A 43-year-old black man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia treated with chemotherapy developed painful swelling of the 4th finger determined to be due to Listeria monocytogenes osteomyelitis. He recovered with 6 weeks' treatment with oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Osteoarticular infections due to Listeria monocytogenes are reviewed.

In Uruguay and other countries of southern South America, listeriosis in cattle has been described, often relying solely on histological lesions for diagnosis. This study aimed to: i) analyze a case-series of bovine listeriosis in Uruguay diagnosed through combined pathological and bacteriological methods and, ii) characterize the isolated Listeria strains. From 2014 to 2022, twelve cases were diagnosed. Eleven presented as neurolisteriosis, while one involved a third-trimester abortion. These events primarily occurred in spring (9 cases) and winter (3), affecting individual adult cattle (> 2

BACKGROUND: Listeria generate actin-rich tubular protrusions at the plasma membrane that propel the bacteria into neighboring cells. The precise molecular mechanisms governing the formation of these protrusions remain poorly defined.
METHODS: In this study, we demonstrate that the prolyl cis-trans isomerase (PPIase) cyclophilin A (CypA) is hijacked by Listeria at membrane protrusions used for cell-to-cell spreading.
RESULTS: Cyclophilin A localizes within the F-actin of these structures and is crucial for their proper formation, as cells depleted of CypA have extended actin-rich structures t

A live Listeria monocytogenes strain of reduced virulence, strain Aer, obtained by three successive mutations in regard to streptomycin and erythromycin, was used as vaccine on goats in two successive experiments. Animals were vaccinated either once or twice by subcutaneous route with doses varying from 6 x 10(8) to 1.5 x 10(10) CFU. No side effect was observed, except in one goat, vaccinated as pregnant, that aborted and from which the vaccinal strain was reisolated. The goats were challenged by subcutaneous route with 5 x 10(8) CFU L monocytogenes virulent strain ATCC 19115 at 95-100 days of

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen of significant concern to the agricultural and food processing industry because of its ability to grow and persist in cool and moist environments and its association with listeriosis, a disease with a very high mortality rate. Although there have been no listeriosis outbreaks attributed to fresh mushrooms in the United States, retail surveys and recalls are evidence that L. monocytogenes contamination of mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) can occur. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Listeria spp., including L. monocytogenes

Listeria strains were investigated as regard: the production of PI-PLC and lecytinase, haemolytic and CAMP activity survival in mouse tissues. Although all the examined L. monocytogenes strains produced PI-PLC, they showed a very different activity of this enzyme. It was surprising that one of the four L. innocua strains demonstrated a weak activity of PI-PLC. L. monocytogenes bacteria with strong PI-PLC activity survived in mouse spleens for a much longer period of time than L. monocytogenes microbes with only a weak production of this enzyme. However, L. innocua bacteria producing some PI-PL

Purified listeriolysin O (LLO) was evaluated as a specific antigen to detect both humoral and cell mediated immune responses of sheep infected with Listeria monocytogenes. Six sheep (two in each group) were orally inoculated with 10(10) organisms of L. monocytogenes, L. ivanovii, or L. innocua. Only the L. monocytogenes inoculated sheep had an elevated temperature (> 42 degrees C) and after 15 days had anti-LLO antibodies as assessed by an ELISA. In a blastogenesis assay, only peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from L. monocytogenes-infected sheep responded to LLO, while PBMC from all t

The incidence of Listeria monocytogenes in a vegetable processing plant was investigated over a 23-month period. Frozen ready-to-eat vegetable samples, well as the plant environment, were sampled. The molecular subtyping techniques, Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Restriction Endonuclease Analyses (REA), were performed to help investigate the origin and routes of Listeria dissemination. The low and sporadic incidence of L. monocytogenes made it impossible to establish an epidemiological sequence in the processing plant, though a case of cross-contamination between tomato and ratato

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive facultative intracellular bacteria which infects a wide range of hosts. In ruminants, infection with L. monocytogenes frequently causes encephalitis, which is usually fatal in sheep and goat, while cattle often recover with antibiotic therapy. Since the role of NO in the control of Listeria is controversial, we have studied the expression of iNOS in the brains of cattle, sheep and goats which had succumbed to listeria encephalitis. iNOS was demonstrated in decreasing intensity in the M phi of microabscesses from cattle, sheep and goat. iNOS expression

Listeriosis is a foodborne infection in humans caused by Listeria monocytogenes. Consumption of contaminated food can lead to severe infection in vulnerable patients, that can be fatal. Clinical manifestations include sepsis and meningitis, and in pregnancy-associated infection, miscarriage and stillbirth. Diagnosis is confirmed by culture and identification of the pathogen from blood, cerebrospinal fluid, vaginal swab, placenta or amniotic fluid. Treatment regimens recommend amoxicillin, ampicillin or an aminoglycoside. Virulence factors mediate bacterial adhesion and invasion of gut epitheli

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, facultative intracellular foodborne pathogen that enters the human digestive tract after the consumption of contaminated food. Much research has been done to understand the virulence factors of Listeria monocytogenes. One useful tool to study these virulence factors has been transposon mutagenesis. Many mutants can be generated at a time by performing high-throughput mutagenesis using transposons and later screening these mutants to identify features related to particular functions in the bacteria. Many transposon delivery systems are not ideal for tr

Whereas obligate human and animal bacterial pathogens may be able to depend upon the warmth and relative stability of their chosen replication niche, environmental bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes that harbor the ability to replicate both within animal cells and in the outside environment must maintain the capability to manage life under a variety of disparate conditions. Bacterial life in the outside environment requires adaptation to wide ranges of temperature, available nutrients, and physical stresses such as changes in pH and osmolarity as well as desiccation. Following ingestion b

Listeriosis is an uncommon but potentially serious infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes. The main route of transmission is through the consumption of contaminated food. It generally affects elderly people, pregnant women and immunosuppressed hosts, although cases are also seen in immunocompetent adults and children. Listeria monocytogenes is a short, anaerobic, non-spore-forming gram-positive bacillus that causes a narrow zone of hemolysis in blood agar. It is a facultative intracellular pathogen, and therefore it shows a complex pathogenesis. This bacterium has the ability to cross the

We report the case of a 56-year-old man showing numerous cardiovascular manifestations of Listeria infection (myo-pericarditis, coronary vasospasm, intracavitary vegetations/thrombus, sinoatrial blocks). Cardiac magnetic resonance and echocardiography images provided an unexpected picture of this infection, and were relevant for the appropriate clinical management. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography were useful for assessing the presence of an endocavitary mass. Tissue characterization by cardiac magnetic resonance confirmed the presence of a thrombus and revealed signs of acti

Endophthalmitis due to endogenous or exogenous bacteria is a rare infection of the eye. We report a case of endophthalmitis following Listeria monocytogenes keratoconjunctivitis in a 27-year-old healthy white male presenting with hand motion visual acuity, right eye mucopurulent conjunctivitis, elevated intraocular pressure, and pigmented hypopyon 6 months post-keratectomy. The conjunctivitis was unresponsive to a 5-day course of topical tobramycin eye drops, and the patient developed keratitis with pain that progressed to endophthalmitis after 21 days. Diagnostic B-scan revealed vitreous exud
