Inactivated Protein 1 (Anti-LGI1) Encephalitis With an Unusual Frontomesial Motor Cortex T2 MRI Hyperintensity.

Anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated protein 1 (anti-LGI1) encephalitis is a rare autoimmune disorder, classified within limbic encephalitides, and characterized by seizures and subacute cognitive-behavioral impairment, mainly affecting short-term memory and usually involving temporo-mesial lobe structures. We present a case of anti-LGI1 encephalitis characterized by focal right lower limb motor seizures and pyramidal signs and responsive to high-dose methylprednisolone. The patient developed an atypical left frontal lobe parasagittal T2 hyperintense lesion on MRI within one month of hospital

Increased anterior cingulate and temporal lobe activity during visuospatial working memory in children and adolescents with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Similar to adults, children and adolescents with schizophrenia present with significant working memory (WkM) deficits. However, unlike adults, findings of abnormal activity in the prefrontal cortex in early-onset schizophrenia (EOS) are not consistently reported. Since WkM continues to develop through adolescence and into early adulthood, patterns of activation in adolescents may be different than those found in adults. The goal of this study was to evaluate the functional neurobiology of WkM in patients with EOS. METHOD: Participants included 22 patients with EOS (mean age 15±2.8

Post-COVID-19 Leucine-Rich Glioma Inactivated 1 Autoimmune Limbic Encephalitis in an Aviator.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune limbic encephalitis is a rare condition. Autoimmune limbic encephalitis after COVID-19 infection is rarer. To date, a handful of cases in nonaviation settings have been reported and their serology were negative for antiprotein leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1 antibody (LGI-1), save two case reports. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in aviation environment where positive anti-LGI-1 antibody was detected in serum post-COVID-19 infection. CASE REPORT: 53-yr-old male commercial pilot presented with confabulations and faciobrachial dystonic seizures 6 mo

Carbamazepine and PIP-syndrome in temporal lobe epilepsy.

We describe four patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy who developed psychosis, intermittent polydipsia and hyponatremia (PIP-syndrome) while being treated with carbamazepine. These cases illustrate the close links between dysfunction of the limbic system causing epileptic seizures and psychosis on the one hand and dysregulation in hypothalamic centers manifestating in polydipsia and osmodysregulation on the other.

Dissociative states with abnormal temporal lobe EEG. Multiple personality and the illusion of possession.

Twelve patients with clinical and EEG manifestations reminiscent of temporal lobe epilepsy reported symptoms of dissociative states. In seven of these patients, the clinical picture was consistent with multiple personality, whereas the other five had the illusion of supernatural possession. These cases suggest that in selected instances dissociative states may constitute complex behavioral manifestations of chronic limbic epilepsy.

Decreased regional homogeneity in major depression as revealed by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Functional imaging studies indicate abnormal activities in cortico-limbic network in depression during either task or resting state. The present work was to explore the abnormal spontaneous activity shown with regional homogeneity (ReHo) in depression by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Using fMRI, the differences of regional brain activity were measured in resting state in depressed vs. healthy participants. Sixteen participants firstly diagnosed with major depressive disorder and 16 controls were scanned during resting state. A novel method ba

Aberrant Salient and Corticolimbic Connectivity in Hypersexual Parkinson's Disease.

Introduction: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) represent a side effect of dopaminergic medication in Parkinson's disease (PD). Patients experience an excessive desire toward natural rewards paired with uncontrolled actions. Yet, the precise neural and behavioral mechanisms associated with ICDs and, importantly, each specific subdomain remain unclear. We aim to decipher resting-state and corticolimbic functional connectivity in PD patients with and without hypersexual ICD. Materials and Methods: Seventeen PD patients with hypersexuality (PD+HS) and 15 PD patients without hypersexuality (PD-HS)

Invasion of small cell lung cancer into the limbic system from leptomeningeal metastases.

The diagnosis of leptomeningeal metastases is sometimes difficult when the cytology of cerebrospinal fluid is negative. We report a rare case of leptomeningeal metastases that required differentiation from paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis. A 67-year-old man with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer was admitted for a sudden decrease in the level of consciousness. He suffered memory disturbances that began the day before admission. Diffusion-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed bilateral symmetric areas of hyperintensity in

N-type calcium channel antibody-mediated paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis: a diagnostic challenge.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of encephalitis presents a diagnostic challenge and often remains a mystery. However, current technological advances using antibodies can enable a definitive diagnosis in cases that would previously have been suspected to be idiopathic or viral encephalitis. Our objective is to show that tonsil neuroendocrine carcinoma can present initially as limbic encephalitis mediated by N-type calcium channel antibodies and to highlight the diagnostic confusion before cancer detection. METHODS: We report a rare case of neuroendocrine cancer presenting as limbic encephalopathy, La

Limbic encephalitis with relapsing polychondritis: persistent white matter lesions and brain atrophy.

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare autoimmune disorder affecting cartilage. Limbic encephalitis is a rare central nervous system manifestation of RP. This current case report describes a 66-year-old Chinese male patient who complained of developing myoclonus in the left leg, ataxia and speech difficulties 3 weeks prior to hospital admission. The patient presented with cognitive impairment, sleep disorder and extrapyramidal symptoms. The patient was diagnosed with RP that affected auricular cartilage, which also manifested as limbic encephalitis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed bilateral

Neuroimaging features of whole-brain functional connectivity predict attack frequency of migraine.

Migraine is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by attacks of moderate or severe headache accompanying functionally and structurally maladaptive changes in brain. As the headache days/month is often measured by patient self-report and tends to be overestimated than actually experienced, the possibility of using neuroimaging data to predict migraine attack frequency is of great interest. To identify neuroimaging features that could objectively evaluate patients' headache days, a total of 179 migraineurs were recruited from two data center with one dataset used as the training/test coh

Frequency-specific network changes in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy: Analysis of chronic and transient dysfunctions in the temporo-amygdala-orbitofrontal network using magnetoencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is associated with disruptions in the temporo-amygdala-orbitofrontal (TAO) network, a key component of the limbic system. We aimed to investigate TAO network alterations in patients with MTLE using magnetoencephalography (MEG), which overcomes susceptibility artifacts that limit functional MRI analysis of the orbitofrontal cortex. METHODS: Nine seizure-free patients with MTLE post-temporal lobectomy and nine age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. Preoperative MEG data were collected and segmented into frequency bands ranging from

Uncommon epiloptogenic lesions affecting the temporal lobe.

There are several processes implicated as uncommon causes of temporal lobe epilepsy. Trauma is the leading cause of epilepsy in young adults, intracerebral blood collection being the most consistent risk factor of seizures, especially subdural hematomas and brain contusions. Infarction is the entity most commonly related to epilepsy in the elderly population. Seizures usually present as complex seizures with high recurrence between 6 months and 2 years after stroke. There are some radiological characteristics of the affectation associated with high risk of early and late seizures. Noninfectiou

[A case of herpes simplex encephalitis presenting complete destruction of the medial portions in the bilateral temporal lobes].

A 57-year old man, who had suffered from herpes simplex encephalitis and had been cured without antiviral agents, was admitted to our hospital three years after the encephalitis. He had a complete loss of memory for events subsequent to the encephalitis and a retrograde amnesia for the several years leading up the encephalitis. MRI revealed the abnormalities located in the limbic system, especially the medial portions in the bilateral temporal lobes of the cerebrum were completely destroyed. We consider that this case suggests the specific affinity of herpes simplex virus especially for the me

The neurobiology and clinical significance of depersonalization in mood and anxiety disorders: a critical reappraisal.

Depersonalization and derealization occur on a continuum of situations, from healthy individuals to a severely debilitating disorder where the symptoms can persist chronically. Since 1960s, different neurobiological models have been hypothesized and they have been associated with the temporal lobes. Recent advances in the functioning of the limbic system and the application of Geschwind's concept of disconnection in the cortico-limbic networks, pointed the role of the amygdala and its connections with medial prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex, the same structures that are strictly

Anti-Tr/DNER Antibody-associated Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndrome Presenting Limbic Encephalitis with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma.

An 82-year-old man presented with acute progressive disturbance of consciousness. We suspected autoimmune limbic encephalitis because of abnormal magnetic resonance imaging findings in the bilateral temporal lobes and cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis. The patient tested positive for anti-Tr/Delta/Notch-like epidermal growth factor-related receptor (DNER) antibodies, and a tissue biopsy revealed complications of anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Typically, anti-Tr/DNER antibody-associated paraneoplastic neurological syndrome presents with cerebellar ataxia and is complicated by Hodgkin lymphoma (H

Morphological patterns of the collateral sulcus in the human brain.

The collateral sulcal complex is an important landmark on the medial surface of the temporal lobe. Anteriorly, it delineates the limbic regions of the parahippocampal gyrus from the visual-processing areas of the fusiform gyrus. Posteriorly, it continues into the occipital lobe, bearing no relationship to the memory-related limbic regions. Given the considerable extent of the sulcus and functional heterogeneity of the surrounding cortex, an investigation of the morphology of this sulcus was carried out to examine whether it is continuous or a series of sulcal parts, i.e. independent sulci clas
