Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and cardiac arrhythmias.

Holter monitoring was performed in 400 patients undergoing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). The highest heart rate occurred before and after ESWL. During respiratory-triggered ESWL, 30% of the patients had one or more ventricular premature beats (VES), and 7% had couplets of VES. The number of ventricular and supraventricular premature contractions was significantly lower during ECG-triggered ESWL. Ventricular tachycardia occurred in seven patients during respiratory-triggered ESWL, and in one patient during nontriggered ESWL. All ventricular tachycardias were nonsustained, asympt

Cost-effectiveness of extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy.

A study was done comparing the charges and outcomes for extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) with those for percutaneous nephrostolithotomy (PCN), which was the treatment of choice at our hospital for stones of the upper urinary tract when ESWL was introduced. Using a retrospective cohort design, patients were matched for age, sex, physical status index (American Society of Anesthesiologists), stone size, and urinary tract obstruction. Twenty-nine pairs of PCN and ESWL patients with complete data were matched. The groups were not significantly different in the matching parameters. Seve

[Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy and lymph node calcification].

A female patient with calculi in the left kidney and calcified lymph nodes in the vicinity of the left renal pelvis was treated successfully with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. The simultaneous action of the shock waves on the calcified lymph nodes did not cause any alteration of the lymph node structure. Thus a shock-wave treatment can be carried out even in the presence of a calcified lymph node without complications.

Advances in biliary stone management: Latest-generation extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy vs laser lithotripsy for difficult bile duct stones.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and laser lithotripsy (LL) are established alternatives for the management of difficult common bile duct (CBD) stones. However, there is limited evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of the latest-generation Dornier Delta III lithotripter. In particular, evidence on the clinical performance of the Dornier Delta III lithotripter is scarce. AIM: To evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of ESWL performed with the Dornier Delta III and of LL using a single-operator cholangioscope with specific focus on stone clearance rates, num

Comparison between extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and semirigid ureterorenoscope with holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy for treating large proximal ureteral stones.

PURPOSE: Management of large impacted upper ureteral calculi remains challenging for urologists. These calculi are frequently associated with obstructive uropathy and deteriorated renal function. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is the least invasive treatment but its success rate is decreased for large impacted upper ureteral calculi. According to the American Urological Association guidelines on ureteral stones published in 1997, the appropriateness of ureteroscopy decreases when stone size exceeds 1 cm. However, the application of advanced ureteroscopy and techniques has increase

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy of pancreatic duct stones using the Healthtronics LithoTron lithotriptor and the Dornier HM3 lithotripsy machine.

PURPOSE: Pancreatic duct stones, which are most often a result of alcohol induced chronic pancreatitis, can lead to chronic abdominal pain, pseudocysts, and exocrine and endocrine failure of the pancreas. Others have reported success using extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) (Dornier Medical Systems, Inc., Marietta, Georgia) for pancreatic stones. We report our experience with pancreatic ESWL using the LithoTron (Healthtronics, Marietta, Georgia) and HM3 (Dornier) lithotripsy machines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed pancreatic ESWL in 23 patients in 4 years, including in 12 with

A comparative study of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and cholangioscopy-guided lithotripsy in the management of complex biliary stones: A randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Large and impacted common bile duct stones (CBDSs) cannot be removed by conventional endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) or cholangioscopy-guided lithotripsy is recommended as a second-line treatment. The aim of this study is to compare safety and efficacy of ESWL for difficult CBDS. METHODS: Patients at our hospital diagnosed with complex large CBDS between January 2021 and June 2022 were randomly assigned to the ESWL group or the cholangioscopy group for lithotripsy. Our results include clinical and technical su

Functional Assessment of Intravascular Lithotripsy for Stent Underexpansion.

BACKGROUND: Stent underexpansion from severe calcification leads to adverse outcomes. While intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) is effective pre-stenting, its role in treating stent underexpansion remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, retrospective study of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with IVL from January 2019 to 2025. Patients were categorized into two groups based on IVL use: the upfront group (IVL before stent placement) and the intrastent group (IVL for treating stent underexpansion). The outcomes included a quantitative flow ratio-based trans
